I had pretty much decided that Ashley had fallen to the wayside and the writers were pushing for the player to accept a new love interest for ME2. I was saddened that I was going probably going to end up romancing someone else, and feeling as though I was betraying her. And then the e-mail came. My feelings went from mixed back to what they were beginning ME2. The scene right before you jump through the relay was equally powerful and made me feel that I was making the right choice. I like Tali, I like Miranda, hell, I even like Jack, but I feel Shepard and Ashley is the way this series is supposed to be.
I would disagree that they were trying to force you towards one of the new LI's and, I'll be honest, of course they weren't thinking of the fans - if they thought of the fans every time they did something, nothing interesting would happen because it would upset someone's fans somewhere.

The only reason I say that they were forcing you into a new romance was the way they ended the cameo on Horizon. She just says good-bye and that she can't follow you. If it weren't for the e-mail afterwards, I would have thought that was the end. She was basically saying "You're on your own now." If it were real life, I think it would be completely reasonable for a guy to move on to a new love interest if your old one said "I know you have been dead for the past two years, I didn't want to live after you were gone, and it's been great seeing you and all, but I don't trust you anymore." Especially the way Shepard finishes the scene with "I've had enough with this colony." The whole scene just seemed really bitter, as if they wanted the player to hate Ashley and find someone new. I am sure she will be back for ME3, but I don't know to what capacity. Shepard has cut ties with Cerberus, so I see no reason why she wouldn't trust him anymore. But who knows...maybe Shepard dies again and the Blue Suns bring him back <_<

Oops, just skimmed over the last few pages. My bad! Finally sitting down to read your whole story now. And I just noticed you changed your signature Doug. You want Jack and Jacob back now too then?
Heh, I figured there was already enough Tali support, so I figured I'd switch banners. As for JAck and JAcob, well, they aren't my favourite characters AT all, but I figure some people like them, and they where LI's for some people, so what the hell.
That's... very reasonable of you! Lol. I just played Jacob's loyalty mission last night, and it still disturbs me how it's presented... but Jacob merely goes from confused to "What a coward, nothing I didn't already know, but he's gonna pay so let's keep shooting these mechs down to get to him." Never seeming tortured in the slightest about this.
Well, Jack isn't one of the romances I've tried. I mean, she's well written as a horribly scarred individual, but her childish ****iness makes me think too much of the individuals who I've meet and act like that even without a tortured childhood. And I'm going to be romancing Jack on my renegon Shepard, I figured she made the most sense since he has the colonist and ruthless backgrounds and he's only now toning down his searing hatred for Batarians (and mild disdain towards other aliens) and he finds someone who's as, if not more, tortured than he is. So, they'll be my melodrama couple.
I read all of your story now, and I really enjoyed it! Mostly the prologue with the Normandy under attack and the entire sequence for Ashley's cat-and-mouse hunt with the Batarians. If you'd like I can make some feeback/criticisms in a PM or something.

Yeah, Jacob's not very well expressed in the game, I feel. He was alright in ME: Galaxy, but that was wholy text based. And I believe that scene was meant to be distrubing. Its the whole "Lord of the Flies" thing about a group cut off from society letting the civilized rules break down.
Its just a shame we don't really see him emote about it - even the cool blooded Samara manages a line about how "I have killed the bravest of my daughters, have pity on a broken old warrior and let us go"
Well, Jack isn't one of the romances I've tried. I mean, she's well written as a horribly scarred individual, but her childish ****iness makes me think too much of the individuals who I've meet and act like that even without a tortured childhood.
Thanks, and please do - its the only way I'll learn, heh. I like to think of them as a series of short stories in the same arc, if you will - i.e. what everyone did after the start of ME2. And i have another unconnected shorter story I'm working on right now that I should have up by tomorrow that I think is very different - doesn't feature ashley though, lol.

Is anyone else having trouble going back and replaying ME2? The spark just isn't there for me like it was in ME1. Sure, on a technical level it's miles ahead of its predecessor, but the storyline in ME1 is way more enjoyable. ME2 is 80% recruiting teammates, 5% resource mining, and 15% storyline. And Shepard's squad in ME1 just 'clicked' better than the squad in ME2, I think, even though the ME2 squad benefits from greater attention. I've been trying to work through ME2 as a Renegade after my first playthrough as a Paragon, but I haven't picked the game back up in several days now. And I played ME1 like ten times.

eh, I'll go back through it eventually. I've only played it once myself, and aside from only a few sequences *coughhorizoncough* it was a blast. I was paragon and loyal to Ash my first time through on my "canon" shepard, but my renegade is a true ahole, and I want to cheat at least once to see the repercussions in ME3.
thing is, I cant think of a whole lot of choices in ME2 that would seriously alter the universe in a renegade way. I mean, there were a LOT of crucial choices to be made in ME1. In ME2, the only ones that really come to me are what you do with the geth and the collector base. I suppose Tali's exoneration/exile is a big one as well, but overall there didnt seem to be as many.
there certainly was never a virmire moment, which was my favorite part of ME1. Heres hoping they bring something like that back in ME3. Having everyone survive is nice, but I like a punch in the gut every once in a while.
Oh, I agree that ME2 definitely has a more cinematic feel to it, which I also enjoyed. I just kind of wish they'd put as much thought and attention into ME1's squad as they did ME2's (though that was likely a reaction to people's feelings on how the squadmates were treated in ME1, so...). I also agree that if they could incorporate Dragon Age's excellent character interaction into everything else they've done with ME2 (aside from streamlining the inventory and powers a little too much--I'm glad they did it, but I think they went a little overboard), while bringing back a more satisfying storyline like in ME1, then ME3 will be fantastic.yeoldearche wrote...
Not really, a lot of the recruitment missions are powerful in their own right to me. Purgatory, Archangel (just for the sheer nostalgia factor and seeing my favorite turian in glorious high-resolution for once), and Haestrom to find Tali - these all were extremely well done and the atmosphere gave me gamer's euphoria. After playing through ME1 two more times to import the characters, I rarely got the same feelings I did in ME2. The exploration and grand sense of scale I absolutely loved, but it didn't make up for the tedious driving up 89-degree angles of cliffs on nearly all the planets I could land on.Randy1083 wrote...

That and there were only 6 squad members and they didn't have THAT many lines of dialogue compared to ME2 as a lot of people like to claim. The difference is being able to click on them in specific places to hear two or three idle observations about the place from them. One thing I loved from Dragon Age was the character interaction between party members, which Mass Effect sorely lacks aside from the first game's elevator rides which I enjoyed a lot. :B
One aspect about the game I love is the cinematic feel to it all, which is the main reason I play shooter games, except Mass Effect actually has decent writing so it's just icing on the cake.
My two cents. Also, thank you for the signatures Randy.

I would love this pic as a wallpaper. I feel playing ME2 that I am forcing myself to play where as with ME1 it flowed and time just flew by before you knew it. Do not get me wrong I love both games but ME1 was just more story driven than all the bells and whistles I got with the second.
I hope that bringing Ash back in the third one sparks a renewed interest for me. I play the game for story and choices that make a real difference, shooters you can find anywhere.

yeah, in a lot of ways Ashley WAS ME1 for me. I mean, I always looked forward to talking with and after each mission and watching the relationship progress.
there wasnt really any character that I felt that kind of attachment to in ME2. Mordin was hilarious, yes, and Thane was cool as hell, and I actually liked Jacob a lot, despite what others say.
but when it comes to Tali, Miranda, and Jack, if you dont romance them, you get practically no dialogue. I mean, their dialogue trees just lock and you dont get any farther. simply put, there was no one in ME2 that I was rushing to talk to or get to know. just wasnt the same.
dont get me wrong, its still an awesome game.

That is what I mean if you did not romance them then their dialogue options dried up quickly. It was either sex me or do not talk to me.

Okay Ash fans, I'm making a Shepard/Ash video
What I need is a song for the video, any suggestions?
