Merry Holidays to the thread (please note that I'm a Festivus advocate myself).  I may (and I stress "may") have a holiday surprise/gift/whateveryouwannacallit  later today.  Between that and turkey/ham/goose/whatever, I think I can guarantee torpor and sleepy heads (and hopefully not projectile you-know-what).

Sure, she's a top operative who reports directly to him, as per her job. That doesn't mean he trusts her anymore than that random woman bringing him the datapad in the same scene you mentioned. In all likelihood he probably keeps a closer eye and tighter check on her than the rest because she's the best (knowing his nature). What that says to me, at least, is that he has even more reason to keep her in the dark about certain other things he's got on the burner. Regardless, that's a bit too much speculation on my part because...

Hey, whatever you say.  Y'all won already okay?  Nothing I said had any merit whatsoever and y'all routed me like  I was a complete 'tarded noob.

I applaud your acumen.

...as you know, the first rule in any "debate" (not that I'd really label this as such) is - stick to what you can prove based on the facts.

What do we know? You already know!

Naw, what I was attempting was pretty much completely missed by everyone involved.  But that's cool.

Okay, as long as we're in agreement that your mind is the scene of the crime!

The sad thing is you were all so hellbent on proving me wrong you pretty much ignored everything I was actually trying to say.

But, again, that's cool.

Pacifien's a downer.

Naw, Pacifen delivers it like a boss.

Okay, first, I was just agreeing with Pacifien there, because he said neither side will win out over the other. I have come to see that he was right.
Actually I pretty much stayed on the topic I had begun, I'd thought, but it's irrelevant now.
Secondly, how is it a slam?
"Rational or otherwise", I believe you said, or something to that effect.  What else would that imply?
Ostensibly anyone debating anything is doing so with the intent to win, aren't they?
Nope.  It is possible to argue (that is have a rational discourse with opposing viewpoints) without actually trying to "win" anything.  I was trying to get somewhere.  You missed virtually every point I was trying to make because you were too busy trying to win, instead of bothering to actually pay attention.  Again, it's irrelevant now.
The whole point is to convince other people that your view is correct, be it with facts or superior reasoning or whatever else. Hell, I was trying to win...is that a bad thing?
Nope.  Except there was nothing to win.
When did I ever bash Jack? I'm crazy about Jack; like I said she's my favorite companion out of the whole bunch. I just don't think either one has to be proven to be the "good guy." I like Miranda too, if not as much as Jack. The fact that they despise each other doesn't mean I'm obligated to choose sides.
That screed had nothing to do with you personally.  It was kinda an encapsulation of the "rebuttals" I recieved.
Sorry for not joining you in your assumptions, speculations, and subsequent condemnations.
See, that's the thing - when you don't have all the facts - and you don't any more than I do - trying to (hopefully) intelligently extrapolate or infer is not a crime, nor an unacceptable way to debate - unless of course, your opponents are incapable of doing so.  Then it simply becomes an exercise in futility.  I blame myself entirely, although it has been an education.
You want so badly to make Miranda out to be some kind of monster that you make all sorts of guesses about her motivations that we simply don't have the information to back up. Did she know about Teltin and/or have the ability to do something about it? I don't know, but I doubt it.
Therefore you must be right and I wrong?  How does that work?  Why can you get away with it and I can't?  Anything to win, I guess. Also irrelevant now.
Does she really think what was done there was okay? I don't know, but I doubt it. Does she think TIM is a saint or that Cerberus is perfect? I--well no.
See above.
Like I said before, you are going with a "guilty until proven innocent" approach that just doesn't work for me. I like both companions, and the fact that they are at each other's throats doesn't have to change that.

I wasn't actually trying to convince anyone of anything.  I was simply trying to get people to look at things a smidge differently.  I didn't think I'd fail quite this badly, but, WTF - live and learn.

Have a great holiday.

I don't know if anyone in here has ever watched the television series "Firefly" or the movie "Serenity", but Jack's history reminds me of the character "River". Very different personalities, but very similar troubles as a result of their histories. Both were heavily genetically modified by people who ultimately wanted to use them for their own interests. I figured some of you might be interested in that since we're all crazed Jack fans.

With all this talk of Miranda that was going on, and the fact that you can't deny the similarities between Jack and Miranda, I came up with an interesting plot twist for me3. Both of them where some evil guys personal science project, Miranda fled from her "father" and found safety with Cerberus, Jack fled from Cerberus and I guess you could say that the Normandy is her Cerberus style refuge. Miranda's sister shows us that the threat/danger of being reclaimed by there creators is very real, so does anyone foresee the Illusive Man trying something similar? Obviously Jack wouldn't be very cooperative, but I don't imagine Miranda's sister was going to be either, and that didn't stop there "father" whoever he is. The only way I could see this work is if they could get her alone, whether this is because Shep is a douche and Jack has left, or somehow the seed of doubt could be planted in Jack's mind, where she would willing leave, even if she viewed the Normandy as a refuge. I really don't know how they could plant the seed of doubt, this is kind of where my theory falls apart. The only thing I could think of is if they positioned an agent of deception as it were, either on the Normandy or on a routinely traveled hub world, where this individual would be in contact with Jack, but that opens up another can of worms as to why Jack would even trust this person in the first place. Thoughts?

Crossing my fingers and hoping it doesn't bellyflop TOO badly.  :pinched:  Thanks for reading.

Read it before I went to bed last night, another great chapter Urdaniel.

****Spoiler for those who did not read it yet**** But one thing confused me did the sous-chef purposely mix up the food or did he simply make a mistake? Jack was going to smash his skull in and Shepard was not to happy either.

I thought Jack looks really pretty in this picture, not that she doesn't look pretty everywhere - "100 percent pure Renegade", by MichaWha.

Nice! She is always beautiful.
I like it. The coloring is so different than usual, gives it an interesting feel. I guess it makes the title fitting.

That chapter was great as usual Urdaniel, you write wonderfully. You know it's good when nothing is really "happening," yet it's still interesting and engaging. You've done a good job I think of letting Jack soften up a bit, while still maintaining her Jackitude.

Really glad you're still writing and plan to finish it off properly

Of those of you who play Fallout: New Vegas and have seen the teaser trailer for the new DLC, is there anyone else who thought "Hey! They made a Jack-lookalike one of the DLC companions?"  Just wondering.  Not planning to buy it (until it gets into an all-in-one bundle anyway) since I don't do consoles.  And frankly the concept and plotline of the DLC strike me as rather silly anyway.  But that's just me.

Anyway, I'd like to thank everyone for the kind comments on the chapter.  Very much appreciated.  Specific points:

@Razor - I probably made a mistake sticking my explanation of that in the end-notes.  But to reiterate, the conversation dealing with the who and why of the incident at the restaurant is taking place on Day 6, when they meet Ahern at Pinnacle for the sim.  I also intend to address the overall picture of things of that nature during that exchange as well, even if only briefly.  Won't promise it'll be satisfactory, though.  :)

@MHRazer -   One of my ongoing concerns is that too much is happening on the "non-happening" front; after all, where people are concerned, there are a lot of dull, mundane  periods in their lives where literally nothing is happening.  But then again, this is fiction, and it's ME, so I suppose I should just say "to heck with it."  :D

Thanks again.  Crossing my fingers and working toward getting Day 6 out ASAP.

Oh, I did. Instantly thought of her!

This character from TOR also reminded me of Jack:

Had a look. She's...bald, at least.

Other than that, the trailer kinda gave me a Saw vibe for some reason.

I'm with you on the waiting for a single DLC pack for PC, either way.

So I'm watching axl99 drawing some Jack art on LiveStream at the moment, listening to her complain about Jack's tattoos.

This makes me wonder about Jack's transition as she developed more tattoos. At some point she took more pride in her tattoo'd physique to use it in lieu of clothing. Was it the reaction of others, noticing that her tattoo physique instilled a certain fear or disdain that pushed others away? Was it looking at her arm one day and seeing the tattoos versus the scars, declaring that she could cover up whatever Cerberus could do to her?

Dammit, I also had, like, way more awesome things to talk about in regards to Jack, but those thoughts disappeared after telling the people on the livestream chat a story about monkeys.

My opinion runs to both of those options, Pacifien.  I can see her covering up her Cerberus-scars (although I personally doubt it's in the mold of "the scars aren't who I am" because she refers to her Cerberus beginnings often enough during ME) but I can also see her realizing the usefulness of being heavily-tattooed in dealings with people.  It strikes me that the ink is like a gate-check of sorts: the ones who get put off by it can be more or less dismissed - it's the ones who who get past it that bear keeping a closer eye on.

@axl - Awesome piece; not entirely convinced by the hairdo but that's just personal bias talking on my part.  Who's the victim?  I'm thinking he's not part of the cult because Jack doesn't have the haircut yet.  Or is he just the usual tomato-can cannon-fodder primarily useful only to spotlight Jack's awesomeness?  :D

EDIT: @Collider - certainly intriguing.  Unfortunately (much as I love-hate Bioware for a number of reasons too long to get into here), I really think that BW is making something of a misstep with this whole MMO thing.  Having played them on and off for nearly a decade, some design decisions for OR strike me as questionable: the one that comes most readily to mind is the decision for full voice.  When one of the first patches for say, WoW is to speed up NPC quest text, I have to wonder who thought that fully-voicing quest NPCs made sense economically and gameplay-wise.  Anyway, back on topic.
