So far i just upgrade from a GeForce 9800GTX+ 512mb to a Radeon 5870.  I started up Mass Effect 2 and for some reason i now do not even get 60fps..    The 9800 did close to constant 60fps.   I know it uses Unreal Engine 3 but is there something that is wrong?

Microsoft Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition (Build 7600)
AMD Phenom II 955 BE Stock Clock (V8 Coolermaster heat sink)
4gb HyperX Ram DDR800
Radeon 5870 Clocked at 925core and 1280 memory

I can run other games smooth as silk...  So far this game isn't running so hot.  Same settings for both cards.

Any Suggestions?

Did you make sure to uninstall the Nvidia drivers before removing it from your system?

That. ATI Catalyst does not like any remnant of nVidia ForceWare Drivers installed and it is the same ordeal vice-versa.

Yes I did everything nvidia is uninstalled. Onlything from the company still installed is the physx subsystem required by unreal engine 3.

So you say other games run fine, just not ME2? That sounds weird. Got the same card, though not overclocked, but i also got i7 920 @ 4GHz, and 6GB Ram, and the game runs just fine here.

Anyway, which driver version are you using? You could try some other sets of driver and see if they give you any difference.

Im running the latest 10.1 drivers.

What is odd is it doesn't per-se "slow down" it just seems to run slow. I checked the frame rate cap and its at 60. It seems to be a solid frame rate even in a firefight it just seems to be about 10 frames or more lower.

I'm wondering if this is due to the loss of the added PhysX support?

You should try uninstalling PhysX. ATI will tell you they have something similar to NVIDIA's PhysX but they don't. If you really wanted a DirectX 11 card you should've just waited for the GTX 470/480 with FERMI.

Also, make sure you have Driver Sweeper installed when you uninstall the old NVIDIA stuff. You can download it here.

Uninstall all NVIDIA drivers at Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel then reboot in safe mode and open Driver Sweeper. You'll be shocked how many old driver files get left behind.

Thank you for being no help at all.

To explain, the reason I went with ATI for a video card was that 1) it was at an excelent price  2) I have a AMD processor and Motherboard 3) unified driver support for my motherboard and video card.

Now the point is...  The 5870 generally gets 1.5-2x the performance of my previous card on all games.  I am trying to troubleshoot and find out if this is just a limit to the engine or if this is purely a driver issue.  Also with the flexibility of the UT3 engine if there are any tweaks that can be done to make things run smoother.

Also the PhysX subsystem needs to be installed for any UT3 game to run. It will fail to start without it with an error message

Well I finally have a day to myself and I ran some benchmarks. I tested on my system on the 5870 both in stock timing and OCed to 1035/1300 (5200 Effective) (Footnote: This was extensively tested overnight with no lockups or overheating. Temp kept in the 55-60c range). And then Also tested with my 9800GTX+ Black Edition at 785 Core Stock.

I ran through Mordin's Loyalty mission on each setting. On both settings on the 5870 i got nearly the same result in speed. It ran at a locked 60fps for most until the confrontation midway through. Each instance with the 5870 I went down to about 15-22fps and stayed there. On stock speeds it was roughly 11-18fps. The ensuing fight I did not break 40fps.

I ran through with my 9800gtx+. Which has only half the ram and significantly less speed... Per the previous run I was at a rather steady locked 60fps through most of it. I did experience slowdown on the confrontation. Though the ensuing cutscene I only experienced a drop to roughtly 38-45fps. The ensuing fight stayed at a pretty constant 55-58fps.

Now I know this is still pretty good in the FPS department... The reason I wish to upgrade is that not all games do I get anything outstanding, cannot turn on AA keep AF down low, etc... Id like to upgrade to something that will keep the clocks for a while. Though Im rather upset that nVidia has made it impossible to find a 295 anywhere at all... And they refuse to give any information on pricing and availability for the GF100 based cards...

This is highly frustrating... Either way, im going to take back the 5870 as that kind of drop is pretty inexcusable for how much I paid for the card.

Just an idea.

The problem is happening with two different video cards one ATI the other Nvidia, and you can reproduce the issue. What if it's not the video card that's causing it?

hey i'm having almost the exact same problem. I have all the latest drivers and tweaked the graphics card for best performance, but the game still runs slower. I will mention that my ver. of physx runs as a 32 bit and my video card runs as a 64 bit on windows 7. I'm playing with the idea that it might be the sound. The frame rate might drop to sync properly with the sound.

LOL nVidia is still pretending to make "new" video cards?

Hahah! Made the laugh today.

Anyway, the problem seems to be from the department of "ATI will release the next driver that will give a 100% performance increase in Mass Effect 2."

I solved the problem by installing the new version of driver Asus 8.703 RC2

ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/vga/ATI/ait8703_RC2_win7vista.zip

or asus support site in HD5770 section vga

Thanks, I also had the same card and drivers (10.2), and ended up wth a lot of stutter - mainly when pausing during combat.  Installing the ASUS drivers you mentioned helped a great deal <3

Apparantly you are one of those that doesn't like Nvidia. They are making a new card to be compatible with DX 11.

In general i am frustrated with nVidia with their "The way its meant to be played" optimization for their hardware.  This is ultimately what I blame for why I can take a less capable nVidia card and literally get 2-3x the performance.  ATI made a great card with a lot of horsepower its just sad that there are so games that it just literally sucks too hard at.

With their track record with getting those FERMI cards to the market I am not about to wait around for them any longer.  I got a 295 which runs ME2 at almost at the frame rate cap at all times.  (I get occational slowdown to about 40-50fps around the last mission.  )   I like ATI and I want to support them, sadly right now until some engines get out of using calls for nVidia cards, I just wont feel like i'm getting my 400-500 dollars worth out of the card.

My i7/5870 ASUS card stutters often. Using HDMI 7.1 audio and ATI 10.2+hotfix.

SO you are saying the actual OEM drivers work better from ASUS? Never thought of that. WIll give it a try.

Are you using HDMI audio???

Try reinstalling the drivers again, i had this problem with L4D2, the fps would stick at 20fps for some reason, 3rd reinstall and it worked fine.

I run with a q9300 @ 3 ghz 4gb ram and a asus 5870 with 10.3 pre drivers.
Works like a dream.
Constant 60fps and almost constant  60fps in eyefinity also.
