I thought it must be some sort of attempt at an ironic joke that the awesome in-elevator hidden load screens (complete with the brilliant inter-squad talking that I loved) were replaced with a boring loading screen OF an elevator...

Doesn't matter if it was disguised as a loading screen or not, people feel that they are still in the game so they should be able to play the game. It was a loading screen but most people can accept a generic screen for loading but still technically being in game and not being in control is harder for people to come to terms with.

Ya know.. In terms of all these complaints about some of the things done differently in ME 2 compared to ME 1 has anyone actually gone back to try to play ME 1 after beating ME 2?
I don't know about you guys, but I have, and to be honest it's a different experience after playing ME 2. Do I miss some things that were in ME , that are not in ME 2? Of Course, but overall, I really enjoy the more stremlined approach in ME 2, then ME 1. More importantly, in those character missions, where in ME 2 it seemed more part of the central game, while in ME 1 it was more of just a throw in. (I already did Wrex and Garrus's mission in ME 1, and they were no where near as cool as Grunt's or Garrus's mission in ME 2)
As for the evelators, In my opinion, they are chore, I just finished Novaria last night, and I kept on grunting at all those elevator sequences, it was just rather annoying. (Especially compared to the loading screens for me which because of my computer is usually only a few seconds, and it didn't seem to happen as often while in a mission..)
Don't get me wrong, I love ME 1 as much as I love ME 2, or I wouldn't be replaying ME 1 right now to get that full experience from a direct import for my ME 2 character I wanna go with sometime this weekend hopefully, but I think everyone just goes a litlte more nostalgia in terms of how they remember Mass Effect was when comparing it to ME 2 if they have not played it recently.

Admittedly, before playing ME2 I could understand why people didn't necessarily like the use of long elevator rides as a stand-in for loading screens. However, now that I've played a few hours into ME2, I think I'm feeling similarly to some other folks here who have started to miss them.
I liked the party character interactions that would occasionally take place during those rides because they helped to flesh out the personalities of each of the different squad members. I liked hearing about news stories that either informed you of some potential new mission you were about to get or perhaps relay to you some of the after-effects of a mission you had completed, though the galactic news reports do kind of make up for that in ME2. It helped make you seem more a part of the game world and feel a bit like your actions truly had tangible consequences. Could the elevator rides have been shorter overall? Yeah, definitely, especially the ones in the Citadel.
If I were to suggest something for ME3 concerning loading screens vs. elevator rides, I would have to say that I personally feel that there should be a mix of the two depending upon where you are and group size. For instance, I feel that if you are on the Normandy and just running around solo, then use the load screens like ME2 does to go from deck to deck since there's really no reason for a long elevator ride sequence when your character is solo. Then, every time you are off the Normandy (whether it's in a city or on a mission) or have your squad with you, use the elevator ride sequences to allow for a slightly deeper immersion with the level/world around you and perhaps to also allow for interaction with/between squad mates.
Just my opinion, but I think there are definite positives for both scenarios that can help to balance out the RPG and shooter aspects of the game.
