That first Thorian on Feros gave me flashbacks to the first zombie cutscene from the original Resident Evil, heh.

Thresher maws, by far. They *still* startle the heck out of me when they pop up out of the ground. The first time I stumbled across one I nearly had a heart attack... darn Bioware. :P

For me to be honest was talking to Wrex on Virmire.
While walking towards him there is some pretty intense music, and the sound of him shooting.
It was pretty clear something important was about to happen. :D

Absolutely, those things make me jump almost every time.  If I don't get startled I feel as though I've accomplished something.

I have to agree about meeting a Thresher for the first time being scary. I screamed and threw my controller across the room.

Nothing really.

The Prothean vision was pretty intense, though. Never understood why it had such a small presence in ME2, same for Saren and Sovereign: those should've certainly had some flashbacks.

mine was letting wrex decide whether to shoot you or put his gun down on Virmire. I kept waiting for Ashley or me to snipe him, but instead he came through. I had a heart attack when i mistook his voice for a gun shot.

Scariest: Wrex on Virmire.

Most startling: Thresher Maw attacks.

Feros. I find the whole mission unsettling, and when you get back from the Sky-way and the creepers are there.... ;-;

Noveria too, the first scene where you see a Rachni Warrior...I was like, that looks like a Rachni (from Codex pic), but that's impossible...then it proceeded to annihilate me with it's damn shield bypassing acid spit ¬_¬

And Ilos. Finding out what happened to the last Protheans is horrible. As Anderson puts it: "It's nightmare stuff".

TudorWolf made a good point with Ilos. When i heard the Prothean guy going "ALL IS LOST!" i got more depressed than an emo kid who has no arms.

For me it was near the end when you have jumped back to the citadel and you get the cut scene where sovereign and its backup fleet are heading in to dock. It's not often that a game scene will make my blood run cold... that did it for me though lol.

I think the scariest moment in ME1 for me would have to be on Virmire, making the decision between Ash & Kai to be left behind...very very very hard choice if you ask me

I was scared of making a bad decision and f*cking the game up

My scariest moment on mass effect was the VERY FIRST time i was driving my mako calm and quiet on a small planet enjoyin the serenity of the moment when all of a sudden A-GIANT-MONSTER-WORM-BEAST JUMPED OUT OF THE GROUND AT POINT BLANK RANGE!

I had the exact same reaction. And for the first game, every Thresher Maw was a horrible experience. Then I learned about making the Mako jump. Then we were cool, with the spitting thing and the jumping thing and the maw dying thing.

So Do I!! I am new to ME1 and still not familiar with the hit-and-run strategy when against maw (I admit that I am not good at driving games;P), it seems that the maw in ME 2 is much easier to kill with heavy weapons:pinched:

For me it was the Rachni on Noveria. They just kept coming out of nowhere!

It's a different kind of scary that got me: standing in front of the Rachni Queen after she asks if you will consign them to the silence of memory. And it struck me in an in-universe moment: Commander Shepard, Savior of Elysium, hero of Eden Prime, first human Spectre, and champion of the Battle of the Citadel...and with a single choice, my legacy two centuries from now could easily be "Unleashed the rachni back upon the galaxy".

I have never in my life spent as long weighing a video game decision as I did that one. Probably ten minutes the first time of real consideration.

And no matter how Renegade, I've never played a Shepard who could pull the trigger on an entire species. "That," she answers the Council in my head, "I leave to your far greater experience. Hate to think I'd miss one."

I'm a new player (didn't have a computer that could handle the game until recently nor an X-Box 360) and just started. So far, even though I've read many spoilers and know what Saren's ship really is, I find Saren's ship very scary from the various cutscenes and the descriptions of survivors when it came in. Reminds me of the Shadow ships from Babylon-5, especially the "scream in your mind" part.

Husks are creepy and I'm sure I'll be hating them in later missions where I can't burn them down from a distance.

There weren't any really scary parts for me in ME1 - having played the first FEAR pre-release in a surround sound room on a HiDef monitor still makes me crawl. Climbing through vents and hearing someone climbing right behind you, and stop when you stop? I swore that the whole thing was scripted and I was watching a cut-scene.

In ME1, what made me jump the most was when I was driving around in the Mako on one of the planets with a Thresher Maw. I had seen one before, so I knew what to expect, but in the middle of an intense battle the thing literally opened up under me - I didn't get instagibbed, but my Mako caught on fire and I could tell I was about to get destroyed. Coming out on top of that battle made it so much better. I never fought Thresher Maws the same, after that.

Other points of note were things with discordant sounds - I'm pretty susceptible to displeasing sounds, so the first time through things like the Prothean visions, killing the nerve bulges of the Thorian, and fighting Saren at the end really bothered me. I take my headphones off at those points, now.

The Creepers on Feros never bothered me, the first time I ran in to them I was on Veteran - I killed the first one, opened the door, had a massive, "OH **** GET IN THE MAKO NAOW" moment, and proceeded to gleefully run down every last Creeper. They never had a strong effect on me, because of that.

There's a cutscene from YouTube I found: Hamlet performed by an all-elcor cast, which sounds amusing at first but the "entire 14 hour experience" part sounds frightening.

Though I think that's ME2 so it likely doesn't
count.

Perhaps the actual play should be put in the third game? Either a mission that happens during the play so you hear it in the background or you get forced to sit through the whole thing as a punishment?

Sovereign's dialogue on Virmire. Probably mostly because of his creepifying voice, but still. Scary.
