I played ME1 as a female shepard soldier and completed it. Then in ME2 I went with same female shepard - new character no import, as engineer. It really felt in place, despite my 1st shepard was a brounette, militarist type, while 2nd was a blonde tech girl, it was an excellent performing on her side. Then I wanted to play a different class and went with a male Shepard. So made a Vanguard. But something struck me right from the begining... The male shepard acting / voice performance is really weak compared to female one. He sounds like a whimp, no offense. When fem shepard changes tones, takes postures reacting to dialogue choices, etc it really fits in perfectly, is natural and it imersses you in the story. The male version just seems forced and unfitting. Especially when there are other males taking part in conversation, the difference explodes. It feels like every other male character in game has better acting / voice over than shepard - which feels wrong. Check out how the female Shepard tone changes, insinuations, persuassion, threats, romance, pity, anger etc are amasingly expressed in dialogue, while male version it just doesn't fit at all. I personally had a burst of laughter when my male Shepard told Miranda Don't forget who's in charge here. It sounded like Austin Powers or something --- funny, but not something that would impose him as an authoritar / leader type of person....

All this sort of prevents me from delving into character with a male Shepard in ME2.

Your opinions / experiences with the RPG feeling between the acting of male / female shepards?

Totally agree! just started my second play-through(was disappointed w/ no real girl-on-girl action w/ squad members) and decided to start a new male one. It just seems the voice actor is just bad...

Female Shephard feels like her own character, Male Shephard feels like I'm playing "PC".

I know Mark Meer has talent (hell, he had plenty of inflection as the Captain of the Rayya...), but Jennifer Hale just does a monumental job at bringing a life of her own into Femshep.

That's a huge thing too, very rarely is the player character fully voiced.

So, yeah, agree completely.

I started ME one as a female just to see how different it was. Just couldn't really get into it. This may be because was odd to play female or because i'd tired of the game, but it just didn't work.

I find male shepards voice fits my male shepard, but i dont think it suits the box-art shepard

Just a point to the OP, you should import your first character if you didn't already. Lots of small bonuses and easter eggs and things in ME2 with your original shepard.

Which is a pitty. I am not saying that Thane or Garrus are not interesting characters by any means, but personally I was fascinated by Jack. Having to play a whimp just to get more ouf of Jack feels zzzzZZzzz.

Further dialog with non-Romance interests (or even Romance possibilities...it was planned out as least partially) was another thing on a very short list of issues I had with the game.

Meer's voice acting is better in this game than in ME1, especially towards the end of the game, but its still inferior to femshep. This is not because Meer is bad however, it's because Jennifer Hale is the most talented voice actor in all of video games. It's not really a fair comparison.

I honestly just think it was his take on the character (one I don't care for), he's quite talented in his own right from what I've heard of him.

Female Shepard paragon playthrough was truly beautiful.... the ending (no spoilers) was truly inspiring and heroic via the female paragon route. When you need to make that final paragon or renegade choice, I just felt so awe-inspired by how my character delivered the final lines of dialogue (credit to Jennifer Hale).

The whole final stage of the game is just so... heroic... and it was delivered amazingly as a female shepard.

I've gone through as male shepard as well (paragon).. and it was also pretty good, but I don't get that choked-up feeling inside the way the male actor delivers those last-stage lines. Every time I replay the end as female shepard though, I get goose-bumps.

Most moving experience I've had in my 20 years of video gaming. (I became very attached to my characters though as they're all imported from ME1... and ME1 was the most awe-inspiring story/game I've played up until ME2).

I prefer playing a female Shepard for my Renegade playthroughs in both ME1 and ME2 because the sheer strength that comes through in Jennifer Hale's work is just thrilling to hear.

Completely agree. If you aren't playing the Hale voiced Shepard, you aren't playing the real Mass Effect 2. She really sells it.

I actually thought the exact opposite. In ME1, I really enjoyed playing a femshep because of the voice acting, and felt that Meer really didn't do a good job in comparison. However, in ME2, I've become really dissappointed with Hale's perfomance. At some points, she has a lot more emotion in her voice than Meer, but so far I've found that she sounds really tired or monotone, most of the time. I like her voice, but it seemed like she just didn't care about doing a proper performance. Meer, on the other hand, did much much better than in ME1. While he doesn't manage to capture the emotion that femshep sometimes has, he's overall a lot more steady in his perfomance compared to Hale.

That's just my opinion, of course, and I haven't played through the entire game as femshep yet either, so maybe it'll change - but from my experience at this point, male shepards voice was overall better than femsheps. I can see why some people would prefer femsheps voice, but her perfomance really doesn't justify bashing Meer.

My male sheppards fits perfectly with the voice. Personally, I think he did a great job in both games.

I absolutely loved Hale as Bastila.

Where is everyone getting this bad voice acting from male shep? He does a great job, female on the other hand sounds same as ME1 where she's "trying" to sound tough & I just dont buy it. Sure she's good, but male shep is definately not any worse...I can't even stand playing female because of how forceful she sounds in every single sentence, I mean is she angry or something? To me male shep comes off sounding more cocky if anything, thats the only difference I see in either. Ones a chick trying to act like a guy, and ones a cocky ass guy. But whatever, everyone has their opinion I guess.

I played as FemShep in ME1 and I still love her voice in ME2.

However, I noticed that Hale seems to change the way she voiced FemShep though.

She sounds a bit raucous at times. It's like she substitute some of the "manliness" in her voice in ME1 for "badassness" in ME2, which is a good change in my opinion.

I was talking about this with a friend and I came to the conclusion that it's really what you're looking for out of your character.

In my opinion, Hale is an absolutely fantastic VA; she has lots of experience and tosses in plenty of wonderful, subtle inflections that are lacking in Meer's interpretation. Hale obviously has a very clear perspective on what kind of woman Shepard is. She's a strong, confident and extremely powerful individual. The only problem is that this can make the roleplaying element a tad difficult. It's fine if you're playing that kind of Shepard- someone loud, someone assertive, someone strong-willed- but if you want to play anything else it can make the dialogue sound very strange. Say you want to play a somewhat timid Engineer- obviously as a military woman she's still going to be just as assertive and strong-willed, but it's hard to maintain that "shy" concept when FemShep talks all saucily at Jacob (not that I mind, of course.) What I like about Meer is that his idea of Shepard is clear, but not necessarily as... vividly expressed as Hale's. It's easier for me to make male Shepards with wildly varying personalities. In a way, Meer's "monotone" voice (as people tend to call it, though I personally believe that's somewhat unfair and mean, honestly) allows for more of the inflections to be left to the imagination.

Really though, that's the problem with having the player character in an RPG have a voice actor. We can make all sorts of different characters, but in the end part of it will always be that VA's interpretation. I don't necessarily mind, I think both interpretations are great, but that obstacle will always be there.

Unless Bioware started giving us several different voice options for each gender... but that might be asking a bit much.

Both voice actors do great jobs, but I personally prefer Meer because he sounds like a real Military battle commander..

Hale's overly emotional rendition is far less realistic than Meer's.

ZzZZ, I'm beinging to think this whole voice thing is fabrication, since it's completely stupid and trivial yet keeps coming up.

The female shep does have more emotion in her lines, the male shep does not. Like it or not, the male shep is far, far more likely the voice of a seasoned military officer. That is how they talk and carry themselves, So, the male sheppard comes off a lot more like most of the "captains" in the science fiction world of cinema/TV. Jean luc picard, Jack o'neill, etc.

I have no problem with FemShep's voice, but her delivery just seems slower.

"That will be...all."

This very same topic keeps popping up twice a day, and always the same...

While I prefer Hale by far, I've to admit Meer improved a lot - it's still not something I'd like to listen to for hours, Hale is more "alive" and "real" for me.

But honestly, that like arguing over music, there's no right or wrong, go with your taste and enjoy - both Meer/Hale will be back for any DLC and ME3 anyway ;)
