I'm sure everyone who played the original was aware of the Geth being the resident cannon fodder that we plowed through on nearly every single mission - I must admit, the lack of different enemies began to frustrate me after a couple of playthroughs.

In Mass Effect 2 though, and it may just be me, but the Cannon Fodder is nearly always Mercenaries and Mechs. I almost miss killing scores and scores of Geth. And this is one of the very few things that annoyed me about Mass Effect 2 - the galaxy seems to be running on Blue Suns, Eclipse and Blood Pack Mercenaries and Mechs.

The Mechs confused me at first considering the absolute no tolerance rule in Citadel space for constructed AI programs, even as simple as a a Mech. Friends have said that because we are mainly operating in the lawless Terminus Systems that these rules do not apply for ME2, but it seems to me that the Devs just needed to come up with some new Cannon Fodder to shoot and this is what annoys me. For example, the Alliance uses these Mechs in Colony's like Freedom's Progress while they are clearly apart of the Council, which means no AI programs. Another friend has stated that the Mechs aren't true AI programs, but what else are they? They pick their own targets, and can be controlled through one large network - at need to take cover, reload etc. so obviously have some motor skills that would denote an AI standing.

And then the constant waves of Mercs all over the galaxy - I wouldn't have minded so much if there was more variety, not only in classes of these Mercs but also the companies. Apparently between 3 Merc bands, the entire Terminus System is looked after - and there seems to tons of them. During the Garrus recruitment mission on Omega, he remarks that in that mission alone we would have destroyed many of the Merc numbers - but if you keep playing, it seems like I'm killing thousands of these Mercs, which seem to have their hand in every shady operation galaxy wide.

Whenever there needed to be someone to shoot at, whether on a main mission or N7 or loyalty quest, there was Mercs or Mechs there to shoot at.

So, that's my little rant over - and I'm hoping for some more variation in enemies next time around in ME3. I mean, for a shooter based RPG, there was very little variety. Thoughts?
