one of the major complaints of ME1 was the elevator rides. in fact, it was one of the ways BW used to hide loading and immerse the player in the game. other ways were the scans when leaving/entering normand, as well as security scans to name a few. now that i experinced the new elternative in the way of loading screens that display the action taking place in wireframe or via mission compltet screens, i feel i prefere what ME1 offered in this regard since it kept you i the game. plus, it was a good way to listen to news and what your team mates have to say to each other (some conversations were funny and akward). ME1 felt to me more of an experince than a game, i wish BW just improved on their first concept.
what do you guys think? which loading system do you prefere?

I never ever had a problem with the elevator....the only time I even heard about people hating it was when I first read reviews/went on forums for ME1. I had no idea people hated them. I was entertained by the quirky conversations and interesting radio broadcasting guy. I definitly preferred elevators, but maybe the loading screens -which I find painfully long- help load the more advanced environments. Maybe the elevator being replaced was part of what helped texture loading.

I thought it must be some sort of attempt at an ironic joke that the awesome in-elevator hidden load screens (complete with the brilliant inter-squad talking that I loved) were replaced with a boring loading screen OF an elevator...

I sometimes hated the elevator scenes (didn't know they hid the loading screens :D), but now when ME 2 has the loading screens, I kinda miss 'em (haven't played ME 2 yet though lol)

Yeah, that was kind of funny.

But still, Elevators>Loading screens.

Doesn't matter if it was disguised as a loading screen or not, people feel that they are still in the game so they should be able to play the game. It was a loading screen but most people can accept a generic screen for loading but still technically being in game and not being in control is harder for people to come to terms with.

So what your saying is, Old way> New way? Because it's true...

i remember in ME1 going up the Citidal tower and looking out from the elevator, or using the C-Sec elevators in ME1 to get back to the normandy, I " felt " the scale of things. the feeling is goine in ME2, i need to believe the loading screen instead of being there. and don't get me started on going by truck from one spot to another, just watching a loading screen doing it for you instead of you the player driving and experiencing the size of the city/palnet. again, ME2 feels more of a game than an experience. ME2 could have been so much better.

Ya know.. In terms of all these complaints about some of the things done differently in ME 2 compared to ME 1 has anyone actually gone back to try to play ME 1 after beating ME 2?

I don't know about you guys, but I have, and to be honest it's a different experience after playing ME 2. Do I miss some things that were in ME , that are not in ME 2? Of Course, but overall, I really enjoy the more stremlined approach in ME 2, then ME 1. More importantly, in those character missions, where in ME 2 it seemed more part of the central game, while in ME 1 it was more of just a throw in. (I already did Wrex and Garrus's mission in ME 1, and they were no where near as cool as Grunt's or Garrus's mission in ME 2)

As for the evelators, In my opinion, they are chore, I just finished Novaria last night, and I kept on grunting at all those elevator sequences, it was just rather annoying. (Especially compared to the loading screens for me which because of my computer is usually only a few seconds, and it didn't seem to happen as often while in a mission..)

Don't get me wrong, I love ME 1 as much as I love ME 2, or I wouldn't be replaying ME 1 right now to get that full experience from a direct import for my ME 2 character I wanna go with sometime this weekend hopefully, but I think everyone just goes a litlte more nostalgia in terms of how they remember Mass Effect was when comparing it to ME 2 if they have not played it recently.

I'm not saying anything, I could care less how the game loads as long as it doesn't take more than 15 seconds. But as far as most people go if you give them a load screen they can deal with that, but being in the game and being unable to do anything is far less tolerable for most people.

I'd have rather they just improved the elevators, gave them more banter and put some kind of coding in to prevent you getting the same news report five times in a row. much more interesting than looping animations and a tip-of-the-day

Admittedly, before playing ME2 I could understand why people didn't necessarily like the use of long elevator rides as a stand-in for loading screens. However, now that I've played a few hours into ME2, I think I'm feeling similarly to some other folks here who have started to miss them.

I liked the party character interactions that would occasionally take place during those rides because they helped to flesh out the personalities of each of the different squad members. I liked hearing about news stories that either informed you of some potential new mission you were about to get or perhaps relay to you some of the after-effects of a mission you had completed, though the galactic news reports do kind of make up for that in ME2. It helped make you seem more a part of the game world and feel a bit like your actions truly had tangible consequences. Could the elevator rides have been shorter overall? Yeah, definitely, especially the ones in the Citadel.

If I were to suggest something for ME3 concerning loading screens vs. elevator rides, I would have to say that I personally feel that there should be a mix of the two depending upon where you are and group size. For instance, I feel that if you are on the Normandy and just running around solo, then use the load screens like ME2 does to go from deck to deck since there's really no reason for a long elevator ride sequence when your character is solo. Then, every time you are off the Normandy (whether it's in a city or on a mission) or have your squad with you, use the elevator ride sequences to allow for a slightly deeper immersion with the level/world around you and perhaps to also allow for interaction with/between squad mates.

Just my opinion, but I think there are definite positives for both scenarios that can help to balance out the RPG and shooter aspects of the game.

ME1 was an amazing experince that needed some tweekings here and there. but yes, it had probelms and yes ME2 improved on many probelms especialy in the technical department, as expected from it. But i dissagree with you regarding the side quests for your team. it is normal that your team's mission are better in ME2 since they make up 80% of the events in ME2 where in ME1 they are only considered side quests and make up only 5% of the game. it is an unfair comparisson in my openion.

In ME2, all of those Noveria elevators rides would be long, dull, quiet loading screens.
Also, the character mission weren't part of the central story in ME1, so of course they weren't as deep.

I think the elevators got a bad rep from the xbox, they were shorter on the PC version. And yes I enjoyed the comments on them as well. Then again ME2 loads in 5 secs or less this time around, unless you get the multi core bug.

Also, for the record, I loved the elevators when they were in. I don't want Bioware to think I'm a hypocrite.

Another thing the elevators provided, for the few times that it did, were side missions that were unlocked when a news report broke out.

Count me as one of many who miss the elevators as well. I think the only ones who complained about them were Xbox 360 owners because they're more of an instant gratification gamer than PC gamers. But that is just my opinion.
