I quite like the visor.

Can someone knowledgeable about game engines and all that enlighten me as to why ME2 is so difficult to mod for? I mean, as far as I know, shouldn't Unreal-based games be a breeze?

I can only imagine what sort of stuff would be available by now if it were as simple as Fallout 3/New Vegas... I might actually still be playing...

AFAIK you can do an 'open compile' and a 'closed compile'. In the early days of games (especially FPS'ers) it didn't really occury to devs that people would/could mod the game afaik. When they did, the devteams usually went 'meh' and let it happen. Alot of people in the developer world now are people who originally started with modding. Anyway, the Unreal Tournament series actually went out of it's way to make games moddable, including support for 'mutators' which are like minimods for the game, doing things like replacing all weapons with a specific one, or making vehicles able to stunt-jump, ect.

Of course, Mass Effect isn't like that because it's a 'closed compile'. May seem dickish but it's not too unreasonable when put in context; Mass Effect was a console game originally, so there's not much point making it an open compile-I'm not sure about this next bit, but the way the game is compiled may be required for Xbox (remember; Garrus' low res texture can't be fixed without a 2gb dl because of the way ME1 is compiled). Fast forward to ME2 and they're on a new game engine and overhauling the combat and so forth. Mod support is probably going to be a low priority, considering the Xbox version isn't going to support modding anyway.
Edit: Furthermore, the Unreal Engine 3 is the base Mass Effect II uses. Unreal Tournament has menus and codeing to support mods, it's perfectly possible Mass Effect II would have needed additional coding to support modding as well. Factor in the game just squeaked in under the 2 disc limit they had apparently been imposed (since Micrsoft charges really big for 3+ disc games) and yeah.

I think there's a much simpler reason for not supporting mods in the Mass Effect series:

To ensure save file compatibility between all the games in the trilogy.

It's EA holding the consumer down and making us pay for more content in the form of DLC. :bandit:

Is someone else then Epic even allowed to openely give the possibility to mod and support it for games running on the unreal engine?

@Loki330,

Thanks for the reply! Makes sense.

Oh, I forgot to mention: Unreal Tournament III is Pc/PS3 and the PS3 supports custom content (though I'm not sure 'Total Conversions' are. If you don't know what I mean, compare Counterstrike or Team Fortress classic to Half-life; both started as mods but they're very different games to Half-Life) however the PS3 content needs to be seperately done. So it *is* possible but the conole architecture (another point-why bother making something for a game that will only work on part of your target audience, and a very small segment of which can/will actually make custom content?) is different from a PC.

That being said I think the PS3 might just be a different folder structure for the PC. It's been a while since I looked at it, honestly.

Finally there's also the engine liscence: Bioware/EA have paid Epic for the rights to use the engine, but those rights could very well say 'For your game and your game only, with only content from only you.' Which f course means again, Bioware does a closed compile and washes it's hands of the modding scene entirely. There's loads of possible reasons for it not being mod friendly.

Same here! As far as I know, it looks like everybody who has tried to make it transparent has failed miserably or even disappeared from the Internet. I remember somebody managed to it RED, but I guess it does not solve the situation. Does anybody know some modding god we can order kindly ask to mod that visor out?

In theory you could export the model, edit it, recompile and then plonk it in the 'override' folder or something. Emphasis on the theory.

Haha funny comic :P And I too hated the visor on Jack. In fact I hate all of the helmets. With a game with so many cutscenes, anything blocking the eyes has to go. As cool as the armor looks when you're running around shooting, it looks just the opposite when having a convo with someone who is helmetless (thus suggesting you probably don't need yours on). I tend to go with the Garrus type eye piece for head shot damage and that's it.

Heh. So I'm doing Yet Another Mass Effect II Run because somehow I messed something up in the original one I was doing and anyways, Jack's on Miranda's recruitment mission. After the Asari snarks '...or does Cerberus let you **** around the galexy in that outfit' Jack piped up 'I like her. Are we still recruiting?' before apparently taking a pop at someone sticking their head up above cover in the background. Are there any other situations like this she adds her thoughts?

Well, there's Thane's recruitment mission (you were talking about Miranda's loyalty mission, btw), where Jack mentions that she should be taking notes from you if you push the merc through the window.

I think she might also comment on Shepard's instincts if s-/he offs the new merc recruit during Samara's recruitment mission, when you find out that the girl was a vicious killer all along.

Along with her comment during Miranda's loyalty mission and her opinion of Shepard for pushing the merc out the window, I believe Jack also mentions the cruel nature of sending the Biotic God to his doom, though acknowledges its entertainment value.

I believe she says something to the effect of "I knew I smelled murder on that b---h!"

I love that part (pushing him through the window), it's just so irresistibly fun. I could never go full paragon, I just always have to be a mix of both.

That is true, she does make a comment to the effect. (I normally make him take a nap, but I save first and try the renegade option for fun:D and then reload and play nice. The biotic god may be one of the funniest parts of the game:lol:)

Speaking of Jack's comments during missions, I also like her comment on the dead colonists on the disabled collector vessel: if Shepard says "they did not deserve this" she replies "you get what you get. Deserve's got nothing to do with it"
She also mutters "holy sh*t" when you reach that point where you can see billions of... ehm... collector pods in the ceiling (or whatever they're called).
And, of course, "I knew Cerberus would screw me again. I'm going to crush his head" when the vessel comes back to life.

Yes, she's an endless source of fun :-)

Doesn't she say something along the lines of "rather being dead than some f*cked up bug creature"?

Does it happen when you discover that collectors are actually protheans? I vaguely remember something like that.

Actually, I had forgotten that all of Jack's lines during Legion's loyalty mission are full of win. She manages to capture exactly how I feel about the whole rewrite/destroy decision.
