As for Jack's poem? I didn't like it either, I don't think it suited her personality to submit a poem to a public domain for everyone to see. I didn't think she would want people seeing into her private feelings, anonymously sent or not.

I think very few of us are so self-assured we don't want to seek acceptance in someone or something else. Jack, if anyone, seems likely to want it.

Wanted to show support for Jack in ME3. I really like her, just a great character.

That article on the use of tattoos for the construction of a personal identity is a very interesting read.

So many people complain about Jack's tattoos that they don't even notice the surgical scars underneath them. I mean think about what Jack might feel about them as she looks at herself in the mirror. The scars won't ever go away, nor will those medical tattoos that were likely used to mark all the places to install implants and insert injections. Would you want to be constantly reminded that you were a labrat your whole life?

So Jack busted out of Teltin and killed her tormentors in the process. Cerberus puts a bounty on Jack. Miranda calls her on it, and Jack retorts with a threat.

I'm not surprised by the reaction at all.

That would explain the tattoos, the constant life on the run, prison breaks, criminal records. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if certain crimes on Jack's rap sheet had been fabricated by Cerberus just so they can increase their chances of  getting her back.

I didn't know that Jack's tattooes covered surgical scars?

Tattooes are great for expressing personality. And Cerberus only wanted Jack because she was a super-powered anomoly in terms of human biotics. Selfish b******s...

And Jack doesn't strike me as one to want to find acceptance in others, but maybe I misread what you put?

See that line along her spine? That's one of them. As I mentioned in another thread, once you know what to look for it's pretty horrific just how many (and how big the) scars she has are

I think Jack's poem is perfect for her. I mean, no-one picks up a pen and scribbles like a genius first time, every time. Philip Larkin wrote some classics, but he wrote a couple of self-indulgant stinkers too. What great poet doesn't? Also, most poets have a phase in their youth where they, to steal a metaphore from Henry Rollins (another great poet), dress in black, dye their hair black, paint their nails black, grab some black ink, some black paper and scribble manic poetry because they are "The King or Queen of Pain". Everyone has an introspective/depressive period in their youth (or at least pretty much everyone) and everyone has a rebellious and confrontational period, and as much as Jack has lived a life of wild experience, she's never had a childhood or awkward teenage phase. That all was stolen from her. So it's only natural that when she finds a place to stop for a while, she begins to experience all the things she's missed out on over the years; this explains the yearning for acceptance and approval, her moments of unfocussed and occasionally childish anger, and the way she relishes in reputation. While Jack is an adult, parts of her are still very much a child, and the poem is a perfect representation of the amalgam of facets to her personality... it's why I think she's not beyond childish practical jokes, goofing off instead of working, sulking and general displays of displeasure that suit someone ten years younger.

Posting this here, because not only does Jack get a lot of positive face-time in this video, there's also a bit where you can really see her scars (I think it's from one of the original trailers, but whatevs).

As for what type of music...I agree with axl. I think Jack might be a real secret music snob. And that she'd love the 1812 Overture, or a lot of Tchaikovsky's stuff with great percussion.

I love your explanation, really thought out. I feel better about Jack's poem now, at first I didn't like it.

And I just looked at a Jack screenie, and I can really see the scars. I can't believe I never saw them before, I just thought it was part of her tattooes. It just makes me appreciate her more as a character.

Somehow I imagine Jack listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong etc. or something really weird (Elcor music, anyone?)

And another picture (sorry, just finished all-Jack playthrough so I have lots of these).

The lighting is bad, but I blame Fraps and its ****ty timing.

She looks pretty sneaky there. Hehe.

I was listening to undisclosed desires by Muse, and that song reminded me of Jack for some reason.

It's not bad, but a friction of second before the lighting was better :) I still have the savegame just before the SM, so maybe I'll try to capture it once more (and get a no-life achievement in the process :P).

@ Zewuok: Can you try playing the Fraps file using Quicktime and then use the scrubber to find the exact frame you needed?

I'm afraid it won't work- my Old Machine gets all weird while recording movies and freezes from time to time (just for a moment, but that's enough to mess with the video), so I stick to taking screenshots.

That's funny.  Now that I think about it, I doubt Jack would consider herself associated with any human organization, other than the human species. She probably wouldn't want anything to do with any nation, planet, or the Alliance, for that matter.

I could see her join the Spectres only because Shep would recommend her and that would be hell of an outlet for her frustrations. I'd imagine she would request Cerberus jobs.  All that rage focussed into a positive force could be quite useful.

The only problem is that to everyone she would seem undiciplined and psychotic unless she puts on a metaphorical mask in public and is all stoic like Bobba Fett or something. It's would be like a military version of MY FAIR LADY.

I only say this because though I could see her settle down only if Shep leaves the Alliance and she has no where else to go but she would feel uncomfortable or out of place like that.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mondo - (nice Rollins ref, too, glad I'm not the only one ;)), a poem is the perfect way for Jack to attempt the inexpressible - pain is never anything to take lightly, and prose just doesn't cut it.  If anyone has the actual cred to say she's even close to "The Queen of Pain", it's Ms. Nought.

As to art, stuff Jack likes or secretly indulges in?  I can see her doing the following and kicking serious butt in the doing:

This.

Nuff said.

I'm too...Youthful. I mean, I'm late, getting to my own question, but I didn't peg Jack for being the one to listen to...Well, I'll call them classics. I always thought she'd listen to heavy metal, rock, rap, whatever. Half the songs would deal with killing someone, the others would actually have meaning behind them.

I believe she'd play the violent ones whenever there's someone nearby. And the meaningful ones, whenever she's alone.

Yeah, I'm with you on on the music angle. I think some are projecting a little bit too much of their own preference onto the character. At least that's the impression I get quite a bit when reading the usual "What would Jack..." query.

It'd be nice if she had some unusually eclectic musical tastes. Unfortunately, I see her listening to some generic hard rock or metal (ugh). She also probably eats greasy fries and burgers, smokes Marlboro reds, drinks Budweiser beer and doesn't brush her teeth regularly before going to bed.

-edit. Not that there's anything wrong with that stuff!

-edit. Actually...

Well, I don't know about the brushing teeth bit, seeing as they're white as can be.

The rest of the it, though, yeah. I pictured her indulging in the repulsive lifestyle: binge drinking, fighting people at the smallest of comments, negative or not. Hell, I know most say she'd not want to take drugs, but you never know.

I also picture her "easing" Shepard into doing the exact same thing, and calliing him a ****, whenever he declines. Assuming, of course, the Shepard in question romanced her.

I mean, you KNOW it's going to be difficult. If you romance Jack, expect difficulties. In all their forms.
