So anyways - was reading up on our lovely social group board's about how they are going to be handling squadmates and love interests in Mass Effect 3 since.. well.. some of them can die in ME2 - and here is my theory;
This game is, to be put bluntly, a cow - that EA is probably going to put as much money into in order to get the most milk out of it.
My theory is this;
Let's say you lose everyone sans one person (Because you need someone to pull you up during the suicide mission - else everyone plus Shepard dies) - should that person, who survived hell with you, be reduced to a cameo?
I think not.
I think what Bioware has planned is this - they are going to develop full dialogue and mission sequences for every character from the original Mass Effect - with the exception of those who didn't score to high on the popularity list.
In example - not many people like Zaeed.. with my theory, he'll probably be reduced to a cameo.
For the other side of the fence - let's take Miranda - who, as is being shown, is a fan favorite - will probably get the whole kit and kaboodle come ME3.
Now, I know Bioware said that they are working on Mass Effect 3 squadmates, but what I'm thinking is not fully developed characters. I think what we will be seeing are "filler" characters - people to fill the spots in for those who die.
Of course, then again, some of the people who live - and are high in popularity - might not be able to join your squad due to other situations.
Let me give some examples.
Wrex - he couldn't join you in ME2 because he is uniting the clans of Tuchanka. Come ME3 - it might be safe to say that he has succeeded in his goal and now you have a krogan army at your disposal. Is Wrex going to join your squad? No - because he has to lead his people, still.
Kaidan - I can see him as one of those "filler" squadmates. The only way I could see him being more is if you had him as a love interest. But, if you were like me, who had him as a bromance - then I don't think he'll be more than the Alliance military representative to help support the war against the Reapers. Hell, I saved his ass on Virmire, got told off on Horizon - and I got no email. Which leads me to believe he won't make much of an appearance for me in ME3.
Ashley - Same boat as Kaidan.
Liara T'Soni - This one is a tricky one for me to try and deduce, personally. Because it has two folds to it. This is what I am thinking. Let us say that the Shadow Broker is, indeed, one individual. I foresee her taking his position wants her revenge on him is through. The reason why I say this is two-fold;
1.) She's beginning to act like her indoctrinated mother - stone cold.
2.) She's nearing her matron stage. I'm thinking - if you romanced her and stayed loyal - she'll eventually mate with you and you also have the Shadow Broker on your side.
If you romanced her and cheated - you'll lose her not only as a friend, but as a very strong ally.
If you never romanced her and befriended her - I think you'll gain a great ally.
With all that's happened between ME1 and ME2 - I don't think Liara will rejoin us back on the Normandy. I think her fate is elsewhere - helping you, like she always has.
Garrus - This man's life, I think, is destined to be at Shepard's side.. love interest or not. He left C-Sec because he learned from your ideals, to be blunt - and has followed you to hell and back. This is a guy I am very positive about making a comeback in ME3. He has nowhere else to go - unless he becomes a Spectre.
Tali - I can see Tali's situation being very similar to Liara's.. in the sense of how you played her out will be critical to what she ends up doing. Her father's spot on the Admirality Board is vacant - and many people have voted for her to take his spot. I believe - if you romanced her, she'll turn down the offer and stay with you.
If you befriended her, she'll take up the offer, and you'll have a quarian fleet with you in the final stand against the Reapers.
Grunt - I really don't know what to think about Grunt. Personally, I think he would return to Tuchanka to serve his clan and help them become glorious - ultimatly becoming Urdnot's champion. Good popularity - on the fence whether or not a comeback is for sure or not.
Jack - On the same boat as Grunt for me. If she's your LI, I think she'll stay with you.. if not, then I don't think she'd stick with you. She's not the kind've person to stay with a group of people for long. Even with Miranda and Jacob leaving Cerberus - I still think she won't let her history go and will eventually leave. Highly popular though for some people, but not as many as Miranda or Tali - whether or not she'll reappear in ME3 is on the fence.
Jacob - Not sure about this guy. I think he's going to end up like Garrus, a fellow gunman who will see the end of the Reaper threat come to fruition. With his resignation from Cerberus (Which I'm assuming he did alongside Miranda) - he has nowhere else to go. I however, don't think he'd be returning as a squadmate - his popularity, or lack thereof, amongst the ME community is probably sealing his fate for him.
Legion - This is the guy I can see leading the "reformed" Geth to battle against the Reapers with Shepard. I think he fits in the same boat right now as Wrex - but with the Geth. Someone needs to lead them - and who else than the unit who fought against the Collector's with the man himself? Very high chance of returning - though as more than a cameo is unsure.
Mordin - I can easily see Mordin becoming the main scientist against the reaper threat. He has the experience and knowledge to do such. I don't Mordin will return as a squadmate, however, I do feel he will have a very flashy cameo sequence - and I personally think he'll be a guy you can go to for those "special" upgrades. I think he'l be making a reappearance.
Thane - I love this, man. He is a total bromance for me alongside Garrus. I wish he could make it into the third game, but I think he will ultimately let his disease take him - and I think his reformed son, if you chose that path, might take his spot. I know a lot of people want to see Thane live for the final game - but I personally think Thane is finally ready to accept his death, and I think he wants it. Like he said, saving the humans from the Collector's will probably be his last mission. As much as I want him in the finale, I ultimately think he will pass.
Samara - A tough one to judge. She makes an oath to you that she will help you see your mission through to the end, and after that she will depart. However, after speaking with her consistently over the course of the game - she eventually tells you that she will stay with you, which leads me to think one thing - she might be a love interest in the final game. I **** you not. She initially rejects you - but over the course of the relationship - she begins to act like she is interested - and the comment about staying with Shepard AFTER the suicide mission gives off that alarm to me. I think she might be a squadmate in ME3 - but can't be sure.
MIRANDA LAWSON - I think 165 pages of theories and love for this woman is enough for us to be sure that this amazing woman will make an appearance in the final game - as more than a cameo. She has nowhere else to go. Her father won't have her back after all that she has done - and she resigned from Cerberus. She is now bound to Shepard, which I have no complaints about. I think she will be a very key asset in the final showdown with the Reapers. I believe over the course of ME3 - we will learn more about her past and eventually given the option to take out her father, a second loyalty quest - if you will. I do believe wholeheartedly that she will make an appearance - due to not only her popularity but also because of how open they leave her story.
My theories.. since we seem to get off-topic about sex, nachos, and chocolate all the time.

Agree or disagree, Miri-maniacs?
