As far as discussion in this thread goes, I think it's pretty well balanced.  I agree with Mondo, in that these fictional characters are taken too seriously.  Obviously, they aren't real.  We don't need to adhere to some strict policy of not being able to discuss other characters in the game.  Or not being able to post negative, or even derogatory comments towards any particular character, as far as that goes.  I had a similar experience to what Mondo experienced in the Miranda thread, except mine was in a different character thread.  The last thing we need here, is some form of censorship, or stifling of posts that run contrary to certain unspoken guidelines, or to cater to members that are oversensitive, or dislike our posts, in order to please them.  One of the reasons that I like the members that post in the Jack thread, is that we don't try to stifle anyone, or direct the discussion
only in specific ways.   As far as I'm concerned, nothing is off limits in this thread, as long as we don’t abandon the Jack character of course.  I have said this before… I don't look at this thread as a character support thread.  It's a character discussion thread, with Jack as the central focus.  I post in here because I like to exchange with the posters in here, as well as liking the Jack character.  I’m not a character support cheerleader.

And speaking of cheerleaders:  At least two of the characters in the game make remarks about Miranda being dressed like a wh*re, that I know of.  That suit gives her that look.  Let’s be honest, it makes her look a bit cheap.  Plus she has a decent figure and large breasts.  A lot of guys go for
that look.  Quite a few women are working their curves, as well as getting breast enhancements nowadays because of it.   The catsuit is a bonus to boot.  You put her in a nightclub in that outfit,
and a lot of guys are going to go after her before they go after a girl that is dressed more conservative.

Perhaps some girl gamers don't like Miranda, because they don't like the type of women that she represents in reality.  They see her as rival competition to themselves.  [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/grin.png[/smilie] Don’t misread me here though.  I’m not saying that I think that this is the case with anyone here in the Jack thread in particular.

As far as fan service goes:  The game is fan service.  I'm not a game developer, but I would assume that if you develop a game, the goal is for it to be as successful as possible.  That's a pretty safe assumption.  In order to reach that goal, you have to give the buyers/players what you think that they want in the game,  because if you don't, it's not going to be successful.  It's like that
with any product that is sold.  I think fan service is a good thing for game developers, because without it, it's a failure.

I don't really care either way concerning Jack's belt bra.  I do know one thing though. We wear clothes and cover certain areas of our bodies in society.  We don't go to work or go grocery shopping without any clothes on.  Women publicly cover their breasts with clothing.  Men usually do as well.  It's a fact of life.  Covering nipples is not some foreign abstract concept.

How do you think Jack would react to meeting someone that reminded her of her childhood?

Badly.

Anyways, my personal opinion is that I don't care about character bashing, praise, or criticism. They are as johnny said, fictional characters, I don't care if Joe Schmo doesn't share my views on a character. The developers themselves said that the characters in ME2 weren't made to be liked by everyone.

The only thing I take offense to is people insulting or antagonizing the fans themselves (personal attacks). Then people are taking things too seriously.

Sundown, great job with Son of Mindoir. Very interesting and well written as usual. That bit where she recalled how Shepard had treated her was surprising, to say the least. It really drove the point home how each of us have a different impression/version of Jack, Shepard, and their relationship.

It's always odd to read a Shepard who's displays a lot of emotion, since (as we all know) he's such a block in the game.

Yea, no kidding. Half of the time he's as stoic as a robot. I actually think that ME1 did a better job at making Shepard seem human, though it still didn't get it quite down.

Speaking of, I just finished my first ever playthrough of ME1. They did do a better job making Shepard seem real. I can't wait to start a ME2 with my non-default Shepard - I hadn't realized what a ****** they made him until I saw the alternatives.

F* you, Udina.

Edit: Forgot the important part! I managed not to romance anybody (still talked to them of course), to see if there's any difference in ME3 assuming they don't crush our spirits and dump Jack. Ashley was pretty cool though, if I ever do ME1 again I'll go through hers.

I don't think she would take it very well.

Here is a little bit of anger from Shepard.  Video that I recorded at the tail end of the Aresh scene at Pragia.  I converted it to wmv, so it's only 15mb.

I saw that one, Johnny. When Shepard tells Jack to follow orders, he does seem genuinely pissed. Meer improved for ME2, however the lines themselves aren't always great.

So, Tali gets her own t-shirt, on the Bioware store. If you had to design a single item of Jack-related merchandise, what would it be?

I posted 2 or 3 times in the maleShep support thread one day.  I stated that I thought Shepard needed to show more emotion, and I asked if anyone else thought that.  The two members that responded,  disagreed with me.

One of them had a pretty good angle though, I thought.  His/her reason was that if you make Shepard display too much emotion, it detracts from the immersion.  In that it adds content that should be experienced and RP'd by the player, not Shepard.  Shepard has to be a little flat, because if he's not, he's not your Shepard.  Shepard has to be generic.  He would be displaying characteristics or traits that you don't want in all of your Shepards.

I agree with that to a certain extent, but I also think a bit more emotion is in order.

Ultimately though, he's never going to the player's total and entire conception. He's always going to join the alliance, he's always to take it upon himself to stop Saren, he's always going to work alongside Cerberus, etc. I think it's a bit strange, for a game self-professed as cinematic and a bit like a movie, that Shepard does not display emotion  alot of the times.

As to the angle you are referring, it's important to note that this is not completely just about Shepard in general. There are several lines where Meer is flat but Hale is believable.

That scene where Jack is looking at her pistol.

Or this scene (this isn't exact frame I want, but it's pretty close)

I'm not sure what kind of merchandise, but it would be neat if this pic was on it.:D

Maybe that's intentional.  Why it would be, I don't know.  If it's not, then that's sloppy voice direction, I would think.

What about a shirt printed with the pattern of some of Jack's tattoos?

There are also lines where Meer is spot on and Hale is overly emotional.  I have a feeling that they wanted Manshep to have the dialogue the way that Meer said it.  Meer has done other voice work and conveyed emotion.... but seriously.... you expect a battle hardened soldier to phased by the crap that Shepard faces?

Always did like seeing Jack in silhouette. Like my t-shirts simple, too. Adding all of Jack's tatoos would get muddled quick.
