I guess I'll just thank the Japanese for giving us the word "tsundere" to so accurately describe elements of  Jack.

This. Pretty much this.

A person who is "tsundere" is a person who is hostile, cold and distant to someone, while secretly harboring feelings for them, either for friendship, or a relationship.  The "tsundere"  person may eventually warm up to the desired person, but he/she will remain playfully hostile in order to keep the person on his/her toes, and in a state of bewilderment.

Heh, that's pretty weird that they have a singular term to encompass all of that. So Jack is to Shepard what Calvin is to Susie Derkins.

Yes, Calvin is tsundere for Susie.  Susie is also tsundere for Calvin, but less-so.

When I think tsundere, I think Helga in Hey Arnold! She's such a jerk to Arnold, yet harbors feelings for him.

Helga is very tsundere for Arnold.  She's the perfect example of tsundere.

"You're weird Shepard. That kinda gets me off." That is not what a Tsundere would ever dare say :).

Dere-dere, then, if not true tsundere.  Anyway, she'll crack Shepard one across the jaw the next time he asks for some sugar.  ^_^

In addition, there's an interesting discussion in the "Isabela" thread, with some people throwing hissyfits over the prospect of a female character viewing sex as recreation, rather than something that must be romantic.  I bring this up because it's slightly relevant to Jack.

Last time I looked, it was the 21st C, and women have been emancipated for quite some time.    Of course, it's not about sex, per se, it's about power - specifically how much power a woman actually has snugged away in in her unmentionables.   I assure you, it's considerable, more than most men will ever admit.  The human race will accomplish little if we continually keep that 56% of humanity trapped by men's 'ideal' of what 'she should be'.  Bollocks! What utter rubbish!

*Cough*  Sorry, this topic tends to make me angry.  Your pardon.

Men like to control access to a woman's body, it's biological.  But then, we've taken over our own biology, haven't we;)

In Jack's case, her body is a literal weapon, and I can easily see a woman as intelligent as she is using it to it's fullest advantage.

More power to the Jack's of the world, I say.  More power to Isabela, too, whoever the hell she is.

Thoroughly rumbling my weeaboo-ishness, to expand there's two types: tsundere is (I believe this is the correct word) a portmanteau of the japanese 'tsun tsun' (cranky) and 'Dere dere' (doting/kind/sweet) that literally means 'Crankysweet'

There's 2 types, Type A and Type B

Type A is 'tsun' (lit. cranky) all the time but occasionally 'dere' (lit caring/sweet), and then there is the type B that is 'dere' but easily upset and becoming 'tsun'.
To be more succienct: One's a b***h that's occasionally sweet (Hello Jack!) and one's very nice that can be occasionally\\easily provoked into a b***h. (Tali in your group when you help that quarian on Citadel?)

It's important to note that this doesn't have to be a general disposition-it's perfectly possible someone is tsundere to a single person.

There is also the kudere (I think Miranda's one of these to some extent)  the yandere (they're hilarious fun ) and a 'sister' to the randere, the yangire. Tvtrope for more details of course. And yes, I have just typed all this out without consulting tvtropes.

I noticed the Miranda thread has a clever little "Wishlist for Miranda in ME3".

Think we should rope something together like that for Jack?

In its strictest definition, there are very few moments where Jack really is tsundere that we see. Dere-dere, certainly, but I think it's kinda fun to imagine Jack being a confusing little thing for Shep to handle; wrestling with her "reputation" as ship's badass, wanting to keep her identity distinct while becoming wrapped up in someone other than herself, and perhaps not being too sure how to handle a relationship she can't handwave the way she has in the past.

I've only glanced at that aspect of the Isabela debate (if you can call all of it that) and frankly some of the opinions raised there are disgusting. This is the 21st century, and yet some people are insistant that women remain slaves to ideals that are outmoded and were probably not even built on solid ground back in the day. Heaven forbid a woman is control of her sexual destiny in this day and age, eh? Image IPB

Sometimes you read the Motivationals thread after posting a defense of Jack, and you get nothing but joy in return...

I wonder how many people Mondo has converted in to Jackolytes.  Who knew Motivationals could be such useful proselytizing tools.

As for Jack reconciling her dere-dere tendencies with her relationship with Shepard, that's where all the best fanfiction comes from, anyway.  If Jack returns in ME3, and we get romance-specific dialogue, I'd like to see Bioware's writers themselves deal with her dere-dere elements.  Since we know that Bioware is watching, maybe the community's fanfiction writers will show them how it's done.

I would love to see more interaction between Jack and the other team members in cutscenes other than just confrontations. Kind of the way DA:O did it. I honestly believe it would not take away the focus from Shepard but it would enhance it by making his team even more 3 dimensional than they already are. Besides I'm sort of itchy to see a conversation between Jack and Mordin or more specifically Jack and Grunt.

What would Jack and Mordin have to talk about? Mordin's scientific curiosity about Jack's biotic implants system?

What? You couldn't imagine Mordin, while sharing an elevator ride with Jack, suggesting that she stop by his lab for an hour to relay the sordid details of her sexual escapades with Shepard (or otherwise) in the interests of science?

I'm not sure it would have to be that deep per se.  It could be something totally innocuous as just bumping into each other in the Mess Hall late at night with some sort of awkward comedic ending.

Yup.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of follow-up on Mordin's "sex talk" cutscene for the next game.

It'd be a lot funnier if, instead of Shepard, the applicable NPC was "pulled aside". For instance, Mordin politely reminding Jack of the imminent galactic threat and not to ride Shepard to death too soon, and so on.

-edit. Or, Mordin calling Tali downstairs and returning her diary that she "lost", while suggesting that she seek counseling.

Oh, and JACKJACKJACK!!!  She so bald.  Why can't she be normal so I can like her in my shallow, shallow way?

Jack is probably one of the very few women who can be bald and still look quite, quite attractive. :) If they were to put hair on her now, she'd probably only look silly.

We know by now that Jack appeals to a small minority of people.  If she was designed that way, to be at-odds with most people, does that make her character a success, that, in practice, she is disliked by most people?

If I was a writer for a game like Mass Effect, and people argued about my character, I'd be very proud.
