Well, it's not so much a lack of originality as a lack of options. Most of the female haircuts (actually, most of the haircuts in general) look awful, so of course most people are going to choose one of the only decent ones. As far as the facial structure goes, most of it is simply coincidence.Luc0s wrote...
It's funny to see how almost every femshep looks the same. Same haircut, same eyes, same brows, usually the same lips. Damn, you people seriously lack originality.
Though it's also possible that with face codes nowadays, people can just borrow someone else's code and tweak a few things here and there, leading to a lot of FemSheps with similar appearances.
In a lot of ways, this is true. Females don't really get a lot of options when it comes to hairstyles, or eyebrows. Most of the eyebrows are masculine. Another lacking feature is hair colors. You have a very slim selection to choose from, which makes it very difficult to accentuate facial features. The only real options you have to fiddle with is facial structure and skin tones. There's a lot you can still do with it, but hair, eyebrows and hair color also really help define a face.

I was fortunate and able to reproduce a fairly good example of my Oblivion character. The screenshot's from my old system without all the frills, but it works well enough for a comparison to my above ME2 pics.
Unlike ME though, you can simply import new meshes and textures to cover pretty much any issue you might have. ME1/2 and DA is a nice move for BioWare though. Not ideal, but it's far better than the systems used in their earlier games.
