Hey. I just wanted to pop in and let you all know about an epiphany I just had:
I like Ash.
Let me explain: I was sitting here, eating my peanut butter toast and reflecting on my Virmire decision (something I occasionally do) and recalling my recent decision to finally do a Kaidan romance playthrough of ME1, just so that I could see what would happen when I cheated on his ass with Garrus.
For that playthrough, I let Kaidan live...but I also created a save right before the Virmire decision. And when I'd beaten the game, I promptly reload and played the ending saving Ashley. I really just couldn't finish a game without saving Ashely: for me, that's the canon ending.
For a long time I'd always saved Ashley at Virmire for two reasons: 1), First and foremost she has a family that loves her and even depends on her to some degree. I feel like a heartless **** if I let her die. 2), I felt like she was just the lesser of two borings, and nuking Kaidan gave me a curious pleasure.
Just now I realized that it's grown to be more than that: I like Ashley. I like her as a character. I like that she isn't the perfect woman (not knocking on Miranda here, just using the phrase in general). She has some serious character flaws that make her compelling. I used to be very judgmental of both her faith and her racism, but now I feel like it just makes her deeper. She has good reasons to believe what she believes, and it gives her room for growth.
A lot of people are pissed at Ashley/Kaidan's responses to you on Horizon. I can pretty solidly say that it was that appearance that finally opened my eyes to the awesome character that she is:
I love that she took a stand on Horizon: she learned that you were working for the enemy, and no matter your reasons that is not ok with her. Ashley is a fiery, strong-willed personality. To just lay down and take everything you say at face-value would have been out of character for her. Any jackass can just believe what Shepard says; it takes real stones to defend what you believe. She does so.
I've heard people complain, asking why Ashley or Kaidan can't trust you like Garrus and Tali do, why she isn't more loyal. Her reaction to me on Horizon convinces me that Ashley is possibly more loyal than the rest: She believes in the person she knew; but now Shepard has taken this total 180 and is now working for the enemy. She's true to the values and morals of the Shepard she knew, and has no way of knowing if he/she's the same person.
Wow....that was longer than I'd intended. Sorry about that.
In case you didn't read all that crap, and totally I don't blame you if you didn't:
SUMMARY: Ashley is totally awesome and compelling, and I'm fully on board with her now. I hope hope hope hope she's a squadmate in ME3, and I hope those of you that romanced her get the epic ending she and Shepard deserve!
