Why cant this be a reality?

If Einea is still around or comes by, and is still trying to force herself to save Ashley on Virmire, tell her I said to try sending Kaidan with the salarians, then rescuing Ashley from the bomb site. I would agree it's too heartbreaking to try to watch as your LI guards the bomb with their dying breath.

I had an epiphany last night concerning the romances from ME1. It consisted of an observation, which led to a realization. That realization was that Kaidan/Ashley both hold Shepard to a set of standards, while Liara loves Shepard unconditionally. Now before you all start getting the wrong ideas, let me explain: What I mean by that is no matter what you do, Liara loves you, not necessarily romantically. On the other hand, (since this is the Ashley thread I'll use her as the next example) Ashley's love is something you have to prove you're worthy for. This goes along the vein of "nothing in life is, or should be, for free" which probably sounds less profound than it is.
I don't know. With Ashley I just never felt like I was being handed anything, her romance was something both of us worked for, so it felt more substantive than the more or less free cuddles of the Liara romance (oversimplification, but aside from getting past her awkwardness, the Liara romance seemed way too 'destined' for me to be comfortable with).
What is it Ashley says? I remember it was something like: "All my life I've had to fight for what I wanted. I just never felt like I was good enough. Now I feel good enough."

*yawns and waves* Good morning!
Yes, I had to do it with Ashley at the bomb site. I had learned from leaving Ash with the bomb that it was absolutely heartwrenching to leave the person there behind. I just wanted to throw a rope or SOMETHING seeing the Normandy fly by. It's still sad to see the anguish on Ashley's face for leaving him behind, walk past his station without him there, and talk to Ashley about it. I'll get through it, but it will take some mental strengthening first. I am a big softie.

That's what I had to do when I was playing as female Shepard (the badass, "asari-hating" Cara) and decided I was going to save Kaidan. The poor guy dies so much in my house I wanted to give him a break for a change, but I knew there was no way I would be able to live with myself if I let Ashley guard the bomb. It was hard enough as it was.

Awww *hugs*. I completely understand. BW did a great job making it emotionally engaging when you leave one behind, that's for sure.

ya i cant say i have ever saved Kaidan, but that might be because my Fiances name is Ashley and that would just feel wrong to lleave her behind lolEinea wrote...

HI what all we talking about?
Ah, Z was giving me support to push through leaving Kaidan behind on Virmire. I've done it and saved the game afterwards, but I can't muster the courage yet to face the sad reaction from Ash.I'm glad to have her, but it's still sad. This is the first time I've chosen to keep Ashley, and I never thought I'd manage to even make that decision, let alone save it. But I will keep at it; the payoff of having my Shep's sister around should make it worthwhile. I doubt I could do it again, though, unless I decide to try out a maleShep sometime.

While it's nice to have that 'unconditional' love, I prefer that in a friend more than a lover.
Einea wrote...
I don't want someone devoted to me regardless of my actions; they should love me because of my decisions and hold me accountable when I lose my way. That shows that they are really there for you, and not just in it to have someone. It might hurt when the chips are down, but the pay off for the great times would be so much more.

Frankly, I think friendship of that sort is
undervalued in RPG's, where the overarching focus seems to be on
romance, and quite possibly undervalued in the world at large.

Yes, I agree that it is undervalued for the most part. I really can't stand it when someone attempts to write such a friendship and turns it into something closer to blindly following. There is a difference, slight as it might be. Unconditional would be the classic joke about your true friends helping you bury the body. When you see friendships written with the blind following aspects, your friend in that case would disregard their own morals and approve of the murder.
Again, small differences, but it makes a huge difference. When those friendships are written correctly, it does wonders for my engagement in the game. Otherwise it's just laughable and fake to have someone who is basically a groupie rather than a friend.
Lord Zeuss wrote...
I think probably the reason why they are undervalued (now I'm correcting myself, but such is human) is that few people really understand them. For the most part, I don't think I could adequately explain what makes a friendship based on unconditional love work. So based on that inherent lack of understanding, it is very hard to pin down exactly what such a friendship is, and as a result it is either mismanaged or not even attempted. Bioware Appreciation: +5
