Was Harbinger's nature really obvious to most people?

Okay first off are people saying he actually is a Reaper or is being indoctrinated by a Reaper?

It'd appear the Reaper --Harbinger-- is remotely controlling the Collector General and then also the basic Collector drones similar to how Sovereign takes over Saren's body in ME1 for the final part of the fight. The Collectors are said (in the Codex) to have implants in their brain which allow this sort of control.

I was in deep concentration while trying to stay alive during combat in my first play through, so when he was mad gabbing during combat, it became ambient noise. Didnt really realize this till the end.

I finished the game and I still didn't realise, what the hell is wrong with me. . Guess I'll pay more attention in round 2?

I was kinda amazed by the graphics only a foot away from my face, so I was more focused on the very center of the screen where you see the CollGen rather than what was at his holographic station until I played through the last mission for like the third time. Kinda surprising, but not overly so.

The fact he referred to Shepard by name threw me off, I have to admit. I never expected a Reaper - so high and mighty as they see themselves - to 'lower' itself to referring to a human adversary by name.

Thank you, that was a good explanation. Everyone else's was very confusing.

i figured out something on my second play through i think it was after i done the sucide mission i talk to mordin and he was talking about collecters. An intresting thing he said is that they were implanted by chip in there heads so in turn the changed protheans have no so or anything just like saren in the end in mass effect 1.

Here's what I don't get.... how does Shepard know that Harbinger is a reaper?

Also would a Reaper call itself Harbinger? Sovereign was a name given by Saren. Nazara was what the entity called itself.

So again, how does Shepard know any of this? He wasn't in the room when the reaper released control of the Collector General.

well tbh i dont know how peopel think its "revealed at the end" when in the horizon mission where you first see the collector general you hear harbringer say "assuming control" and the collector generals eyes change color. also the hologram of the reaper is on his console during this time also

Yes, but the hologram is only partially visible and it's only easy to see what it depicts in hindsight. Also, the fact that the Collector General's eyes change colour when Harbinger first says "Assuming control" doesn't suggest on the first playthrough that he himself is being controlled, it suggests that he is controlling a minion and when that occurs both entities' eyes glow.

After the ending of ME1 where Soverign "assumes direct control" of Saren, it became readily obvious that Harbinger was in fact a Reaper possessing his minions.

Considering you see the yellow reaper hologram in one of the first cut scenes involving the Collecter General...no, it wasn't a surprise to me. :P

When did Shepard find out Harbinger's name?

What I find difficult to understand is how Harbinger could control anyone or anything from so great a distance.

yeah i immediately understood he was a collector being controlled by a reaper. i guess it never occurred to me to think otherwise. i was actually more surprised to learn the collectors had a "general" - i naturally assumed it was all collector foot soldiers and only a reaper, i didn't know there was a collector in between the chain of command.

To two guys above me: I think Shepard is actually the one that named it Harbinger, just as Saren named Nazara Sovereign.

E: Nevermind, seems like he actually refers to himself as "Harbinger" instead of "the harbinger" a couple of times.

I knew Harbinger and the Collector General were seperate entities, but I never really put much thought into what Harbinger actually was. I assumed he was just sort of the 'fighting force' for the Collector General, considering he was always possesing drones and doing all the dirty work. When I figured out Harbinger was a Reaper, it didn't even really phase me. Just sorta "Oh, okay."

I knew he was a Reaper. The voice, and rhetoric gave it away.

lol, this is actually the first time I'm hearing about it.

I didn't really think that because, all of the "signs" that show that it is actually a Reaper can be easily explained by "they work for the Reapers plus they were genetically modified by them". That goes for having that voice, the way they speak, or showing a Reaper hologram in a collector ship(for me that sounded like a leap). As for the "assuming control" it is not hinted but explicitly said by the developers that it is the collector general's ability.

I also thought in the last movie the general was trying to override the blowing up thing, didn't understand how or why he kept speaking, now it makes more sense, yet it doesn't feel like a big surprise.

Still loved the game though =)

I assumed he was the next reaper from the first time I saw him. Didn't even occur to me that the voice might be the collector general until I came to these forums after beating it (and subsequently saw a loading screen say that "the collector general can take control," etc.). Just always assumed the collector general was a middleman, and not the chatty type.

Wasn't thinking about what he was to begin with. Too busy going "Woo ME2".

So yes, I got the "oh you sonofa" reaction near the end when I realised it.

Pretty much this. (There was a lot of stuff that got dumbed down in my first playthrough, since I was riding so high on my happy-cloud that everything was a little hazy.)

I assumed it was a reaper from the start.

It knew Shepard's name.

It had the creepy voice.

And it assumed control of the Collector, the way that Sovereignn took over Saren's form, in the battle of the Citadel, complete with turning the possessed body all glow like.

For me, the real surprise was that the Collectors were once Prothean!

Never saw that coming.

The Collectors look nothng like the Prothean statues on Ilos.

Talk about extensive genetic rewrites!

I pretty much knew the entire story of ME 2 besides that Shepard would be working for Cerberus before the game even came out, to be honest.

Sadly, I wasn't surprised at all. I figured from the first "assuming direct control" moment on Horizon that it was a Reaper controlling the Collectors (through the General). I mean, who else could be behind everything? The voice of Harbinger and the fact that the plot reminds you that the Collectors are probbably working for the Reapers made it pretty obvious. When it was revealed at the end, I was sad it was exactly as I had figured.

It would've shocked me had it NOT been a Reaper.
