It's hard to tell - all we know is that they had a bottle of champagne together. It could've lead to something else - but ultimately, Jacob wasn't the kind of man that Miranda needed.

I don't think that it was really all that much tbh. I viewed as just a baby relationship of sorts between the two. Since we know how hard it is for Miranda to open up, and how she only settles for the best it wouldn't work with Jacob.

I personally thought that "I only accept the best" quote was a flirt, to be honest.

I think she see's a lot of her qualities in Shepard - ambitious, both have been through hell, rough childhoods, been faced with impossible situations and told to solve them, etc.

I actually think it was probably sorta serious, at least for a little while. Jacob's pretty tight-lipped about this, which doesn't help matters. (Is he not saying much because there's nothing to say, or is he not saying much because it's incredibly uncomfortable?) I say thi spartly because part of Miranda's appeal (imo) is she's a mature, grown-up woman, and that includes having had past serious relationships. Most of those relationships are doomed, however, because she's emotionally inaccessible. So I imagine a cycle where she meets someone who she likes or is attracted to (probably not often, but in 35 years, not never) and lets down her guard a bit and warms to the guy and she sees her softer side. Then, since Miranda's never been valued for the person she is, she worries that she'll be rejected, or Jacob (or whoever) is only attracted to her surface perfections. So as a kind of defense mechanism, she freezes him out.

Which is actually how I would write the ME3 continuation of this romance if it were me: Miranda freaking out a bit that she's shown too much/is too vulnerable now, with Shepard having to re-assure her. Makes me miss the DAO-style of romances; although Miranda's certainly my favorite LI in either game, I liked being able to form the relationship earlier and have follow-on conversations.
