Having a healer helps him not die, too. Which you probably don't have, if it's still early in the game.

Alistair is doing rather nicely in my group as a tank. Threaten + Shield Wall is quite a nice little ability coupling which i almost always have activated and sustained on him prior to engaging into battle. Add to that the fact he is sporting the Warden armor gained from the Soldier's Peak quest line (DLC) and he is a pretty burly tank. I intend to go and upgrade this armor at the Keep, I just had to boost his Strength up to a nice and high level so he could wear it due to the resulting strength requirements after the smith at the keep got done working on the armor. It came to be 38 iirc, however the resulting statistic boost after the smithys upgrade is quite worth it!

Personally, I never cared much for Alistair as a tank. I thought that he was way weaker, at all levels, than he actually should have been.

My second play through, I made my PC a tank and had far greater success that way than I ever did with Al.

I've used Alistair as tank on my every playtrough so far, he doesn't do that bad. Currently his duty is distracting enemies away from my girl with the "big guns" ;)

And by that i mean two-handed swords.

This character has just compleated the big fight where the King gets killed. So hopefully It gets better.

Last night I started a second PC with the city elf (female) origin and has just gone into the wilds. Had the same issue with Alistair getting his ars kicked.

He still hasn't leveld with either PC - So something might be wrong there. I take that back, I think he leveled once with my first PC, but not yet with my second.

I'll check his tactics again - I also set him up to drink a heal potion if he gets under 25%, but he seems to ignore that and I must manually do it.

I am betting that the combat is set up to take out the Grey Wardens first as I noticed in the wilds the Darkspawn seemd to focus on him and the other 2 wannabies hardly got hurt so that may be why he dies so quickly as well.

set heal pots for under 50% on all melee, it really helps to stop them getting burst damg dead.

He gets better the later you have him in the game. Currently, I have him equipped with dragon scale armor, the heavy duty kind, and an earth shaker shield. I'm trying to find him a decent weapon. I have a longsword with 40% physical resistance runes and the deadhead charge. If I throw down a heroic defense or a glyph and a regen he can stand for a long time, against multiple enemies.

Current party setup is Alistair in that equip, my arance warrior in the full juggernaut gear, and sten in either the dwarf legion gear or a mixture of plate, effort, and diligence.  I use morrigan with a spirit healer spec.  The arcane warrior and morrigan have cone of cold and some aoe spells.  I can pretty much tear through anything.

Basically cone of cold and shatter then have alistair taunt and that's that.

Never, ever set heal potions to tactics, that's a total waste. Always handle two things yourself heals and CC.

Wow, I thought this post was dead.

He is doing much better now. He's got good armor and a decent weapon now and can hold his own fairly well.
Currently I have been running him as tank, Moraggen (sp), the Red head as archer and myself as the back stabber. We cut through the mobs quite easily.

He does great with my groups. It really depends on your group composition, as well as how much you actually micro-manage your playthrough. If you rely a lot on tactics, then he's probably not that great... but if you set up good tactics for him or micro-manage your fights a lot, then he's really good.

I found early in the game that that dog was the best tank.

Yeah dog is better tank than early in the game than Allistar as dog have more hp than Allistar guy but later in the game dogs turn out to be pretty weak. It is also huge nuicance that dog need his own special healing snacks and cant use potions like rest of the party.

Alistair is the tankiest tank there is. If you're dying as often as you say, it's all your own fault. Not Alistair's.

What? Alistair can think for himself - If he can't handle the heat he needs to get out of the Kitchen! Image IPB

My original post was made quite some time ago when I first started. Now I have learned the tactics and such and he survives a lot longer. I'm not even sure how someone found this post, it must have been on page 800 by now.

I can't believe he is supposed to be the main tank. Alistair drops in battle faster than a hot potato.

All the Tanks are pretty bad at the beginning.  And by all I mean all two of them: Shale and Alistair.

In Alistair's case you need Shield wall and Shield Mastery then he is a great tank.  Go directly to Shield Wall do not waste your time with any other talents until he get that.  Then keep it up at all times and work on those passive shield talents.  Bravery is good also.

Edit: Wait a month old thread?  Whoops sorry.

Alistair really is meant to be a tank. From his loyalty buffs (constitution), to his itemization (there is an end game shield that is meant for him) his destiny is to be a tank.

I had the same problem... until I equiped all 4 pieces of armor that you get from the Brecilan Forest Graves (be warned they spawn bosses + minions). I had previously used medium to keep his fatigue low but... then I just said bleep it and now I love looking at him during dialogue in his shiney heavy armor.

And yea... He can't keep the attention of enemies to save my life.

I have Alistar and myself as an Arcane Warrior tank. I out tank him, but he gets damaged only slightly more than I do (which is almost non-exsistant), and with holy smite, Shield Wall, and all those nice stuns/damage moves, he is pretty nasty. I am on normal difficulty and we absolutely plow through even the toughest battles. My biggest pain is keeping enough lyrium pots in stock, but now I just walk around with enough stuff to make 100 pots at any time. I find my money is better spent on crafting items than anything else (my equipment is better than 99% of the badass really expensive things you can buy anyways). And I don't need higher levels of pots because of all the sustainables me and Wyen have. Hands down the best tank in the game is an Arcane Warrior. I can get overwhelmed by the poisonous spiders in the deep roads and they don't do any damage to me whatsoever. Heck, even the high dragon on top of the Urn temple barely damaged me when it tried to chomp on me. The hardest thing is keeping the aggro, but since me and Alistar are also the ones dealing out the most damage, we can keep the hate between us pretty easy.

I can understand why people have trouble with Alistair as a tank, but thats only because i was the Tank on the first playthrough and so my toon was fleshed out more than him early on, and i was playing as the tank more than the other chars.

The extra stats and talents i got being the tank as my PC was really helpful meaning i was using massive armor very early while with Alistair it will take longer for him to be a better tank than you think.

At the end of the day tho its all about how you use your Tank. Dont expect them to just grab the attention of everyone and survive magically by not controlling him.

Make sure the Tank is the first person the mob see to gain initial threat. Make sure Threaten is always on. Use Shield defense until you have shield mastery/expertise and wall then only use Shield wall. Get Taunt and only use it when the Tank looses mobs or more appear.

The Shield attacks are the last on the list to get imo.

Remember the Heavier armor you wear the more likely Mobs will attack you first. Hence why you should pump Str to get thebest armor on the tank.

Stat wise pump Str every level for Massive armor while also getting Dex to 26 minimum for shield talents. Then once Str is 40-42 pump dex, with an occasional 1 into Con and Wil every couple lvls.

It gets much better when you get massive armor. Get the warden's keep addon to get some early massive armor.
