The first time you do the quest with the crazy biotic girl and her boyfriend on life support, until you find out what's really going on and how easy to kill she is.

That was pretty scary. Just finding a vegetated man on an abandoned, silent ship, drifting through space...

Most tense moment for me was Shepard getting 'Darth Vadereth' by Saren. And the Rachni.

It's probably this one; totally caught me off guard. The Noveria Rachni are worth mentioning, too.

I don't think any part of Mass Effect is really "scary", but I did find the husks creepy when they first appeared (especially when I realised why the geth impaled that colonist). In ME2, the husks just seem like generic zombies (right down to the moaning).

My first playthrough was an Earthborn Sole-Survivor (not default) so running into my first Thresher Maw was horrifying on multiple levels. I tend to get really involved in my characters so when the giant worm popped up and I saw that it was a Thresher Maw, I leaped into my Shepard's head and thought "Oh my God, it's the thing that killed all my friends! Now it's back for me!" After driving for ten minutes I realized that it wasn't following me and went back to kill it. Oddly, I still get more nervous fighting Thresher Maws with that Shepard than any other.

I have to agree about meeting a Thresher for the first time being scary. I screamed and threw my controller across the room.

A level 3 engineer on Insanity recruiting Liara and seeing a red flash of death. It wasn't that it was scary, just caught me off guard.

When the Thorian first birthed the Asari clone, the stare the asari gave you while introducing the Thorian still gives me the shivers.

(In fact, rachni were the sole reason I added an assault rifle to my Shep's talents on New Game Plus - I wanted something bigger than a pistol to back up my sniper rifle.)

Should've gone with shotguns, they massacre rachni.

Also, Husk ship. Goddamn Husk ship!

Where was the husk ship?

The worst for me is when I'll be driving through an uncharted world, and a thresher comes up right under me and chucks my MAKO like 30 feet. Out of nowhere man

Yeah, the Feros mission was well done. Right away you realise something's not quite right and the colonists are hiding something. It's like the Wicker Man. With robots and explosions.

haha! I definitely agree. Yeah, husks, rachni, saren's undead corpse were all kinda weird, and the first thresher maw I ever faced made me jump for a second whenever it just randomly popped out of the dirt screeching, i admit - but nothin' bad really; The Feros mission though was just straight up eerie as ****. That entire time, I felt like Nicholas Cage, or Edward Woodward, running around trying to figure at what the hell's up with these people, and then the next thing I know, they're trying to kill me. However, unlike the Wicker Man, I slaughtered the townsfolk, not the other way around haha, then next gameplay I decided to be Paragon cause' after that mission, I really needed to have a stogie to settle down hahaha

lol, now that I remember, this was an eerie mission too, but I was pretty certain that some crazy mofo was going to stab me in the back, so I was prepared whenever that chick started blasting at me

Seeing the husks for the first time. Anything related to organic mutilation is scary (which is why I found the game Dead Space disturbing) so when I saw Saren in the final part of the game, I was like, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

Agreed wholeheartedly.
And sure, it's an easy task.
But the atmosphere is genuinely disconcerting.
It didn't help that the first time I encountered her, she died with the most maniacal grimace on her face...

Feros was just...unsettling to say the least. The first time I played, I thought the thorian creepers were the colonists, so I was trying to just run around until I could get them all in a big group so i wouldn't waste grenades (stupid I know), the only thing I ended up getting was a critical mission failure... and once you get into the thorian's lair, those dormant creepers, just huddled there..when I first saw one, I was all watching it, making sure the moment I had my back turned it would jump out vomit out acid on me....

There was another mission, on an uncharted world were these researchers became machine cultist and somehow turned into husks, but when I went into the mining shaft, there were these two doors (right next to each other), and right right when I got near one of them, the door suddenly opened, and like, 15 husks run out. In my pistol shooting frenzy of surprise, I back into the other door, which also happened to open by itself, and out come 15 more husks... needless to say, I love biotic lift, and carnage very, very much.

I still twitch a little when, in the middle of a fight, I think they're gonna pop up in one place and they pop up right underneath me, lol.

I disliked the ghost ship with the husks, but scariest, as in I jumped and dropped my controller? My first Thresher Maw encounter. I totally wasn't expecting it, I was just driving around like an idiot, saw a wide open space and was all, "Let's open this baby up! Whoooo!" and then....

Those things are BIG. And that whole disappear and dodge thing? Annoying. Creepy. Not what I was expecting.

The worst part was the second time I was driving around on some unexplored world. Saw a big open space and figured, "Oh, well there won't be anything HERE. This is a totally different world!" And then I learned the importance of reading the Codex entries.... and dodging acid.

Now imagine that Rachni and Threser maws are related, and you encounter one on the way to peak 15.

Walking in and seeing the Thorian for the first time. I had no idea what was going to happen and I was all out of grenades from incapacitating the colonists.
