I tried making a ME1 FemShep right now, just out of curiosity. I must admit that using different noses and types usually leads to something that looks like a tranny. The voice is great though.I don't think the problems with femsheps all looking the same is that the editor is poor, I think the problem stems more from a lack of viable options when making the face.
I think I'll always stick to my male Shep, playing as a woman feels too weird to me and I'm too used to seeing my character.
I think that's how most people are with the Commander, whatever you played is just how you see the character. I had a really hard time playing through ME1 with a male Shepard, not because there is anything wrong with that, it's just not what I was used to. As a result I didn't even try one in ME2.
I am an exeption at the rule. I had 3 playthroughs in ME1 with my canon custom maleShep, 2 playthroughs with a different custom Shepard. My 6rd playthrough in ME1 I realized that the default maleShep (Mark van der Loo) looks much better then any of my custom maleSheps.
Since then I tent to stick with de default face for my maleShep. When I imported my custom canon maleShep to ME2, I chose the default Vanderloo face again, instead of sticking around with my custom face.
Does the default Shepard have a ID code like the rest?. I never actually tried or checked, but im curious!. =)
