Poor Jacob, I feel so sorry for him. He was all cool and awesome in ME: Galaxy, and in ME2 he's sidelined (even as ME: Galaxy co-star. And although Kaidin did generate some male ire, he certainly has at least something of a fan following. (At least Alistair shows that Bioware can create compelling and popular Male NPCs...)
And I can't help but think how hard it is to get a sense of character popularity. I'd like to think that Miranda has broad mainstream popularity but I have no way of knowing that. (As I've said before, I think she's a strong candidate for an ME3 spot not just based on her popularity, but because she's so tied into ME2, her inclusion would be one of the strongest continuity links with the second game.)
Kaidain is actually deceptively popular, tho I guess its almost completely a female / gay male fandom. His fans aren't noisy and pushy about him like the Tali and Garrus fandoms, and they don't frequent these message boards as much. But check fanfiction and fanart sites, and you'll find plenty of material about him.
Jacob... Doesn't really seem to have made an impact, one way or the other. The only real irritation about him, is that supposedly FemSheps are forced to be at least somewhat flirty with the guy, if you want to talk with him. And that irritates people who either don't want an LI, are trying to stay with Liara or Kaidan, or are aiming for some of the ME2 LIs.
