Was Harbinger's nature really obvious to most people?

The thing that surprised me was that the collectors where innocent. I had a tear when the Collector General raised his claw into the air as Harbinger left him to die.

But yes,I was very surprised who Harbinger really was.

Can't say there was much in the game that gave me a "whoa, really?" moment. All of it was fairly predictable. I thought it was pretty obvious myself.

I heard his voice once and figured he was a Reaper.

honestly not trying to sound like a dick..but...how could you NOT know he was a reaper? "assuming control" glowing eyes...first time you run into one of them being taken over it repeats the "assuming control" and the thing transforms OBVIOUSLY as Saren did in ME1...

sorry but how slow can you be to not have figured it out after fighting the first one

The name gave it away.

Wow, I'd never have thought that it would come as a surprise to that many :s I just figured it was an established fact from the get-go.

If that was supposed to be a plot twist, then BW are getting sloppy...

But I guess it's just even cooler for all those who never saw it until the end, seeing as it brings a little more excitement into the game =)

My first post here - yay!

I didn't know until the end, and I still don't think it was very well explained tbh.

too add:

a) if you played mass effect one...he sounded exactly like sovereign

B) at the very least when you found out that the collectors were former prothean pawns...it should have been abundantly clear

c) We know from the first hour in the game that the collectors are pawns

d) ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL

cba to trawl back through the thread and find the right post to quote but there was a guy in here who said that this game really lacked a conversation with harbinger. A moment where you found out what's really been going on like you did with Sovreign on Virmire.

I can't agree enough with that.

While I didn't really give a crap, I wasn't surprised at the end.

Well I found that Prothean Beacon that made me realize the Collectors were Protheans very early on in my first runthrough...and since I knew how the Reapers had used the Keepers from the first game and already knew how the Reapers rolled it was no surprise to me when I first met Harbringer on Horizon what he was and what he was all about.

It never occured to me it was supposed to be surprising at all. I figured anybody who played the first game would know immediately what was going on.

Having said that I had no clue what the Collectors were doing with the weird things they collected, and why they were capturing humans until the final mission.

I never really thought about it, "oh collectors have some big boss who likes to assume control of the soldiers" then i continued fighting. At the end I was a little puzzled why he just collapsed. I never thought the voice was similar to Sovereign's.

So yeah, I'm very slow with this kind of things. But my graduation thesis still got an excellent grade and I'm going to have an article published in a linguistics journal this summer so don't tell me I'm too slow.

Didn't know for sure till the end, didn't/couldn't play ME1. Was suspecting there was more going on.

On a side note:

I think Harbinger is born of the Prothian's genetic material.

The Human Reaper larvae kinda gave me that idea and the look of the collector general and the reaper form of Harbinger.

I was confused for sometime because of the subtitle. Kept saying collector general when he spoke. At least it kept me entertained.

I didn't really think of it until the final scene. It could've been some sort of controller Collector just as easily.

I was surprised for 2 reasons:

1. didn't really think about it but i think i kind of knew subconsciously, but if you asked me, i wouldn't have had an answer at the time.

2. i marathoned mass effect 2 across a week (damn you school!) and so everything happened so fast and i was more concerned with helping and keeping my crew alive througout the game.

i did realize harbinger needed more lines when fighting him because it started to repeat a lot during a long fight

boggles the mind people were suprised by that at the end. They didnt even hide the fact its was a reaper "assuming control". Mouse over or target him.. it say "Harbinger".. sounds reaper-esk. I knew as soon as I saw him on Horizon. He speaks like a reaper.. and he takes over people in EXACTLY the same visual way as soverign did to Saren at the end of ME1.

I was stupidly surprised, because honestly, I was just too excited to be playing ME2 to notice finer details in the story.

However, I do have a few questions.

The Collectors collecting human was to make the Reaper obviously.  So what about all the other things/people they collected?  The Batarian twins or set of left handed salarians and all that.  Before it just seemed like quirky things.  Were they making Reapers from them too, or something different?

And secondly, how did the Protheans become Collectors?  I mean, it's not really explained other than to say the Reapers altered their DNA.  Well, oookay...but did the Reapers just take a ton of indoctrinated Protheans with them back into the center of the galaxy and drop them off on that fancy Collector base?  Or did they go into dark space with the Reapers--could they even survive there?  I'm guess I'm just kind of confused on how the whole thing transpired.  I feel like the story in ME2 is not layered and sensible like the first one was, sometimes.  I mean, the whole STORY or the Protheans is fantastic, and Bioware really missed an opportunity to really flesh out a great part of the story by just glossing over what became of them and how they transformed into the Collectors.

And also, when you destroy the Collector base, does that mean all the collectors are dead?  Because, y'know, it's just one base.  Don't you think they'd be smarter--and more efficient--and build more than just one base?
