People just don't like Ashley cause she doesn't mindlessly follow everything you say. Because you're Shepard and Shepard is always right. I love characters like Ashley, Miranda, and Morrigan because they speak their minds. They have faults and they don't let their barriers down unless you really work at it.

This is what partially what drove me nuts about Tali. Oh your working for Cerebus? Nevermind what he's done to the quarians, you're Shepard. Oh you've now allied yourself with the geth? They did drive us from our homeland and kill my father, but you're Shepard so that's okay. People seem to hate any character that suddenly takes a stand against your PC and gives you a real ultimatum. Personally, I welcome that.

Plus the fact that Ashley is a strong independent woman, and I didn't feel like I had to save her every five seconds. Damsels in distress annoy me to death.

Tali and Garrus realize that the real threat is the reapers and wont let petty things like who's funding Shepard's mission get in their way of helping him/her.

It's also not as simple as this either.  You really can't reduce any of their characters to this.  Each of them had their personal motivations for joining or not joining and those motivations are very layered and believable because the writers are good.

I'm still curious how Ashley came free, while everyone else was taken away. I know I saw her being frozen too. Couldn't ask her that question either of course...

Don't think too much about it...it'll mind rape you.

Huh?  Most of the people didn't get taken away.  There were dozens of frozen people still lying around when you drove the Collectors away.  It just happened to conveniently wear off right at the end of the fight.

I suppose so.

That sounds reasonable. And to someone above, I'm not trolling. I used to be an enormous ashley fan.

Supporting this.

I actually quite liked the scene on Horizon...it was impressive to have someone call you out on working with some terrible people.

And I like that she's religious, in science fiction the aliens are spouting off their made-up spiritual mumbo-jumbo all the time, but it's much rarer for an SF human character to openly talk about God.

I want her to return in ME3 for the drama with Miranda!

I think the paralysis must not last very long. So when the Collector ship started getting ready to leave and all those small stinging insects went back aboard, people began waking up not long after.

Or it may just be that, wearing her excellent body armor...

...Ash received fewer stings and so was able to recover more quickly.

I'd love to see her interact with Miranda. Just in general. They are very different personality wise. Miranda is very cool-headed, considers everything she says and does very carefully and can be downright icy and condescending. Ash is a hot-head, sometimes blows up without thinking. She's not at all mysterious and she's downright blunt, while Miranda seems to have such...pretty...ways of telling you you're an idiot. I don't think they would get along regardless of romantic entanglements.

I think Jack would like Ashley though...eventually.

Some relationships could be extremely interesting, im hoping for alot more interaction between squadmates next time around, it would be great to have them moving around the normandy abit, going to the mess and other places, interacting with each other rather than staying stationary all the time.

Those are the two women LEAST likely to succumb to a ridiculous catfight over Shepard.  10 to 1 both of them simply tell him  to shove off.

It's like Ash said in ME1.  "We're not married Shepard.  You wanna mess with her?  BE MY GUEST."

In fact the very idea that any of the female romantic interests would get into a catfight is just....well it's....ugh....that's really tacky and cliche.  No self respecting woman fights over a man.  They confront HIM and make him choose - just like in ME1.

Liara and Ash didn't do the whole "he's my man!  Stay away from  him!" thing.  They both did the mature and smart thing and were like "Shepard.  You got some explaining and choosing to do.  RIGHT NOW."

It's not petty at all. If a terrorist group was funding a mission to save everyone and my close friend asked me to join up with them, I'd say no. Especially if said group had attempted to go after my people. Not to mention my friend has been dead for two years with no explanation whatsoever besides, I'm Shepard, come save the galaxy with me! It'll be just like old times. How do I know he's not a clone that's been indoctrinated by the terrorist group. People just aren't brought back to life. They have a right to be upset. This is more than just about trust. I don't want to go off to save the galaxy with a guy who might possibly be crazy. Some people gave Cerebus that base at the end. How do we know Cerebus won't take it and use it to control the rest of the galaxy after the Reapers were dealt with? Then whose right in having trust issues?

Ashley and Kaidan have a strong enough moral code to be willing to turn away because they want to do things the right way. I admire them for that, despite the fact that I had to go another way. More than the people who just follow along, without asking too many questions. Garrus seems like a Cerebus type, get things done, no rules, so I understand that. I don't get Tali at all, though. I'm working with Cerebus and Geth who have attributed to pain and suffering for the Quarians. She does have that confrontation with Legion (which was easily dealt with), but when I took her with on Legion's quest, she had no protest to me saving a good portion of their race. I mean, she never stopped talking about her people in the first game, I'd think she'd care a little more about the guys I'm working with.

Ashley is one of my favorite characters. Sure she might be racist, but I like having the option in Mass Effect 1 to turn her views into more alien friendly. Also not to mention she is hot. I hope this sort of thing is the same in Mass Effect 3.

Here's my support for Ash. Once I gave her a chance, she made playing male Shepard much more enjoyable. I played through romancing Liara as a MShep, but it was just a repeat of the FShep i put w/ Liara. Anyway, Ashley is a deeply passionate, intelligent, loyal, dedicated person. She has reservations about things she has not had much experience with, such as interactions with aliens, and she's all about getting the job done, which some attribute to as high renegade (she's not that renegade, actually). These are all admirable traits, and she deserves to be celebrated as a well-written character just like so many others Bioware has made.
