Strange Outrage..? (Mass Effect 2's Story)

I can look past all of that just as I completely looked past Mass Effects downsides because Mass Effect 1's story was fantastic. I have never felt so in-grossed by and entertainment product, I really felt like I was on a epic adventure of discovery while chasing an unknown threat! I was on the edge of my seat! Mass Effect 2 has that for a few select missions and the suicide mission which accounts for what, 3 hours of a 30+ experience? The rest of it feels like a massive bunch of side quests (very well done side quests I mind you!) This was the 'dark second act' we should of been exploring the depths of the terminus systems discovering the dark and gritty side of the Mass Effect universe (in a similar way we were discovering the council space). In Mass Effect 1 you seem to get the opinion Shep has never been in the Terminus Systems and would never want to and it's made out to be such a villainous place. It just seems like its taken so lightly that he spends most of his mission there.
I knew going into Mass Effect 2 it might be like this with the whole premise being 'recruit your squad' but I assumed it would be a bit more like Dragon Age where each mission felt like and epic adventure in itself (much like Mass Effect.) I cannot deny that all the new characters are great and their stories very interesting but I thought that the larger team for this type of game did not work because it made their individual missions a lot shorter and feel like glorified side quests.
I was hoping for loyalty system more like Dragon Age to. Cut all of the 'loyalty' missions out and replace with more epic discovery and adventuring quest where Shep can be fighting for information and knowledge about the collectors and reapers and trying to figure out if their is a connection. Your squadies loyalty would then be based on how you treat them during convo and their opinions of your actions.
I'm trying to tell myself that I'm not disapointed because I haven't looked forward to an game like this... ever. But fankly I am a bit, maybe it could never live up to the high standards? I think it could because there are plenty of moments where I see why I loved the original so much but I guess there wasn't enough? I just want to get this off my chest if anything.
Anyone else agree? Disagree? Think I am a giant 'douche' (not that I have a clue what tha means coming from the UK lol.) But yeah seriously, what do people think?

Pretty much a bunch of half-wit D&D types who think anything even remotely close to being an RPG needs to have all aspects of gameplay decided by arbitrary stats, and have cumbersome and boring inventory systems.
The rest of us enjoy the game, very much so. I'm on my 4th playthrough already .

Yes, it's a good game, and I don't regret the purchase, but by BioWare's past standards, it falls short.

*edit* Sorry, I misread your post. The above text was actually regarding ME2. Well... yeah. I guess I don't agree with you as much as I thought.
A computer game will never be as much of an RPG as the good old PnP-RPGs, which, provided you have a good dungeon master, have limitless possibilities. When it comes to computer games, you always work within the confines of the developers.

As you ask: Yes, very much. I've posted something to that effect myself, but it bears repeating.SamN7 wrote...
Makes sense, kind of people who don't think Dragon Age is enough of a real RPG lol. Anyone agree with my opinion of the story though?

Same, I do not regret my purchase at all, I stayed up til 4 in the morn last night because I got to the suicide mission and couldn't turn the game off! Sadly when it finished it kind of made the game feel short (in the sense that only the last bit felt like pure shinny ME1 awesomeness!)bjdbwea wrote...
I agree with you, OP. I could live with the dumbing down of gameplay if the story was "there". Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to part 1. Attention spans of people seem to get shorter and shorter, and thinking seems to be out, so maybe that's why they like this style of more or less unrelated episodes, but it's not for me.

The beginning sets you up into becoming a Jedi... I mean Spectre.
You then heads off to a couple of planets looking for a way to reach the Starforge... I mean Conduit.
For the majority of the time you do quests that have nothing to do whatsoever with Malak or the Starforge... I mean Saren and the Conduit.
When you finally piece together the Starmap... I mean "clues", you head off into the Unknown Planet, I mean Ilos.
From there, the full picture of the True Sith, I mean Reapers, is complete.
You then enter the Starforge, I mean Conduit, to do battle with Malak, I mean Saren.
And finally, you make a speech about how you're going to stop the True Sith, I mean Reapers, who are still out there beyond the edges of the galaxy.
I'm pretty sure I "immersed" myself in ME1's story 5 years before it came out.

That's what I'm assuming to, and because it's the final in the trilogy they're really gunna let the story change by your actions. I do have faith, honest! I don't think becuase it's the middle game is an excuse, Empire Strikes Back didn't feel like a side story (my favourite one), The Two Towers didn't, I could go on.Birko19 wrote...
Well it does not live up to part one's story because it's the middle game, it did not have a real ending as we speak and it felt like a side story, I think the final one we will get back to the main plot and end it with a big bang, I have faith in BioWare.

I'm not saying it's an excuse, but this could be a major reason why the story is like this, also keep in mind that carrying over your save file opens up a huge can of worms to deal with, which is why I suspect some of your major choices did not play a major role in this one and instead, will most likely be major roles in the 3rd one.
I do suspect that the choices from this game will play less impact on the third game, for example whoever died from the mission will not be seen in the third game (Kind of similar to the Ashley/Kaiden/Wrex thing), and so on.

True say. Yeah I wasn't overly bothered about the choice carry over, I wasn't expecting anything big because they've got to make another game and if they mades consiquences to drastic Bioware would end up having to make about 7 different games for ME3 haha. I don't think they should of hyped the character transfer thing as much though, I think a lot of people were disapointed. I just found the story a bit disapointing.Birko19 wrote...

Actually, the "anger" (more like unwarranted QQ) is coming from a rather small group of very vocal rpg "purists"(when compared to the amount of people who prefer ME2 to the first game).

This. Glad to see I'm not the only ones who sees that.
I'm on my third playthrough myself.
