So, I know there have been a couple of threads up on this matter but none of their solutions seem to be working for me.

The error is the following; during the installation of ME1 (from the DVD) an error occurs (first at 34.2% of maps loading, for three consecutive times, then at 28,5% if thats makes any difference). The error states something along the line of "there's been an error and that it couldn't write saferun.exe", if I choose to ignore this error it instantly has a problem with the saferun.dll file instead and then crashes.

People have been claiming it's the disc drive who's broken, this can't be the case since I ran this game on my old computer perfectly (my old and new computers share the same hard/disc drives, everything else is new).

Also I found this website claiming that the problem is actually in the exporting of the files to the computer, and that you should do this manually using WinRAR or something of the like. Having installed WinRAR I worked my way, without errors, until i reached the maps01.rar file. Then, at 28% (like before!) it started "not responding" and I had to crash it.

I'm out of ideas. Can Bioware P L E A S E adress this issue, since I'm clearly not the only one.

My system is running windows 7 professional 64-bit
Asus EAH4890 graphics card
Asus M4A78T-E motherboard
AMD Phenom II x4 945  at 3,1 GHz

Tried starting the comp. in safe mode and installing it there but the same thing happened.

I know this game once worked on my old comp and thus its harddrive and discdrive. So either it's my new upgraded parts (not likely) or my Windows 7.

Bioware...?

The crash occurs when I'm extracting the file "BIOA-ICE60_07_DSG.SFM" and I've reached 27% of exctracting it, and the entire process has reached 33%.

If you're doubting the frequency in which this error occurs, here are some other threads trying to deal with the same error.

Try going into your device manager and unistall your cd/dvd drives. They will reload when you reboot. Once rebooted and they are auto-detected and installed, try the game install.

The installation seems to have stopped at 28.8%....
Thanks for trying to help tho, any other ideas?
BTW, The fact that it didn't install when I started it in Safe Mode pretty much means that there are no programs interfering with it, right?

In the past if I couldn't get a game to install, I copied the entire cd contents into a folder on my desktop and ran the install from there to avoid cd/dvd issues. It may be worth a try

Haha, so this happened: it crashed again. Only this time, it crashed when I was transfering the files from the CD to my harddrive! Didn't even get to the point where I could try and install it. There seems to be some serious file-corruption here or something of the like.

Maybe I should clarify about the "crashing", what happens is that the percentage just stopps and If i want to cancel it, I have to use the task manager or whatever it's called (ctrl+alt+delete).

Help me please!

interesting. Do you have enough free space? Have you run a defrag on your Hard drive? Are you logged in with administrator rights? Good luck!

Administrator rights check,
I have 30,2 gig free and 10 is req.
I havent run a defrag but I doubt that will fix it. I'll try tho!

Ran it and again it starts looping into infinity when it extracts the maps01.rar file, I believe the problem is in this file since if I do everything manually, this is where the error occurs...

I have read in a few places that ME1 is not optimized to run under Win7. Not sure if that would cause an install issue or not. Have you tried a google search of ME1 + Win7?

Most of them seem to claim that you have to turn of the UAC, which I've already done, and run it as administrator which I'm doing already. Also, most of the threads were about the game crashing, I can't even get that far :P

Is there anyway I can download the game, from some EA store without having to pay for it again?

Glorious Day! I just got it to work!

Don't know what I did that's different tho, I wiped the CD once again, exited all possible could-interfere-with-installation programs and ran it as administrator.

Oh, lovely day!

Thanks a bunch for sticking with me Mr.BigA :)

If you notice that the error states 'C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect\\saferun.exe'

Thats an invalid destination, where the installer is actually made to extract to 'C:\\Program Files\\Bioware\\Mass Effect'

Anyone hoping to actually reach a Bioware or EA employee should be using the EA Help site, not this User to User discussion forum.  Nathan has been reading some of the messages about patch 1.04, but by now, his assignment could have ended.

The OP did provide more hardware information than is common here, until after the omission is remarked upon.

I'm not entirely certain that the "Saferun" connection mentioned here by the OP is a general one.  His problem has far more of the appearance of the various "Data Error" problems (see the Search option at the top).  This afflicts the owners of several brand named DVD drives, including Plextor (which is my preferred brand).  EA disks often begin being incompatible with some drives,  usually from the first attempted installation, but sometimes after days or even weeks of game play.
