I don't think the CIA allow foreigners in their service...thus she must be American. In the old days they didn't even allow American Jews to be in the CIA.

Well, as you've no doubt noticed, I'm quite the Anglo-phile myself.

Which makes this a good a time as to go for the trifecta of UK armed forces:

Air Marshal Dowding, representing the Royal Force. He hopes Miranda is treated better in ME3 then he was treated after winning the Battle of Britain.

TBCH, the media portrayal of intelligence services is so fast and loose they could've let this one slide ;)

Nonsense the CIA has tons of people with foreign origins on their payroll.

Heck we put a German in charge of National Security for awhile.

Someone posted a link to the interior ME: Redemption Miranda earlier.

So more Galaxy-y, or Yvonne-y?

Hmm..a bit of both I think. Obviously the art style brings it closer to Galaxy's look, but at the same time it bears a strong resemblance to ME2 Miranda/Yvonne.

On a related note, I thought about taking a pic of the early takes on Miri's alt costume from the CE art book but I'm not sure if I should post it here or not. I don't want us getting into trouble for something like that, what do you think Com?

Is it copyrighted or inappropriate?

It's not inappropriate, it's the copyright I'm concerned about. I'm not sure how strict the rules are about taking one photo of the book but I'm thinking it'd be safer not to post it. It's just something I don't think we've seen posted on here yet.

Well, a quick google search for "Miranda concept art Mass Effect 2" didn't turn up anything, so there's probably a Darned Good Reason no one has pirated that all over the internets.

It also makes me realize how relatively civil these forums are compared to some parts of the internet. I'll be very upset if Miranda's not back because some random-guy on some far-flung board of the internet didn't think the facial scan was very good.

Its a nice alt outfit though, completely black, a lot more revealing than the one she wears now. A fair bit of cleavage, some tum and unless my eyes deceive me, a cheeky bit of thigh too (although that could be the Cerberus yellow, it's almost the same colour as skin in the book). It's probably better they changed it though, she already gets flamed enough for being so-called "fanservice."

Cracks me up, the hate for Miranda sounds exactly the same as the hate for Ash. I guess subtlety goes over some peoples heads. It is Ironic that both ended up being my male Shep's LI's. I wonder what will happen when the meet in ME3.

I would so laugh if they became friends and dumped my Shepard. :D

And they would totally start making out. While Shepard could watch.

But yeah, the human squadmates never seem as popular as the alien ones. Proof that designing a universally attractive (CGI) body is easy, but doing the same for a face is hard.

Also, finally updated the front page with the "Night, Night" pics.

Does anybody know if Miranda can survive if you pick her as your biotic specialist? I've got a feeling she won't but I want to hear all the Miri dialogue possible. I'm not trying it if it kills her though, no siree!

She doesn't. I've played through it with my MaleShep and he picks her up and carries her through the door. One of the squad does kark it though - Jack in my case.
(Then again, I was trying to get either her or Zaeed killed on that bit).

For any that are interested, just finished the 2nd chapter.

Interested every time. I'm commenting as I read. Please note that any suggestions are just that. It's your story, if you don't agree with my comments, feel free to ignore them. Also note that I have a history as a book reviewer. I don't pull my punches, but if I say something is good, I really mean it.

(1) "Unethical behaviour". It isn't quite clear what you mean by that. If you mean making advances, as it seems, "unethical" would be the wrong term to use, as it points to a certain philosophic conception of morality which doesn't necessarily have anything to do with sex. Perhaps something like "being too forward would be met with a swift response" would be more approriate.

(2) You paint a very good picture of Miranda as a prodigy. I like that. You also make very good use of SF concepts and speculative technological advances. As I see it, the ME universe as presented by Bioware needs more science infused into the fiction.

(3) Very good explanation of your Shepard being a biotic.

(4) Nice conversation between Miranda and Jacob. Curt and to the point, with just a hint of something more appearing in a word or half-sentence here and there. You notice they have a history - the details of which remain unclear - in what is not said. I always like conversations where you notice the characters speak in their own context instead of for the benefit of the reader.

(5) Miranda's reaction " A traitor! Here! I won’t fail. Not when I’m this close! " - seems a bit too wordy for a thought. Maybe a bit stereotypical as well. Some kind of mental curse would IMO be more appropriate, followed by something like "The surprise faded quickly from her mind, replaced instantly by several tactical options she could take. Choosing one of them, she tapped int the medical suite....". This would also be more suited to Miranda's character. I can't see her enraged in such a situation for more than an instant. The wording may need some more work, but you get the idea.

(6) Nice detail with the tubes and needles. The game doesn't show such, but it's completely convincing. As are, btw, all your other scene expansions and the referral to ME1 events.

(7) nitpicky correction in grammar: it should be "a LOKI mech" that Shepard kills when he gets up.

(8) It seems strange calling a destroyed mech a "corpse". Don't have a better suggestion, though.

(9) It's a common mistake in game-inspired fiction to use game ruleset terms as part of the story. That spoils the mood very efficiently. Particularly bad is the use of a game's class names together with the game's ability names in one sentence. It screams "this is game fiction". You don't want that. I'd avoid the use of class and ability names if at all possible, and if you can't avoid it, only if it's totally clear that the term is meant in a generic way. For instance, you shouldn't refer to a character as an infiltrator if he's not actually infiltrating anything at that time (reverting to the generic use of the term instead of the specialized use for the game ruleset). In this case, someting like "covert operations training" reflects better what a character living in the ME universe would probably say. Capitalizing ability names is also not a good idea, as is putting their use as "use X". Instead, for the Tactical Cloak, it's be better to say that he "cloaked himself" or "threw a ??? cloak around himself", with "???" being an adjective pointing to an in-world explanation of the ability, which I either can't remember at this time, or which doesn't exist. In general, I'd preferrably use verbs to describe what in the game is "use ability X".

(10) nitpicky grammar correction: it should be "Explains why I feel
like sh*t". Or do you want to imply that he feels very much improved
now? Seems slightly implausible.

(11) Capitalizing things points to specialized use of a term. Example: "Recon Hood". Is that intended? Feels somewhat implausible to me. Also "onmi-tool" is generic name and should not be capitalized.

(12) End of Shepards scene. "Son of a ****". I don't get what's intended by this thought here. Who does he mean?

(13) Very well done action scenes overall. The mood and the tension come across nicely. I almost couldn't stop reading to write this.

(14) Jacob's mental reaction to the mech attack: funny, while completely appropriate. This is the way I like humor.

(15) Nitpicky grammar corrrection. In the first Jacob/Shepard dialog, it should be "Things must me worse..."

(16) Factual question: Is "KIA" an acronym used by the military to indicate someone killed? I know "MIA" but have never seen "KIA". If it's not a known acronym, I'd rather use "dead". IIRC, the game does, too.

(17) The same scene: "dark energy" is called dark for a reason: you can't see it. The blue glow of biotics must be something else. IIRC the game does not present an in-world explanation. It may need some thought.

(18) LOKI mechs are described as clumsy. The game shows them so, but realistically, if they're used as security troops and can shoot at people, they shouldn't be, except, maybe, *in comparison* with experienced soldiers.

(19) Nitpicky spelling correction: It's "Elanus Haliat".

All in all, excellent stuff. Reading a story on a screen feels very different from reading it in a book - I have a vague feeling that some of the shorter scenes could use some more detail. But excellent nonetheless, you catch the characters and the mood of the scenes nicely, and it feels almost more real as an SF story than the in-game scenes (I did mention that I consider the science in the fiction gets neglected in the ME games, didn't I?).  I'm looking forward to the next chapter. And now, I'm glad to close my reviewer's eye and enjoy it again just as a story.

Ieldra - KIA is a (mostly) military acronym/slang for Killed In Action. As both Jacob and Shep have military backgrounds, it makes sense for Jacob to tell Shep that he was KIA - it rings true as squaddie to squaddie talk.
