We've probably already discussed this in the thread. But I thought it curious that Liara doesn't seem to like tattoos.

I don't think it's that she doesn't like them. She was attaching a negative stigma to Jack, for being covered in tattoos, I think.  Just like members on the forum here will often do.

Yea I thought if not Liara simply disliking them, it would be something like this. I still don't like it though.

I'm willing to forgive it, I suppose, because she was very emotional at the time.  The SB was trying to kill her.  Her former lover that she risked her life to save, is now in a romantic relationship with someone else.  This whole situation, revolves around the scenario of her and Feron finding Shepard's corpse, the one who she was in love with.  From her perspective, not Shepards, it can be interpreted as a betrayel, I think.

Edit:  I still don't see it as betrayel from Shepard's point of view.  The way this all plays out in the game, it shouldn't be seen as a betrayel from her point of view either.  For one thing, you can't talk to her about it on Illium.  In reality, you would have discussed this with her.  So, the rules of reality don't apply here.  Not to mention that you were dead for two years.  That damn sure ain't real!

Don't know if Liara really believes it as she appears to want to say anything to hurt Shepard at that point by singling out his cheating ways. People say a lot of things they don't mean when they're hurt and angry. There might a bit of truth hidden in the subconscious, but their rational mind tries to reject it. Anyway, she seems focused on Jack's anger in her initial comment and her conversation with Shepard later on. I agree with JD that mentioning the tattoos is just attaching another negative stigma to it.

Playing through Jack's recruitment mission again, Bioware definitely wrote all of the NPCs' lines, making sure that they don't use any gender-specific pronouns. They really wanted to make her in-game reveal a surprise.

That they did. And it worked :wizard:

The only surprise for me on the reveal was that they called her Jack. Which is fine, I don't think I could have handled having to call her SuZe. But the biggest surprise was how much I went from a poor initial impression based on the trailers to instant like based simply on Jack's first lines to Shepard. That's right, Jack. I hate Cerberus, too.

bumping for Jack love :)

making a dudeshep to import just to tackle the challenge of romancing her.....

Does Edmund sound like a good enough name for dudeshep? Course Jack would probably just call him Eddie *shudders*

I should totally get back to my Jack romance playthrough, but I'm somewhat reluctant at this stage. I have the unique perspective of someone who has never romanced Jack and likes her well enough without it. Once I romance her, suddenly my opinion gets all clouded simply because she's my love interest. That's how many discussions of whether or not you like a character go when romance is an option.

Edmund Shepard? A name like that, I could see why he'd prefer to go by Shepard all the time.

Okay, the last time I commented on a name, I was saying the name "Emily" sounded like someone was named after their grandmother without realizing I was sitting next to someone named Emily. So I shouldn't comment on names at all. Ever. Except for this one time when I subtly mocked the name Edmund.

Conrad Shepard. He used to use his first name all the time, but a chance encounter at the Ward markets one day made him think a name change was a good call.

Malcolm Shepard. Call him Mal. Latin for bad. Renames his ship Serenity.

Alan Shepard. His name is meta.

I honestly can't picture Jack calling him anything but Shepard. I've had a few people I knew who would only call me by my last name or I'd call them by their last name. It just fit better that way.

If someone has a Gillian Shepard, that might work. Y'know... Jack and Jill. But funnier.

I have a "Jillian" Shepard.

How in the hell did I not catch this one?

I also remember that pre-release vid where you see a wall signed by all the major voice actors - and of course Courtenay Taylor has "Jack" written next to her name.

Hm. Is Gillian supposed to be a unisex name? In my experiences, I've only heard it as a girl's name.

I'll post it here for reference - Jack's poem:

My soul
Burns
With a fire of darkness
Quenched only in pain
Of loneliness
I hold my breath waiting
Until spots appear black as the past
And fill my lungs with lies of hope
I mark myself
Black and jagged
To cover the scars
That make me a monster
A warning
This is not a place of honor
No esteemed dead are buried here

Not a fan of the poem, really. Strikes me as something out of secondary...

I think you're expecting a little too much, Ade. I doubt she has much in the way of formal training... besides, it's how anyone starts, with kinda embarassing, faltering steps towards expression. I doubt anyone's born able to paint like Rembrandt or compose like Mozart; it requires practice and nurturing, and I don't think either would have been given in any great degree in Jack's development.

Sure, it's not fantastic, but at least it's an attempt at expression beyond creative ways to end people's lives.

Nah, I "get" why the poem is the way it is. It's perfectly befitting of the character and its backstory. I wasn't expecting Yeats or some such, but bad poetry remains bad poetry...

-edit. Jack meeting a literary critic, face to face. An interesting possibility!
