One thing I've noticed is that a lot of Jack fans think a Sole Survivor Shep goes well with Jack's romance arc. Why is that?
I will say that my main Jack-romancing Shepard is Earthborn/Sole Survivor, even though my main main Shepard is Spacer/War Hero, in large part because Jack seemed to fit so well with him. Leroy grew up on the streets. He didn't know his parents, and he had to run with gangs just to survive. He might have fallen into a life of crime if he didn't make the decision to walk into that Alliance recruitment office. Likewise, he's learned what it's like to have the universe kick you right back down just as you're getting your feet, losing his footing again and again, on Akuze, and again when the Council shunted him off to the side and let him die, forcing him to become a pawn of Cerberus, the very people who destroyed his squadron on Akuze.
But because he's able to rise above all that and soldier on to be the hero of the galaxy (He's a Paragade, emphasis on the Para), he's in a unique position to understand what Jack is going through (not that his past has been as rough as Jacks, but it has been pretty rough) and know that sometimes, just as the Alliance helped him up, all you need is someone to help you up. And he's attracted to the gentle spirit under her tough survivor's outlook, and it goes from there, and I like it.
That said, I'm not gonna knock anyone who tries a different tack. I've enjoyed Mondo's Spacer Shepard and I think she does quite well with him. Plus, Hannah and Jack are sort of hilarious together.
