Spacer would understand how disconnected one can become from the ability to make friends and relate to people, when constantly on the move, changing from one place to the next. Jack's done her share of that.

Point taken.

Out of curiousity, how do you think a romance with a Earthborn/Ruthless Shepard would turn out?

All my male Shepard's are Earthborn/War Hero. I'm not sure how Jack would respond to a ruthless Shepard, but an Earthborn Shepard could be somewhat of a model for Jack. He grew up very underprivileged (of course not nearly as bad as Jack), and yet he overcame all of that and became a war hero (if you went with that background) and the saviour of the galaxy, twice.

Well, Garrus was the first in line. Heh.

Shepard would be the most extreme assh*le anyone has ever met, if he'd gone with the Earthborn/Ruthless background. If I chose that set, my Shepard would be brutally honest, to the point of being hurtful. Regardless if it was appropriate, or not.

He'd have the same attitude as Jack, that's for damn sure. But when it comes to caring...

He sent 3/4ths of his team to their deaths to wipe out an enitre batarian militia.

I really don't see a Shepard with that background caring about anybody. Not saying it isn't possible, but that's a complete renegade set, right there -- you even get bonus renegade points for choosing both of them.

There was never a question of Jack ever doubting or giving up on herself. Her issue is with everyone else. She wanted her existence to matter in any way she can make it happen. By hook or crook.

I've said in the past that one of the traits that draws me to the character, is her ability to persevere.  Life meets no one half way.  Just like the old saying:  "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger".  Her ability to endure her trauma doesn't delineate realism, but it is still inspiring nonetheless.

MaleSheps with the Earthborn background come second, regardless of what their psychological profile is. Because they'd know what Jack had to go through to survive, post Teltin. Don't think that background would mix as good with the Sole Survivor one as it would if Shepard were a colonist, though.

Spacers would probably have respect that she survived, but that's where the liking ends.

You know what would be great? If somehow Cerberus was responsible for Mindoir lol that would just be icing for me.

Anyway, it's all speculation, we get very little dialogue concerning our backgrounds with squaddies, and it's not like "Hey, I had a rough life, you had a rough life, we're perfect for each other!", from a roleplaying perspective, I can only say that each background gives Shepard a different tool to use to relate to his squaddies, and having a completely different perspective from them can be just as healthy and constructive as having the same. I just try to give Shepard as rough of an upbringing as I can, because either way, Shepard is a guddamn hero in the end.

Edit: And on a unrelated note, I have a love for women with butch names. I have a FemShep named Logan, so that speaks VOLUMES.

Heh, all my Shepards are named Kommander, so I guess it qualifies :P

Her actions speak for themselves. She doesn't give up, but I don't know if on quiet nights alone she doesn't fight with herself inside her head. Early on, she might have even contemplated suicide, but it wasn't long after such thoughts that she decided "**** that noise". Still, when your life has that much chaos, you can't stop the questions. "Why me?", "This is like a ****ing losing battle", "Is this worth it?". I imagine Jack wondering these things, but always knowing "Can't change the past, no use letting it destroy you when you're here, now."

I'm not stone-set on the idea either, just a gut-instinct. If you don't doubt yourself at first, then all you have is blind confidence, and that could get you killed.

Surely someone must disagree with me :P

If Cerberus were responsible for Mindoir, Cerberus' chance of convincing Shepard to work with them would have been slim to none. Jacob and Wilson would have been shot dead. Miranda would have been shot dead. That facility would have been exposed....

Shepard would have gone on a f*cking killing spree.Image IPB

Shepard: Wait, allow me. *PEW* shoots Wilson down.

Miranda: Dead?

Shepard: Yes please *PEW* shoots Miranda.

Jacob: *PEW* Shepard flinches.

Shepard: I'M THE GD SHEPARD! *punches Jacob exploding his head*

Shepard: Illusive Man, why the **** would a pro-human organization raid Mindoir?

Heh, you're not the only one then? I did that with my main Earthborn/Sole Survivor Shepard; in a nutshell, I gave him two adoptive sisters and killed them off in the most brutal way I could think. Among other things. Part of me wonders if I should tone down his backstory, but then, it's all in my head and never mentioned in game. So what would I care? Image IPB

That's every Sole Survivor's reaction I think. But combined with Mindoir? I don't think there'd be a galaxy left for the Reapers to destroy. Image IPB

Inspiring is a good word for it. I agree that her determination and perseverance in light of everything she's gone through is on of, if not the defining trait of Jack's character. Combined with the mystery of her past, it's what makes her so fascinating.

Also, the drought of fanfics is disappointing, but you can't rush these things I suppose. I still haven't given up on Urdaniel's even though it's coming up on 2 months since last update...  :(

Time to stick my head up again, I suppose.  Thanks to everyone who's been patiently waiting for me to get out of moping about my real life blues and get my butt back into the fanfic biz.

Good news: Almost finished with Day 5 and it looks to be around twice as long as any of the previous installments in isolation, to the point where it might end up as Day 5A and 5B.

Bad news: It's not yet finished, and even when I do it's going to go through my customary cooldown-reread-reedit-release cycle.  Not going to promise with hard or even ballpark estimates re: timescale as I've burned myself before with those.

If anyone here hasn't read the previous Days 1-4 and is interested in doing so, here's the link to Fanfiction.net:

Things Worth Keeping

Not going to claim brilliance or any such, but some folks have liked it, which is more than enough for me (and frankly, more than I expected, going in).

Please note that when I do release Day 5, it will take the place of the placeholder Day 5 post I made to inform folks of the delay in releases, so don't think that when you see the number of chapters as 5 that nothing has been updated.  The update date will tell the real story.

And just to add something to the thread that doesn't solely involve shameless self-promotion (though it does connect with the backstory in the fanfic itself), my main MeerShep Gabriel (whose name I selected before I knew that there was going to be a character named Gabby in Engineering, much to my chagrin) is a Colonist/Ruthless backgrounder.  I could go on at some length about this, but Day 2 of the fic is where a lot of the exposition occurs about how it (Ruthless) shaped his character and probably holds together better than my usual rambling posts.  His Colonist side is going to get some play in Days 5 & 6.  Here's hoping it don't land with a clang.

Finally, there's been some good-looking fics posted here recently.  I've barely done more than skim the first paragraph or so of each of them; trying to avoid being too influenced and all that.  But I'm going to go back and give them all a proper read when I'm done with the entire Jack/Shep weeklong interlude.

You had me worried there for a little while Urdaniel I thought Things Worth Keeping was done for. Glad to see your story will continue. No offense to any other Jackolyte writers but I like Urdaniels fic the most, you capture Jacks true character keeping a balance between her rugged and soft personality.

I just read through all four chapters.

That. ****. Is. Epic.

The guy above me said it the best; I could very much see Jack in that way. I like what I've seen, and I'm gonna wait patiently for the next one.Image IPB

Who knows, but I think Jack would love having a beautiful American Pit Bull Terrier.  Not sure what she would name it.

I'd  say she would secretly love cute things in general. Though if it had to be one or the other, I'd say she's more of a cat person. Don't know why exactly,  just a feeling.

I can imagine Jack having a pet snake, maybe.  That would be pretty cool, and the temps down there under engineering would probably be perfect for one.

Shep:  I'm going to the Citadel.  You need me to get you anything?
Jack:  Yeah, get me a dozen space hamsters.

Yeah, a snake would be a neat Jack-pet ^_^

I can imagine her having an interesting relationship with Urz... constantly throwing things at him when he chews her boots, belting him with an I-beam when he pisses on her favorite outfit. I mean, varren are just the biggest, toughest, meanest dogs in the galaxy - no more, no less :D
