Part of activating Leliana's personal quest is a random encounter with some assassins - you'll end up in a sort of mountain pass next to a river, where you have to fight a Qunari mercenary with a wolf and a few archers and what not. The first few times I got that fight (my first playthough as well) it was quite tough and I kept dying lol. It took me a few tries to get it and win, and then find out that its part of Lel's personal quest.

Yes, and she has to be in the party to trigger it.

There was also a bug where if you got her too high before triggering the quest it didn't ever trigger, I don't think. But that was patched.

Huh. I *never* got that random encounter. Perhaps I had her approval too high too early in the game?

At what point in the game can you activate Leliana's personal quest? In my first playthrough, I had her at 100 percent approval, she loved me, but I never was able to activate the romance sequences, nor did I ever get her personal quest. Quill74Pen

You should be able to get it soon after Lothering, or after whatever you do next. Just keep talking to her - especially about why she came to Ferelden - her mother - being a bard - are bards spies. Of course, she will only reveal certain things once you get her to like you a bit - but not a lot, I don't know the exact 'score' you need.

You need to get her to (a) reveal that she was a spy and (B) lie about why she came to Ferelden. When you get that far, leave camp. Next time you return, she'll reveal that she lied and tell you the real reason she came.

If you then travel with Leliana in your party, you'll get the random event that will give you her personal quest.

Edit: Look here if you want more details and the scores you need, but there will be spoilers, so be warned:

Hey, cool. And don't worry about spoilers — I've completed the game once, and will do so again at some point.

Heh. Seems like there's a lot of tricky dialogue options and whatnot in order to trigger rather simple personal sidequests for one's companions.

Oh please, I found Morrigan a lot easier to bed than Leliana.

Oh, yes. Especially Leliana and Sten, I think. The others are simply a matter of getting them to like you a certain amount, rather than having to make particular choices in conversation. Or so it seems to me.

The only problem with Oghren's is that if you follow the advice of leaving Orzammar until last, he's not really in your party long enough. That's why I go to Orzammar fairly early - and do the quests up until I get Oghren. Then I leave and do other things, and finish Orzammar last.

I make it a point to do all the things that will get me companions as early as possible. This gives me the most time to do personal quests, the most variety in companion choice, the best chance to build them up, and allows me the most dialogue variety and so forth as I can swap them around.
