Heal, Freezing spells, and spells that paralyze or similar. I found the Glyph line to be very good for all levels. Watching Darkspawn go flying backwards trying to get to Wynne on the Arch Demon was hilarious.

I've started yet another mage and this time, I wanted to plan, especially for the early levels. So I made a list:
In order, starting with character creation:
Arcane Bolt (free), Winter's Grasp, Mind Blast
Drain Life
Heal (just in time for Korcari Wilds)
Flame Blast
Frost Weapons, Flaming Weapons (Joining; want Flaming Weapons for Tower of Ishal)
Cone of Cold
Vulnerability Hex
Force Field
Telekinetic Weapons
Crushing Prison
Death Magic
Fireball
Affliction Hex
Misdirection Hex
Curse of Mortality
Inferno
Blizzard
Blood Magic
Blood Sacrifice
Blood Wound
Death Hex
Death Cloud
And maybe from tomes:
Lightning
Shock
Tempest
I'm not as wedded to the later levels, but I wanted to plan out the first 7 or 8 so that I have survivability in the early levels, when Alistair is a little too squishy to handle large groups all by himself. Considering that I'm going for mostly damaging spells, I'll be drawing a lot of aggro, so I want to be able to handle that. I'll be bringing Wynne along for healing/buffing, and giving her glyphs as well so hopefully there will be a good synergy between the two.
