I'm new to ME - Having played DA:O a few times, and seen that ME 2 was coming, I figured I would playthrough ME 1 first and get a sense of the history and backstory.  Now I find I can even do a character import, so am feeling like this was a good plan already, as long as I don't mess up my char.

Trouble is, in RPGs, I generally like to spend time and effort on character build and team set-up to min-max and get the most out of the mechanics.  So I'm not going to rush ME1 playthrough(s) just to get on to ME 2.

What are the good resources on t'intaweb to find stats/talent discussions, relative gear/wep upgrade comparisons, squad usage, and so forth, if any?  Had a look on these forums and couldn't find anything really useful, but I'm aware these are new, and there were previous forums that might've been better on this.

Any helpful links greatly appreciated

As for gear, get spectre weapons and colossus armor asap. Until then just use whatever you can find that has the best stats. Pretty much those two types are miles ahead of any other choices in the game. On upgrades, use whatever upgrades you like for your play style.

I second the colossus armor and spectre gear. Spectre requires the rich achievement which is IIRC 1000000 credits to unlock. You have to buy a license to get access to the colossus armor on your ship.

The mass effect wiki has a decent breakdown of the skills of each class and what each rank adds.

Last bit, for ME1 you need someone in your group to have high decryption and electronics skill, otherwise you won't be able to unlock crates or hack terminals.

For upgrades I recommend a medical interface and another exoskeleton of your choice for armor, and for weapons you generally need two Heat Dampners + ammo of your choice (Inferno is very useful), except for the Sniper Rifle and Shotgun. Place Scram Rails on those, plus Explosive Ammo.

Also the skill system is completly diffrent in ME2 from ME1 so dont worry to much about how your importing character has progressed.

Now before you go looking to min/max in ME1 you should note that levels/talent points don't carry over into ME2, neither does equipment (so I've heard). There are certain achievments that give bonuses but I'm not sure which.

Now that disclaimer aside you can check the old forums at meforums.bioware.com where you can still read the old threads there might be some ideas there, personally I've never felt overly concerned about stats as I've always had more talent points than I need (regardless of class though my leveling style is somewhat Spartan).

Thanks for all the replies.

A couple of more specific questions, as I couldn't find them on the old forums (sucky search function ftl):

Is there anywhere that compares the relative value of weapon upgrade mods (ammo and utility slot) and armour upgrades?

To unlock biotic and tech achievements, you need to "cast" the abilities a certain number of times - does that need to be a PC, or can it be an NPC squad member?

It has to be done by your PC.

Unfortunately no, you can compare equipment you're about to buy with what you already have, and you have the side by side comparison when equipping + colour coding, but there isn't anything like that for mods.

TY again for the replies.

@DPSSOC - ty, but I meant threads/posts discussing relative values, like DpS mechanics and such

There's no need for such a screen, the upgrades have descriptions that say exactly what they do (and what they do is generally plainly obvious due to the name, except for the Kinetic Coils).

Take your time with ME1. Alot of the good armours can be found by simply searching the galaxy on side quests, you said you like to max out your characters and exploration will help you rank up fast.the higher your rank the more likley you are to find good gear( i found the good stuff starts rollin in at lvl30).Look out for the geth armour for rex. It looks tne most bad ass in my opinion.scan as many materials as you can aswell....you`ll be gald for it when you get on to ME2.

basically you get better drops when you level up, so most of the drops you get after somepoint are just useless and you can sell them so you can afford spectre weapons from citadel, this game differs alot from other RPGs like Dragon Age for examble, the character upgrading is alot more simpler and maybe abit dull than in Dragon Age for examble, as for your char skills Id suggest you try to max the weapon skill for your weapon first, other stats as you feel, I myself like to get the ability to use heavyer armor if my class is able to learn to use medium/high armors , also intimidiate / charm is also very nice to have depending on if you wanna play as renegade or paragon, spectre training is also really important for the unity skill, while the game is relatively easy sometimes your squad mates will die and youre in alot more trouble if all the enemys are focusing on you

I am like the OP....I am NEW to ME1 and am playing through ME1 to gain the advantages of character import to ME2.....The hardest part for me so far though is controling my Squad's movement in combat..... They don't seem to have sence enough to take cover during battles. They just stand there and get slaughtered and then I have to clean up solo. What is the best way to keep the squad alive in combat? The interface seems a bit cluncky to me or maybe I am just doing something wrong.

Give them better armor plus Shield Interface/Battery/Regenerator and/or a Medical Exoskeleton. Don't worry too much about them, though, they're mostly useless anyway.

Keep your squad away from you, preferably way in front. They'll draw a lot of enemy fire, leaving you to kill the enemies without being under so much fire yourself. When the enemies start coming after you and only you, you know it's time to use Unity.

Also, I always set the squad power option to none or defense only, so that I can use the offensive powers myself.

Don't forget about the grenades.

I agree with the above comments that the medical interface/exoskeleton is the best armor upgrade. Put a scanner upgrade on the pistol belonging to your least weapons-dependent squadmate (e.g. Kaiden or Liara). Keep your weapons and those of your gun-oriented squadmates (e.g. Ashley, Wrex) upgraded with heat absorbers and stabilizers.
