In case anyone cares, four more posts and we tie the Thane thread, making us second among new squadmates.

The tattoo I'm curious about, though, is the one of the diamond on her sternum. You know, the four-pointed one with skeletal fingers around it? What could a diamond over her heart possibly mean?

*pulling up my textures rips*

If you're talking about the one right below her neck on her upper chest, it looks almost like a compass to me.  Skeletal hands around a compass makes me think something like, "In every direction is death," or maybe, "No matter which way I go, I bring death with me," but I'm probably just talking out my backside. :))

On a sidenote, my boredom has led me to rip the game audio from ME2 and go through it to see what I can find (mostly to find lines that can be edited together to sound dirty, but enough about my hobbies ) Just found the audio for Jack's final romance scene and heard what she says if you reject her. One of the most heartbreaking things ever, and I know now I'll never be cruel enough to do that to her in-game.

Just because you mentioned it, I loaded a quicksave of a character in the midst of the Jack romance and did the rejection option (as I can't find it on yourtube) just to see what you were talking about... Jeez...

Throughout playing BioWare games, I've: Made Zaalbar kill Mission Vao, corrupted a young, pretty and innocent martial arts student into evil, committed genocide and impregnated a neutral evil liberal arts student with a demon seed that could destroy all of Ferelden.

And dumping Jack when she's in my cabin made me feel the worst out of any of that.  Bobby's lucky, as it was just an audio file for him.  He didn't have to watch her cry when she said it.

Don't do it.  Don't even look it up on youtube or rip and audio file.  It will ruin your week.

I wont.
I made the mistake of seeing the paper mache tali after being warned. Killed my lunch. It is not going to happen to me now. From now on, I will listen:innocent:

Could never bring myself to sell out humanity by letting anyone get near Morrigan's uterus... I did it myself and stopped playing because it made me feel like a traitor to my species, and no orgasm is worth that.

As for blowing Jack out... I did it kinda by accident with my Shep that romanced Tali... I was obviously a bit too nice to her on the way to the Relay. So, I blew her out... and was made to feel like a complete tool. So much so I went back about four missions and replayed through to avoid encouraging her at all. To paraphrase a line from The Simpsons "You can freeze-frame it at the exact moment her heart breaks into a million pieces."

Blowing Tali out would have hurt her, but she would have got over it... you do something like that to Jack and you're causing permenant damage, and she's had enough of that already. Only ever walk that road if you're a completely heartless ****. And I'm using the 'C' word there, just to underline how ****y an action it is to take. Commiting genocide or warping someone's morality to a point where they become a monster... you're not likely to do those things outside of a game. Breaking someone's heart, you can do that in reality. And if you've done it before, either by accident or design, that scene will kick you in the guts because it's so real.

There but for the grace of gaming... there's my warning :(

ME sure has gotten me into the habit of hitting the quick save key alot nowadays.  I still haven't romanced Miranda...I suppose I have to see what it's like to reject her at the last minute...but for the sake of knowing I have to see that scene of rejecting Jack, I haven't done that yet either. :|

I'm not sure what I did differently with my first Male-Shep, but Miranda never seemed interested in him... like, at all. Ever since that first run-through though, she's always pawing at my Sheps like they're made of bacon or something. Ugh. The plus side is that I've blown her out twice now; once for a girl who wears a bucket on her head and once for low-class criminal trash. Guess you were right Miri... perfection sucks

Miranda has the most low-key ditching scene... it's more of an "Oh..." & disappointed face kind of affair in comparison to Tali's sagging shoulders and Jack being more crushed than a leaky submarine at 4km down...

Thank you so much for telling me. I was going to look it up or do it myself just to see what she says, but now I'm not. My heart is slowly ripping just at the thought of it. Seeing it would totally ruin my day. Goddamnit now I'm curious though. Maybe I should wait till the weekend to check it out Posted Image.

Did a page count of the current fan-threads for squadmates, ME1 and ME2.

Tali: 2476
Miranda: 670
Kaidan: 511
Ashley: 267
Liara: 180
Garrus: 136
Jack: 56
Thane: 56
Legion: 29
Zaeed: 21
Samara: 20
Mordin: 11
Jacob: 8
Grunt: 5
Morinth: 5
Wrex: 4

So, yeah, maybe we can get above Thane, but that's pretty much as far as we're gonna get. Posted Image

As has been said before, though, we shouldn't try to focus too much on that. The last thing I want is for this thread to be clogged up with "I've got nothing to say, but I'm going to post anyway because we're SO close to beating those other guys" posts. That said, I'm going to try to come up with as much substance as I can to post.  Posted Image

Damn we're doing pretty good. I'm not ashamed at all that we're being beaten by the people in front of us. They're all ME1 characters, except for Miranda, and they've had a much longer time to attract fans. And generally the first characters are more popular than the new ones in anything. Plus the Tali thread is 99% garbage, so that thread is incredibly misleading. Pretty much every fan thread above us is full of garbage. Except the Liara thread. They do have some fanfics but I checked it out for a while and they actually had some substantial posts about Liara, it was nice, kudos to them.

But like you said, we don't need to bring ourselves down to their level. We don't need twitter-like posts and we don't need to make a desperate attempt at increasing the size of the thread. I think if all the fan threads had a contest of who has the most posts with over 300 words, we would destroy everyone.

BobbyTheI wrote...

You know, I've waffled back and forth on this, because it wasn't outright stated, but the way the tattoos follow some of her scars, I would assume that at least some of them were actually done at the facility.  Which makes her habit of getting tattoos afterward take on a deeper meaning: it's her attempt to cover up what had happened to her by surrounding the marks they had given her (tattoos and scars) with some of her own.  Sort of like reclaiming ownership of her own body, in a way.

That's a good way of putting it; "Reclaiming ownership of her own body." Her body was pretty much a tool for the scientists at the Teltin facility. And the fact that she would want to get a bunch of tattoos to hide her scars make sense. She wants to eliminate any traces of that place, which is why she wants to nuke the **** out of it.

Anoleis wrote...

About the diamond tattoo...maybe that is what she thinks her heart is worth. Or maybe, it's symbolism for the diamond in the rough...

Well if we're referring to the tattoo with the 4 skeleton hands coming out. I would be surprised if it's supposed to mean that death comes from her body She does have DEATH tattood on her fingers, and a giant omega symbol on her back which means 'the end.' It seems a lot of her tattoos share a common theme of "I will kill you," lol.

Azint wrote...

Do you think she should let her grow out?

I think Jack's good the way she is, it's an attribute of hers.

Jack looks prefect the way she is. The shaved head is part of what makes her unique. But I wouldn't be mad if she did grow some hair, as long as it was short and still made her look badass. There were some concept art pictures of her with hair, and they all sucked except for the seventh one which looked pretty good.

Here it is

Ah, bringing back memories of Annah, my first sharp-tongued roguish love.  Thinking back, I think that might have been the first in-game "romance" I ever played.  So even back then, I was saying "To hell with the unrealistically hot girl, I want the bad girl."  Of course, it didn't hurt that the unrealistically hot girl killed you if you kissed her. :P

Yeah, Fall-From-Grace was basicaly a paragon version of Morinth in that way.

Personally, I ended up romancing Annah eventually, but I was torn for a while between her and staying faithful (loosely speaking) to Deionarra. If there's any real equivalent to Jack in that game, I would have to say it's Deionarra - particularly in terms of the way she was used and betrayed.

Hmm... I have to say, curiosity always was one of my weaknesses, and I don't think I'll be able to get through the day without at least checking out this "last-second Jack rejection" scene.

Any advice from those who've already seen it - just how terrible is it? I won't end up crying myself to sleep, will I?

Well it`s not nice. But what I actually like about this scene is that Jack immediately starts to talk smack back at Shepard. Jack is far too strong to be completely destroyed by this. So in a way I would say I`m actually happy to have seen it.

I dunno... Jack is all front when it comes to emotions; other than the ones that lead her to cracking someone in the jaw, they're all fractured, vulnerable things. When you think how hard it was for her to come up to see Shepard in the first place (imagine her pacing up and down in engineering, getting in the elevator, getting out again, actually being afraid of something for once), to show a little bit of herself, and then for him to just turn around and say "I can't be bothered to try anymore," after all the pushing and probing and pulling her soft bits out of her armor... sure, she rails on him, but remember who she is and what she's been through. Riding back down in that elevator, knowing that the little monster in your head that says you're worthless, only able to stratch by on what people toss you as charity or payment for your abilities, is gloating in there and whispering I told you so in your ears... that is some serious **** to deal with. Rejecting her at that point is just hammering another nail in her emotional coffin.

It all depends on how you read it... I just saw it as the pinacle of douchebaggery myself. Probably helps if you have personal experience of being **** on from a great height in a relationship *shrugs*

Yeah, but she starts crying before she says it. It's just the front going back up. That was the biggest leap towards connecting with another human being she's ever had in her life. After that, she'll never have another again.

For all you Jack fans:

I have her in Baldurs Gate 2 as a sorceress, and she is far more badass: she has timestop, dragon's breath, spell strike and imrpoved alacrity and 4 spells per day from that level.

Its the height of douchebaggery, no question. I would never even have thought about trying it if it wasn't the topic de jure. I am just impressed that she has the strenght to immediately pull up that front again even though she is crying. I didn't want to say that stuff like this wouldn't have some serious impact on her and might ruin all her chances of ever opening up to people again.
It's just that in this rejection Shepard is just a tremendous **** and is somewhat toying with her the whole time, a person with less strenght might just completely break down.
I just find it impressive that she still has that front, that front that in parts allowed her to survive in the Terminus Systems for 9 years.
Maybe I'm just a big Jackoptimist but she has trusted people before and they have betrayed her before. I just like the idea that maybe an **** Shepard isn't really such a special person, that he can be the one to finally keep her from trusting ever again.

I'm not really good at putting my thoughts to words. I just hope you somehow see where I'm coming from with this.

I think I see what you're saying, Procki... that for all Shep's great sucesses, handling a relationship well need not be one of them. Fighting AI dreadnauts, no biggie. Letting a girl down easy, impossible. It doesn't involve shooting things for starters...

Bah... I must admit that I don't like tattooless and scarless Jack.

Those are integrating parts of that character. Obviously she got a tick personality, but without tatoos and scars, she would become a more insipid character. Not as much as Samara or Jacob, but still, a bit more.

I would find more funny to get her in ME3 with some hair on her skull!

Alright well now that you put it that way maybe I won't check it out... There is an epic battle going on in my head between guilt and curiosity.

Quick question. Do squadmates remain loyal after you turn them down during their romance scene? I imagine they do stay loyal, but in Jack's case the rejection seems so much more crushing than with the other squadmates, that I wouldn't be surprised if she makes a run for it next time you land somewhere lol.

For those really curious but not wanting to hear it, I hardened my heart and listened to it again to give you a transcript:

Shepard:  I'm sorry, Jack.  Fixing you isn't my job.

Jack: ...the hell, Shepard?  Why do this to me?  You're just like... like everyone!

Jack: Maybe I'm just too much for you to handle.  (I assume that's the order these two clips go in; like I said, it's just the raw audio. so everything's jumbled.)

And yeah, as somebody said, she goes right back to insulting you... but the tone of her voice just has so much hurt in it, that even when she tries to go back to caustic, she can't manage it.  You can just hear how much you've damaged her by doing this, just in two lines.

Okay, I'm deleting these sound clips now, and they don't exist.  There are no d-bag Shepards in my universe, no sir.

EDIT: Oh, and for those number watchers: we did pass Thane last night.  So if you go by posts in character threads, Jack is the seventh most popular squadmate, and the second most popular new ME2 squadmate.  And incidentally, the fan group is now the 18th most viewed.  Although I consider us the 15th, considering there are two Thane groups and three Tali groups ahead of us. :)

I mean, what kind of a ****ing ****** would say that? "Fixing you isn't my job." That's just... that's right up there with "I only ever dated you because I felt sorry for you," and my all time classic "There's just no good way to say it, but I only ever started seeing you because I wanted to **** your father."

A loooong time ago I worked in a nightclub bar, and I actually heard both those lines come out of women (on seperate occasions) with destroyed-looking men standing at their elbows. I told the doorstaff to check the poor bastards hadn't hung themselves in the men's rooms at the end of the night... I'm no brawler, but never before have I wanted to plank someone around the face with something that comes in a thick, heavy bottle... Jim Beam would have been ideal. It was a rock club, so generally the crowd had zero drama, but damn, did I feel like kicking off on those occasions.

Some people just don't deserve other humans in their lives... good ole Commander Shepard can be one of them too it seems.

I'm so glad you posted this, now I don't have to go try it. And reading it made me much less sad than if I had to hear it; not sure I would be able to take that well.

I haven't been posting much in this thread but I've been reading it, so great job to all of you who've been regular contributors - I've never seen such insightful and entertaining posts on a forum before, let alone a forum about a game.

Damn. I have a save right before the final mission where I chose Jack as a LI, and I decided to load it up to see it for myself before reading your post. The tone is just what destroys you. The way she says "Why do this to me?" Wow... I feel like the king of ****s. She doesn't say the first line in a tough way, like when you end your romance with her when she asks if you've ever felt alone when you're not. That moment is a lot more bearable. But during the romance scene she just sounds crushed. And she has the most heart wrenching sad face I've ever seen. And then she desperately tries to scrounge up some sense of toughness by saying "Maybe I'm just too much for you to handle." It's a good thing I just was able to load it from an old save, because if I had gone through a full playthrough and then gotten to that point, I would have felt a lot worse.

I seriously had a tough time even choosing that option. I sat there for like a full 2 minutes with the breakup dialogue option highlighted. And when the option is available the camera is perfectly positioned to make the moment look even more emotional, and Jack is just standing there all teary eye'd and looking down. BioWare pretty much set it up so that if you reject her you will feel like the most soulless bastard on the planet.
