This is not a hardware problem. a hardware related error would be stuff such as overheating, coroded equipment due to extremely humid enviroments, cold soder joints and so on. A software issue would be an error that makes you unable to do some sort of action, a file not loading properly and so on.
Furthermore, judging an issue to be a hardware/software error based upon how many people have this problem isn't an accurate assessment...It may indicate that something is wrong, but will not tell you where the problem is...

I just had this issue for the first time... also on a second playthrough, as someone else noted. My hardware did not change between playthroughs, aside from changing from a Logitech mouse to a Razer mouse (still using a Logitech G15 keyboard). Could the issue be related to logitech (hardware or software)?
In addition, I am in a new DLC system. Does it maybe only happen in certain new systems released in DLCs?

No, it's not limited to planets added by DLC. As far as I know, it's a random occurence. Personaly, I quicksave before I start the planet scanner. It still crashes know and then, but it's less of a nuisance. I still want a fix for this, however it seems less and less likely that we will get one.

Funnily enough, its called the "Read First" thread, which it seems you have also ignored. Once you read it, and do what it suggests you should have done from the beginning, then we might be able to help you.

I've got this bug as well. Here's why it's not a hardware issue. My keyboard works fine. The ESC key won't work anymore while scanning a planet for resources. There is NO exit key in the options to remap, I looked 5 times. Once I minimize ME2 the ESC key works everywhere. I can open my word processor, other games, it works. I re-maximize ME2, it doesnt work. If it was my keyboard, it wouldn't work out like that and you bug heads know it.
Now, for the things I have noticed. I played through this game once, from the beginning to the end. Loved it, no stuck ESC key what so ever. So now knowing what to expect, I import my ME1 Shephard. That is when this problem cropped up. Thinking... oh wow... is it an import bug? Nope. I went and used my first character that never imported from ME1, but the second playthrough, the bug is there.
So, for the record. First time playthrough, no bug for me. Import and 2nd playthroughs, big time bug.
So I uninstalled ME2. Took it off completely. Reinstalled. I ignored the storyline as soon as I could and scanned every planet in the whole freaking traverse, no bug. So I imported my ME1... bug is back with a vengence.
Bear with me. I uninstalled it again. Reinstalled it. Played through the storyline and finished it, no side quests. Another 30ish hours wasted. When it finished, I went and did a second playthrough with the same character, no import from ME1... bug is back.
Chant it with me... it's not a hardware problem... it's not a hardware problem...
It's a bug... it's a bug...
If this is not resolved by the time ME3 comes out, forget me buying it. I want to carry my original Shepard across all three games and into the future if possible. But this is a game breaker for me. I refuse to spend my scanning time scared silly I am stuck on that screen unless I end task ME2 and lose progress.

This bug just happened with me. After 12 months since the creation of this topic, does anyone found a fix?
EDIT: I just rebooted my system and the ESC key is working again on the planet scanner
EDIT2: I started scanning another planet and the ESC key stopped working again. I think that the problem is that I'm pressing it too soon after launching a probe and for some reason the game isn't recognizing the key anymore. Forcing the game to close and relaunching it makes the ESC key work again, unfortunately I lost all my progress

Launching a probe, not launching a probe, makes no difference. I've scanned planets and never fired off a probe on a hunch and tried to ESC out, no go. Stuck. I actually switched to the ME2 generated Shephard and continued playing after the storyline was done without doing a re-load of the career and the bug is gone. If I want it back, all I have to do is replay the same character or load an ME1 character and I'm screwed. Still not buying ME3. In fact, I can play X-Com: Enemy Unknown on my computer and the game runs without bugs. The fact some retro strategy game from way back when plays in DOSBox and my ESC never stops functioning there is a sad sad thing. And if anyone at Bioware hollers, "Hey, no fair man! It's not the same!" at the monitor, your anger is based on a truth. My esc key works in every app and every game except this planet scanning issue that is repeatable and easy to reproduce. Get with it or my retro game wins over ME3.... and that isn't really something Bioware really should want...

No, maybe someone should try sending esc to it via autoit or something, but i doubt it would work.
Maybe it has something to do with multiple monitor setup?

Well, I'm not into reviving old, dead threads... but instead of creating a new one I thought I could as well answer here...
The problem described in the OP seems to persist (I just installed from steam so it's pretty safe to assume that my ME2 is up to date): I'm stuck at the planet-scanning screen with no option to go back.
@evlo and all others possibly interested: Mapping the escape key to mouse button 5 (via X-Mouse Button Control) doesn't help at all.
And I want to second Oberdan's assumption that the problem is related to using an imported character file. (I imported my save from ME1)

The problem still persists with me as well. I also imported my character from ME1.

Mass effect 2. Same problem after playing for quite a bit with no issues.
