My second play through, I made my PC a tank and had far greater success that way than I ever did with Al.

This character has just compleated the big fight where the King gets killed. So hopefully It gets better.
Last night I started a second PC with the city elf (female) origin and has just gone into the wilds. Had the same issue with Alistair getting his ars kicked.
He still hasn't leveld with either PC - So something might be wrong there. I take that back, I think he leveled once with my first PC, but not yet with my second.
I'll check his tactics again - I also set him up to drink a heal potion if he gets under 25%, but he seems to ignore that and I must manually do it.
I am betting that the combat is set up to take out the Grey Wardens first as I noticed in the wilds the Darkspawn seemd to focus on him and the other 2 wannabies hardly got hurt so that may be why he dies so quickly as well.
set heal pots for under 50% on all melee, it really helps to stop them getting burst damg dead.

Current party setup is Alistair in that equip, my arance warrior in the full juggernaut gear, and sten in either the dwarf legion gear or a mixture of plate, effort, and diligence. I use morrigan with a spirit healer spec. The arcane warrior and morrigan have cone of cold and some aoe spells. I can pretty much tear through anything.
Basically cone of cold and shatter then have alistair taunt and that's that.

He is doing much better now. He's got good armor and a decent weapon now and can hold his own fairly well.
Currently I have been running him as tank, Moraggen (sp), the Red head as archer and myself as the back stabber. We cut through the mobs quite easily.

I found early in the game that that dog was the best tank.
Yeah dog is better tank than early in the game than Allistar as dog have more hp than Allistar guy but later in the game dogs turn out to be pretty weak. It is also huge nuicance that dog need his own special healing snacks and cant use potions like rest of the party.
what? my dog drinks potions you must be doing something wrong

Alistair is the tankiest tank there is. If you're dying as often as you say, it's all your own fault. Not Alistair's.
What? Alistair can think for himself - If he can't handle the heat he needs to get out of the Kitchen!
My original post was made quite some time ago when I first started. Now I have learned the tactics and such and he survives a lot longer. I'm not even sure how someone found this post, it must have been on page 800 by now.

I can't believe he is supposed to be the main tank. Alistair drops in battle faster than a hot potato.
All the Tanks are pretty bad at the beginning. And by all I mean all two of them: Shale and Alistair.
In Alistair's case you need Shield wall and Shield Mastery then he is a great tank. Go directly to Shield Wall do not waste your time with any other talents until he get that. Then keep it up at all times and work on those passive shield talents. Bravery is good also.
Edit: Wait a month old thread? Whoops sorry.

The extra stats and talents i got being the tank as my PC was really helpful meaning i was using massive armor very early while with Alistair it will take longer for him to be a better tank than you think.
At the end of the day tho its all about how you use your Tank. Dont expect them to just grab the attention of everyone and survive magically by not controlling him.
Make sure the Tank is the first person the mob see to gain initial threat. Make sure Threaten is always on. Use Shield defense until you have shield mastery/expertise and wall then only use Shield wall. Get Taunt and only use it when the Tank looses mobs or more appear.
The Shield attacks are the last on the list to get imo.
Remember the Heavier armor you wear the more likely Mobs will attack you first. Hence why you should pump Str to get thebest armor on the tank.
Stat wise pump Str every level for Massive armor while also getting Dex to 26 minimum for shield talents. Then once Str is 40-42 pump dex, with an occasional 1 into Con and Wil every couple lvls.
