The Circle tower was the worst - he died at least once on every level going up, the Ogre at the top would take him out in one blow - each time. It took me 3 tries to defeat the Ogre, first time was just a F-uped mess, second time I almost had him, 3rd times a charm. But Alistair just got whipped out right off the bat each time.

I can't believe he is supposed to be the main tank. Alistair drops in battle faster than a hot potato. It is still early in my game, so hopefully I can find better armor for him some where, before the game runs out of heal potions.

At the beginning of the game he will not be the tankiest tank.
Get him better armor as soon as possible, always equip a shield, and use sword/board skills in the skill tree that increase his defense. Up his dexterity and constitution to make him better at dodging and have more health and resilience.
Use the Warrior ability "Threaten" to pull aggro back to him once he is powerful enough to stand up to enemy focus-fire. This way, you only have to focus on healing one character.
