Can someone explain this to me? If women are suppose to undergo a mutation from being exposed to the taint, how do we have female Grey Wardens?

When I find something like that I usually use the blanket excuse "Its in the script.". Kind of like how NO one knows about the Joining ritual prior to you joining and then once you do its like Duncan took out a press release and everyone was talking about it.

The taint you get is altered special version.

The same reason why males don't become ghouls within days of becoming Grey Wardens. The Joining gives you the Taint, but slows the effects so that the more serious effects aren't felt until a few decades later.

So, women become Wardens, and they just make sure to get themselves offed in the Deep Roads before they start to change.

The blood of the common darkspawn might have the mentioned effect on women who get the taint. But you must also remember that the darkspawn blood that Grey Wardens drink in the Joining, also has the blood of a Archdemon also.

lol Duncan always gave me mixed feelings during the ritual. Oh? You don't want to drink that? We can't have you leave. *stabby stab stab* And then later find out that it is common knowledge that there are Grey Wardens that flee from their obligation.

Edit: That's true, I guess the mages add a potent counter agent.

Wow... short memory, girls.

Ever remember the first time you meet Alistair... he makes a comment about how "rare" female Warden's are.

Now we know why...

It does take a loooong time of constant exposure to errr... the mutagenic agents they use... to make a Broodmother, a single drink won't make her transform in seconds.

Personally, I cannot believe any female Warden would want to walk the Deep Roads for her death after seeing a Broodmother.

We are not told that women are immune to being transformed. They may resist becoming ghouls, but after a few weeks of... *shudder*... what they do - who knows?

I think my girl-Wardens would probably scream "Screw you! I choose suicide!" rather than chance being dragged off alive by darkspawn.

ewwwwwww...

Yeah, I don't think the dwarf who became the Broodmother just got a bit of darkspawn blood, from the sound of Hespith's "poem" it was a long, detailed process. Almost like a joining ritual in and of itself.

If I recall correctly, both male and female exposed to the taint become ghouls, the transformation of a female into a broodmother requires special treatment over a long peroid of time.

Also, female wardens may be rare, but there a plenty in the lore, think Sophia Dryden, Fiona, or Martine (in Journeys).

Ok if your a female dalish elf, you where already tainted and would have become a broodmother if you didn't do the joining. Duncan says it will cure you, and I don't really think he was lieing about it having healing properties...

They just don't drink the darkspawn blood theres a bunch of magic and a hint of archdemon blood involved in the joining, that I imagine that is all preparation to avoid such transformations...

Lmao that would explain why there's not a lot of female wardens (shudders).

Seriously though whatever the concoction is thats made for the Joining has something to do with stopping that.

As far as Fiona somehow, someway she's cured of the taint n part of it had to do with a certain brooch that n other magics that were involved...

Sofia ended up becoming possesed so she don't count lmao...

I've always been curious why there haven't been too many Grey Warden women n why aren't they mentioned more... Has a female Warden ever slain n killed an Archdemon, hmm that could be 1 way of remembering your warden if she sacrificed herself in later game's... So-n-so was the first female warden to slay an archdemon n gave her life doing it...

Edit: P.S. Alistair was so moved by this display n he loved the Warden so much that he never was able to marry anyone or love anyone else again...  (You know Anora's reason she won't marry again cause no one can compare to her dad, well thats why Alistair can't marry anyone) lmao

This is a thought that's struck me as well, although it wasn't the Joining that gave me the thought, but rather that the broodmothers actually give a good reason why you might not particularly want women on the front lines when fighting Darkspawn - after all, if they get dragged off, they may end up birthing more than they slew as a soldier.

On the other hand, you'd want to make sure your women could fight so they don't just get helplessly dragged off...

It's not the tainted blood that turns you into a broodmother - nor is it a long process. Transformation into a broodmother takes a few days - and involves things some of you may not wish to know. Not that we have all the fine details.

Afaik, female wardens will become ghouls, just like the male ones do. Unless, of course, they are caught in the deep roads instead of dying - and forcibly transformed by the 'usual' method. Although some of the information we get does seem to indicate they become broodmothers (the Codex entry), other information seems to contradict it (Hespith's chant).

Edit: this is why my female wardens ain't going to Orzammar if or when they hear the calling. Slit wrists in a nice warm bath for us.

It says they feed and corrupt them. I'm guessing its a special kind to cause a mutation.

Eww I hope that corruption isn't what I think it is; and I thought the men were simply driven insane.

"When exposed to the darkspawn taint, men are driven mad and eventually die. Women, however, undergo great pain and gross mutations that cause most of them to perish. Those that survive, however, become the grotesque broodmothers. These giant, twisted behemoths birth many darkspawn at a time; a single broodmother can create thousands of darkspawn over the course of her lifetime." --Codex Entry: Broodmother

Yeah, that's why I said all the information doesn't agree.

Ruck is turning into a ghoul. Tamlen did turn into one.

And Hespith's chant says:

"First day, they come and catch everyone.
Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat.
Third day, the men are all gnawed on again.
Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate.
Fifth day, they return and it's another girl's turn.
Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams.
Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew.
Eighth day, we hated as she is violated.

Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin.
Now she does feast, as she's become the beast."

Other random bits you pick up here and there make it even more difficult to piece together. Maybe the codex is right, but I think the jury may still be out on that one. Of course, I haven't read the books yet, so there may be more information in those.

Oh, and this is nice too:

What the blight does not destroy, it corrupts
--From Codex Entry: Ghoul

Living creatures who contract the Taint from any Darkspawn normally die from the corruption. However, those ill-fated to survive become something twisted: Ghouls, or tainted humanoid creatures with a blotchy look and a sickly tone to their skin.

The term ghoul is actually derived from the behavior and mannerisms associated with people who have become corrupted. It was first observed in captives (humans, elves, and dwarves kept as a source of food) of Darkspawn. The constant, slow exposure to the Taint drove these unfortunate souls to turn on their fellow captives, cannibalizing them whilst in the grips of maddening pain and the will of the Archdemon.

Once infected, a ghoul will seek out the Darkspawn. Human ghouls are often used as craftsmen by the Darkspawn (who are not known for the kind of skill required for smithing), but even the healthiest human will die within a few months of having turned.

Only the Grey Wardens have been able to survive the taint by undergoing the joining, but it is revealed later on this is only a temporary escape as with progression of age the taint will spread and either kill or reduce them to Ghouls. The latter in Grey Warden tradition does not happen as "when they begin to hear the call again" from the taint wardens travels to the deep roads to seek out a honorable death.
_____________

And the wiki lists 3 notable ghouls. Ruck. Tamlen. Hespith. So it seems Hespith is 'only' a ghoul and not on her way to broodmother - until they catch her and ...

That's true, for me it is one of those small nagging feelings I sometimes get when playing the game. So I hope it does get straightened out somewhere else.

Edit: >_< No, no they are only going to feed her the dead flesh of the tainted people.  That's what I want to believe.

But you said you wanted it to be straightened out, lol. Like I've said elsewhere. All my female grey wardens are gonna take a nice hot bath when 'their time has come' - and quietly slit their wrists.

All my female wardens have the poison making skill and/or are good friends with Zevran who has knowledge of poisons as well. They wont slit their wrists, they'll just have a glass of wine with their friends, then go to sleep and never wake up.

Well, mine will sort of do the same.

If Avernus/whoever can't come up with a way to prolong/cure the taint-induced death, they'll ask their beloved Zevran to give them something that will take a while. Then they'll go into the Deep Roads, visit mayhem and death upon any darkspawn they can find until the slow working poison ends them.

Wow this is almost a depressin thread for female wardens lmao... You either kill the archdemon n get the pain n agony over with or you face the possibility of possibly becoming a broodmother (shudders n ewwwww) unless someone finds a cure lol... Not a very good future for a female

Edit: Or you make a deal with the darkspawn n say I'll give you Anora Posted Image if you don't turn me into a broodmother... Better idea or hey how about Goldanna lmao

My female wardens are planning on poison too if they can't find some sort of cure. Or finding some nice desperate surface battle situations. No way are they risking NOT dying in the Deep Roads once they start hearing the call.

I don`t think that all female wardens become brood-mothers anymore than regular darkspawn can turn into archdemon. I think there is a process, a highly particular one, if not highly advanced. It`s kind of like saying everyone who goes to University ends up wise. :D

That said, as a female warden when it comes to be my time, I am with some of the above wise posters and having my dear friend Zev`s training in poisons come in handy. It isn`t often that one can choose positive circumstances for their own deaths, and that would be a welcome change for a warden whose existence as one has been about doing what it takes when it is needed.

My this is depressing breakfast fare lol I would avoid the deep roads if it was *only* to go for the Calling. I have no fear of being a broodmother naturally, but that doesn`t mean I trust any darkspawn to simply slaughter me on sight either. :) And I can honestly say that I can`t believe I just said that sentence. lol
