"Duncan summoned me to a small clearing in the ruined city of Ostagar to complete The Joining. The Grey Warden ritual exacts an incredible toll on the petitioner, but it grants great power and prevents the Taint of Darkspawn from infecting you. You can sense the Darkspawn and they can sense you. Consuming the blood of the Darkspawn that I had collected in the forest, I found myself transformed. Being a Grey Warden was more than title – my life had changed."

http://www.gamingtre...s.php?artID=503

Now that coupled with:

"...in the process of recruiting us by explaining to the keeper that we'd fallen under the spell of the darkspawn and only joining the grey wardens would save our character's life."

http://www.gamespot....4&mode=previews

These seem to suggest that there's some deeper connection between the Darkspawn, the Grey Wardens, and humanity as a whole than the typical 'Orcs with Another Name' evil race usually has. Now the introduction cinematic states that Darkspawn were created by five mages who sought power that they couldn't control, and were twisted and corrupted, becoming the first Darkspawn.

So there are multiple references to the 'Taint/Spell of the Darkspawn', but we haven't yet seen any mention of it outside of those instances. Is the reason the Darkspawn horde grows so large so quickly because they are capable of turning others into Darkspawn? Are Grey Wardens simply humans who take the first steps in this process so that they may know the Darkspawn better, and thus be better fighters against them?

Perhaps I'm completely off base, but it does seem rather curious to me that something with that kind of potential for trouble would go under the radar.

as far as how the darkspawn's numbers grow so quickly, can't really say but if you really are that curious pick the prequel book The Calling. It explains that they Grey Warden are more just immune to the darkspawn taint but pretty much end up becoming corrupted but not necessarily a darkspawn. Most however die before the transformation is complete or are killed by the darkspawn before this happens.

The taint of the darkspawn is the blight. Getting the blight doesn't turn your into a darkspawn; it either kills you or turns you into a ghoul, and you die a bit later.

Archdemon is a Dragon that has been afflicted with the Blight. They are also known as the Old Gods. The Darkspawn seek the Old Gods to cause a blight to destroy all humanity.

This irks me.

The devs said one cannot become a darkspawn or join them..Yet, from what little I heard from the Calling, ii appears you can join them. And that blight works somehow differently? Just WTF? Someone who read it mind explaining that to me?

The Grey wardens who are effected by the blight eventually become ghouls. They usually become the workers for the Darkspawn.

Darkspawn do NOT reproduce by infecting humans. All that does is create ghouls who die soon enough. Many of us have theorized, darkspawn may multiply through the broodmother. But that would be speculation- there is no confirmation on that.

Grey Wardens exist as a temporary hybrid of sorts between humans and Dark Spawn. Their ritual leads to them imbibing some of the taint as it exists in the Dark Spawn. Or, Grey Wardens retain some of their humanity- at least for a while, while getting access to the Darkspawn hive mind. And life for them is a struggle. They have the taint that spreads within them and when it gets more powerful than the human side, they go down to the deep roads for their Calling.

MAJOR spoilers ahead.

Darkspawn have no purpose, or capability for higher level thinking. Their only instinct is to dig to the High Dragon who gets corrupted by their very touch and leads them against humans.

One "dude" believes this is not the only way and offers a "solution" where the Blight can be ended. He cannot control the Darkspawn and ask them to stand down because the call of the Old Gods is far more powerful. But joining him would not be equal to joining the Darkspawn because HIS agenda is completely different.

Interesting. I wonder how far into the game the whole 'you are going to inevitably become a slobbering ghoul who will serve the Darkspawn' thing will come up.

so then is there some way to overcome or undo what the gray wardens have become? I know most of my characters will be totally pissed when they find this out and if possible will go after duncan and whoever else they can find to take out there anger on. Or will that not be an option?

well i hope the character would know before he becomes a varden, i mean it just seems silly to think you can gain a new power with no real backlash

The calling isn't something that happens anytime soon. Duncan has been a Warden for decades. The point of becoming a Grey Warden is to become closer to the Darkspawn, by being able to sense them and hear their hivemind, the trade-off is that you are infected with the taint - only its a lot weaker than what a normal human would experience if blighted.

I do seem to recall a shortened lifespan being one of the side effects as well. The Joining is a ritual where they drink Darkspawn Blood. Most who attempt the ritual die unless at the peak of physical health. Those who survive wind up being able to sense the proximity of Darkspawn, and dream constantly in connection with the Darkspawn hive mind. Over time, a Warden begins to hear the almost siren song effect of Old God dragons, and go down into the Deep Roads to kill Darkspawn until they die in turn. That'd be "the Calling" that you see mentioned. Given enough time, a Warden begins to develop patchs of skin that blacken and rot, hair falls out, eyes go red, etc. etc. as their body slowly shifts and becomes the same as any other Darkspawn's. Some things to note on that are: it can be artificially sped up, most the time at normal speed it can drive them insane and at the least alters their emotional states a bit, but they do maintain some modicum of independent will unlike other Darkspawn, and to date there's only been one person ever who's been 'cured'. That being said it's still possible said person (Fiona) could degrade down to that point in the future, as was mentioned previous. Also, the Joining can be done with animals as well, which is interesting.

Interesting. So the ghoul bit is only what happens if a Grey Warden doesn't actually die when he goes down to the Deep Roads to kill Darkspawn?

Wherever a Darkspawn moves, everything in the area becomes Blighted and diseased. The best example I can think of is kinda like Zerg creep growing in Starcraft. Ghouls are what occur when common, everyday people become infected with said corruptions from exposure, dying of wasting illnesses, or turning into Ghouls, mindless Darkspawn minions that don't survive very long. A Warden surviving in the Deep Roads is a bit different, in that their 'natural' resistances allow them to maintain their self awareness and survive in said state for a while, unlike the ghouls continuing to deteriorate.

I would assume, given what little has been officially revealed, that the original five stole women from the various races and corrupted and/or mated with them (read: raped) somehow creating the brood mothers who produce the different forms of darkspawn based on the original race of the female:
human = hurlock
dwarf = genlock
elf = sharlock (aka shriek)
qunari = ogre
