I’m interested in what could’ve pulled them apart. I’d imagine that Jacob joining Cerberus and her becoming his ranking officer would change their relationship somewhat—Jacob would become part of her job life, which she handles with cold professionalism.
Also, she’s poured the last two years of her life into Shepard and only Shepard. I could see the Lazarus Project becoming a bit of an obsession for her, something that drives everything else to the background.
It may have come down to Jacob or her work. Two guesses which would come first.
I actually like this interpretation. Maybe things are going fine with Jacob, and then she gets thrown this big project, a chance to really cut loose with her intellect and use as many resources, and she can't resist. They certainly wouldn't be the first couple to drift apart over work, and there are plenty of smart, ambitiuous people who value their career accomplishments over human relationships.
Which makes me feel really, really sorry for Jacob, because if this is the case, he lost to Shepard while Shepard was still dead. He doesn't seem to hold much ill will, though, which is a good reflection of their maturity in handling the situation. (Although all the LIs in the Normandy get all drama queen if you're spending too much time talking to someone else...)

"Ladies, there's enough of me for both of you."
Didn't work in ME1, but it's clear in ME3 Bioware will give the fans what they want!

Is anyone else having problems with this site logging you off every thirty seconds, making you have to sign in again damn near every time you post?
Is there a way to fix this?
Happens here. No clue how to fix.
And yet it never does this as much when you're talking in groups.

While it's a good idea..
I just don't know if it's right. No man is going to be cool to the person who stole his chances with a beautiful woman. Take Chuck for example - when Bryce stole his girl. I don't think Jacob would easily forgive Shepard for that.
I think it was a small one time thing - and I think Jacob ultimately realized that he was just not the man that Miranda needed. He doesn't have the qualities that she desires - and he says voices that.

Ehh, I wouldn't go far. Partially because I don't want an army of Tali fans marching in here and killing us all, but I don't really mind her. Her crush was kind of cute, but I only really saw it as like, your best friend's little sister who has a crush on you.

Now, now, this is the LOOOOVE thread.
But to Shinigami: I like Tali, but I sorta view her as Shepard's little sister. I don't care for the whole Talimance myself because it has a very unequal feel for me. It's possible to be upfront with Tali and let her down easy, and she's a strong woman who will eventually realize that she can find someone else.

Maybe i didnt do the right convo choices because she tried to make my Shep pick between her and Miranda, If you let her down easy does she just drop the whole "crush" thing?.

Yeah, not the awesome 35 year old woman. Much of the reason why I like Miranda so much is not there.
Genes will only get you so far. Without Miranda's personal life experience she will turn out quite different.

I love Tali. Bioware has successfully endeared her to me beyond all hope of recovery. Her sidequest reduced me to a pitiful emotional puddle of a human being.

Really? Her sidequest was what actually made me stop liking her. Disclaimer: I don't dislike her. I'm indiferent, so put away your pitchforks.

I like to think that accomplished professional adults in their late twenties/early thirties can handle the situation with some maturity and lack of drama. And Jacob seems to say that the relationship's dead if you ask him about it, and seems to be saying, "if you want that ice queen, you're welcome to TRY."
Also, I hate this "she needs a better man then I" comment, Jacob sounds so Beta Dog saying it. This being the Miranda thread, we've focused most of this conversation around Miranda--it's possible Jacob just didn't ultimately have the self confidence to think things would work out with Miranda. (Other squadmates comments on Jacob: "He doesn't know who he is," and "Events will either destroy him or forge him into a great man" seem to support this.) That + Miranda's fear of emotional intimacy + Lazarus Project eating up all her time...I can see how the relationship ended.

Who says this?
Also, it's sort of strange you can ask Jacob about their relationship, but not Miranda.

Well, part of the problem with this is writing, if you're 'too far' down any romance path Shepard always comes off as a douche. The way to let Tali down easy is when she first brings up the whole syncing suits thing, and she makes it clear that among Quarians it implies a desire for sex. You can say something like, "I'm sorry, Tali, but I just don't feel that way about you."
Her response is adorable, though. "Right, right, it was just...hypothetical. Talking about immune systems and such."

I agree with your second part. The whole portion of him saying "she deserves a better man than I" comment really drives home that.. well, she does - and he's acting pathetic. Again, reinforcing that he wasn't even close to the kind've man she needed outside of her work.
Shepard gives her the whole package. They both share some qualities - mainly, like I said earlier, the rough childhood, etc - and they both know when they need to focus and get the mission done.
