The Reapers all seem to have appearances similar to either arthropods in general, or cuttlefish/insects in ways. Would make sense in some ways, given the last big cultural evolution seemed to have been insectoids, (Collectors), as well as past generations as well, depending on how many times the Keepers have been used. As we possibly know how they reproduce now, they could take on the traits of the materials used. Alternatively, if the ships we see are shells, with the core being similar to what appears in ME2, then there could be technical reasons why they picked that form.

That and they kinda look like Lovecraftian mythos creatures with the cephalopod form.

I do wonder if the Reapers will follow the theme of single big bad being near unstoppable, then once more show up, you can start picking them off with greater ease. Stargate did this with motherships, both in the original arcs, and eventually with the Ori.

I wonder what Reapers looked like before the squids. Hmm I wonder what a turian Reaper would look like. No, what I really really want to know is, what the species squid-Reapers are based on look like.

Ouch, my head hurts.

We don't have to assume that you need sapients or bipids for making Reapers. ME2 has mentioned at times that certain species work for making Reapers, like humans, others don't, such as the Collectors and most other sapients around. The genetic diversity of humans is touched on several times, by Mordin and others, so this may be what is required.
Should a suitable species have been around in previous harvests, then I can't see the Reapers being picky about whether or not they were a dominatnt space faring race, or just around but in contact with those that were space faring.

In the ME wiki, the Reaper page theories how many Reapers there might be:assuming a 50000 year gap, one Reaper made per harvest, and the theorised age of the universe. Can't seem to find it on the wiki atm, so may have been moved or deleted, but the number was around 700.

Edit and additions: Makes me understand the convo Ash has when she says she feels helpless against such Dreadnaughts. Yes bug bites can eventually kill, but said bug bites need to be effective enough to at least do something in the first place.

RE: Sapient species and the Reapers

My own theory is that whilst the Reapers could harvest non-sapient life, they choose not to because they want 'The Best'.

I think they wait to see if a species is stong enough, adaptable enough, and has a strong enough will to survive before they harvest it. Waiting until they reach a space faring level and seeing how they progress would be a good way of seeing who it 'suitable for Club Reaper'.

Anywho, that is a crap load of Reapers. "We have come for your women. Japanese women in particular have already been preped for our arrival."

EDIT: Also, thought I'd add this to the threads collection of bizzare emotes :D

Wanted to comment on Dragon Age and the Reaper question that has already been debated to death.

Dragon Age is amazing.

The Reapers..........Maybe there are more than 100.

I took a train of thought and started following it. Suppose Harbinger (The Reaper General, we assume) and Sovereign (The Reaper Sentinel) were both made from nigh unstoppable species such as Turians or Krogan or Asari or Salarians.

While it is POSSIBLE that the entire Reaper Armada is made out of Turian/Krogan/Asari/Salarian type species, How LIKELY is it? There is evidence that some very WEAK (From a Colonial and Military standpoint) races HAD to be harvested.

There are so many things we do not know about the Reapers.

Big Question 1- How many Reapers are created every cycle?

Big Question 2- How many cycles have there been?

Big Question 3- How do they remain in Dark Space for 50k years?

Big Question 4- Do they harvest every 50k years, Did they let a civilization go till the 100k point and get 3 or 4 Reapers out of them? How firm a deadline is 50k years?

Big Question 5- Are they a Hive Mind? Can they think on their own or is it similar to Harbinger's control over the Collectors?

So many things need to be answered before you can really say if we can beat them or not.

Quick question, how can you get Ash and Shep to dance together, as per the post by BECC4? I imagine it must be in Flux in ME1, though I haven't seen the option for anyone else but Shep to dance. Ash always says she would love to show me her moves, but she is on duty. Oh, and no matter how good my Shep is, he really, really needs dancing lessons. After he saves the galaxy in ME3, he will need it for all those formal functions.

go out to the middle of the dance floor with Ashley in your squad and select her, a little scene will play with Ash dancing and Shepard doing the white guy shuffle.

Also, Ashaman X, Wheel of Time fan?

Yeah, I am a big Wheel of Time fan, have been so the last 11 years now. Come to think of it, Ash reminds me a bit of Nyneave, but not nearly so snarky, and of course Ash quotes poetry. Ash > Nynaeve.

I must check out Flux again next time I play ME1, I would like to see this scene with Shep and Ash dancing. I played ME1 through really slowly the 2nd and cannon time, but it seems I still missed small things like this. Ah well, more reason to go back the ME1 soon.

Ok, slightly off topic, but here's a thought: how much better would Ash look if she was modelled in CryEngine instead of Unreal Engine? In my opinion, CryEngine does facial and body animations that much better than UE 3 does. I want to see Ash in more glory in ME3, I just hope the engine can do the job in ME3. ME2 was def a step up from 1, but it still has issues here and there.

True, but the problem I find with the CryEngine is that it always encourages the level designers to make everything too visually 'busy', if you see what I mean. Add to that, it probably puts a greater strain on the computer/xbox

Hey guys.

Playing Dragon Age and just had a thought.

For better squad interaction in ME3, How about before and after key battles, Have the crew share a meal?

It might have lead to better relations with Jack and Miranda.

Possible, possible. I would prefer they just put the banter back into the game - the characters seem so...unaware of each other for the most part.

It just seems like a cool idea.

The whole crew sit down around this really long table and discuss events of the previous mission, hopes, dreams, fears, problems, etc etc while having breakfast/lunch/dinner.
