I feel the same way about Jacob too; I like him, but he's low on the ladder for memorable characters along with Kaidan for me. What it comes down to really is how each character affects us emotionally, which is what we look for in fictional stories. Like Socrates (or some other Greek philosopher) said, tragedy is popular because it gives the audience a sense of catharsis---cleansing ourselves emotionally---which Jacob and Kaidan lack in a way for me. But Kaidan is somewhat of a running joke between me and a friend so he has that going for him, I guess.

I definitely got that feeling during the conversation, Ash sounded just disgusted with Terra Firma's manipulation of her own grandfather to further their political goals. Or at least her facial animations made it seem like she was disgusted.
Oh, how I love that conversation. I take Ashley with me whenever I decide to complete that particular quest, because watching her tear the guy a new one and her telling him to 'shut your pie hole!' is one of the best parts of the game.

True, true. Most of the characters have outright tragedies in their past. About the only one who doesn't is Ashley, although I suppose you could call the lost of her squad on Eden Prime one.yeoldearche wrote...

Though what I do like in ME 2 is that my paragon shep turns back outcomes into wins.

Ashley is a strong character. She seems like a real character. She's a strong woman who fights for what she believes in and is loyal to the core for Shepard. I admit the Horizon meeting was a bit strange but I honestly think that the way that Bioware handles the Horizon meeting for both Kaidan and Ashley was NOT done well at all. It's like they said, okay, you've got your 2 minutes of screen time...now it's time to move on back to all of our other characters. Hopefully both Kaidan and Ashley get better parts in ME3 - depending on which one you saved on Virmire, of course. It would be great to have a specific DLC where our Shepard gets to go on a mission with either Ashley/Kaidan, after he's destroyed the Collectors, and they make their peace with each other. It would bring a better closure to the characters until ME3.

I disagree. Given the circumstances of the meeting, the time apart, the time 'dead', I don't think real people would have been able to do much better then and there.

Is this true even if you romance Jacob? (Has anyone done it?) I can sorta see him 'manning up' and not talking
about his feelings in most cases, but sharing it with someone he cares
deeply about. (And besides, lots of ME2 characters get lots more
dialogue/story in their romances.)
This is a very good point, almost forgot about that. I haven't romanced him
(just started my first female Shepard playthrough recently) and decided
to stay friends with him in favor of Garrus. I have heard that Jacob's
romance progression feels more like a passionate fling, similar to
Miranda's. I will eventually get around to romancing every character,
just to satisfy my curiosity though.

Oh definitely, the added dialogue is great so I always bring her no matter what character.
Unless she... died on Virmire when I decided to romance Kaidan all the way through. I was disappointed. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/sad.png[/smilie]

Ashley does have tragedy, but it's less exaggerated and more human to me. Raised knowing the result of her grandfather's actions, how he was unjustly treated after the war, and her father never being promoted past serviceman third class, and herself being held back by being given crap tours and assignments, yet she perseveres in spite of it all and still maintains a fierce loyalty to the Alliance (even if she feels like they don't act like a proper government at times).
She wasn't tortured her entire childhood, hasn't lost her entire family in a raid, but she's had a relatively healthy and functional life that only lends to her plausible character. She's just as compelling that way, imo. Even for a tragedy-sadist like me. I just wish her voice actress didn't quote the poetry in a bored monotone voice, otherwise I have no problem with Ashley in any other significant way.

I hope there's some Ash specific DLC as well - and I definitely want Ash to be a squaddie in ME3.
After the brief Horizon scene and the follow up email - Bioware needs to send us Ash fans some love! More content would make this Ash fan happy

Not very thrilled with the way they handled Ash in ME2. Could have / should have (imho) given her more to do.
Even if it was just hangin at the citadel for you to talk to or give missions to you. Something. I don't feel Ash's time
in ME2 was a good introduction to people who never played ME1, or re-introduction to people who hadn't played in
2 years.
I don't think bioware would handle bringing them back together (make peace) with DLC. Maybe a big expansion. That would be nice.
I support and miss Ashley

Well, give it ago mate. The worse case scenario is your first go isn't very good. You can work on it. Refine it. Or just try out stuff and see what works before giving another story ago.

Well...true. If you've just come into Mass Effect 2, it's not a good way to start.
I suppose that is a flaw of the Bioware model of game making - if you miss the first 'episode' of a series, its hard to catch up. Actually.. what could have been done was a brief re-cap video on some of the key characters, if you were starting a new Shepard.

K, so it always bugged me that my userbars were badly compressed when I uploaded them to my album on the social site, so I finally uploaded them to my personal Photobucket, the links will be nice and sharp here:

Indeedie. I'm tempted to try and replay ME 1 again, but the gameplay is worse than I remembered, heh. Might just cheat and watch the YouTube videos.

If your more interested in the story and not the shooting. You could lower the difficulty to casual.
Things die easy enough, and you can get on to the important things, like Ashley.

Actually, its a lot more fun(cant believe im saying that) Because you have to be tactical with the use of powers.
It forces me to keep Liara with me though. Im doing a Hardcore run through right now, which is a lot harder than ME2 because Health Regens a LOT slower.
But its more fun because you can throw people who have shields.

Great work with those, thanks.
And Doug84, try the casual setting like Liam said and using the console. It made my last run infinitely faster having the geth super gun and super armor for insanity difficulty. And it's amusing to me to see the constant "I WILL DESTROY YOU" and shoot them once and they continue flying until they hit a crate or a wall.
