BioWare is kind of running out of guaranteed alive returning bodies. My only concern is if she'll return as a squad mate.

I think everyone would like to see them come back, expect possibly the hardcore Renegade  players that kill everyone.

Regardless of your love interest, Liara, and whoever you picked (if you picked one) will be back. They are safe from harm for their return in ME3.

Unless.............you chose a LI in ME2, then proceeded to get them killed during the suicide mission, in which case, your LI either reverts back to the ME1 one, or Kelly, or none. In which case, your storyline is safe for ME3.

I honestly think those two characters (Liara and LI) are the only guarantees to be back as a major player in ME3. Anyone else, a cameo or missing completely.

This is a good point, In Mass Effect 3, you are guaranteed to have Liara and either Kaidan or Ashley, everyone else is optional.

This does seem to imply that none of those characters are likely to recieve a key role, as they may already be killed, whereas there is always going to be a guaranteed role for Liara to fill, and Kaidan/Ashley to fill.

I suppose in way this is good news for us

 well, like I said, for those folks that chose Tali as a LI, I am pretty confident that they will have her in ME3.  You kind of have to look at it like this:

• there is a finite number of slots for squad members
• One slot for Liara
• I am confident that one slot will be reserved for LI
• LI role has to be broad enough that ANY character can fill it

So this means, they will write it so you could plug in Ashley/Kaidan, Miranda, Jacob, Thane, Garrus, Jack, Tali into the LI role.  What you say, you didn't mention Liara.  Yeah because Liara has her own spot as they have obviously made her a critical part of the overall story, regardless of romance.  So if she is your LI, she plays dual roles.
Of the above mentioned characters, only your LI and Liara will be available as a squad member...of course...THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION.
Just thought I would clarify.

Yeah, I read ya.  I totally understand what you are saying, and I agree.  Sorry I didn't come across that way.  Yes, Liara and Ash/Kaidan are the only ones I think that are locked into ME3.

I'm inclined to believe Tali will have something to do with the Fleet helping out Shepard in the final battle (complete theory, no proof) based on the letter Shepard got when he recruited Tali.

Oh, I think you are correct in assuming this.  Regardless if she is a LI or not, she can be written into that story arc and still not appear in ME3.  It has to be that way because she can perish during the suicide mission.  I'm just saying that if she is a LI, and she survived during your ME2 game, then she will occupy your LI slot for ME3.  If that is the case, then Ash/Kaidan will appear as a squad slot, and not the LI slot.  They are alive no matter what you did in ME2.

Remember, Liara is the only character that cannot be killed through either game.  The Ash/Kaidan combo cannot be killed in either game (yes one of them can die, but that guarantees the other to live and show up in ME2).  These characters are "safe" for ME3 and will undoubtedly be there.
