Or Infiltrator, they also have AI Hacking.

I wouldn't do it on a high difficulty though... Maybe on a low one just for lulz

That was my intention. Go on normal or something where they dont have defenses. Maybe pick the area AI hack + Area dominate for extra hilarity.

It works extremely well on Insanity difficulty. All you need to do is tear down the protection of 1 enemy and that 1 enemy will tear through everything else. Its basically a domino effect. Toss in a Combat Drone and they'll often have their backs exposed to your squad for most of the fight.

Not worth it. I beat the game with engineer on insanity and the best bonus power would be reave.

With Area Reave and Area Overload you have AOE powers against any defense in the game. Though I personally also maxed Incinerate (AOE Incineration Blast). For some weird reason it just seems to burn through armor better than Reave (maybe its just me).

Key to engineer, though, really is proper use of the Combat Drone. You need to learn to use it to draw enemy fire and lockdown tougher enemies.

If you're under heavy fire behind cover, for instance, and you either want to move to a different position or have time to aim out of cover just summon the drone at your feet and it will automatically move out of cover and toward the nearest enemy drawing their fire.

If you want to kill someone like a heavy weapon enemy behind cover from a perch that is unreachable and far away all you have to do is spawn the drone behind them (which happens whenever you aim at an enemy and activate the drone). The drone will immediately spark attack the guy behind cover making him stand up, at which point you blast him with either overload or reave.

If you have a big enemy like an Ymir mech or a Krogan, summon the drone at them to hold their aggro (just make sure you're farther away from them than the drone is). As long as you have your class ability maxed (hopefully to demolisher), you'll be able to resummon the drone faster than they can kill it. You're not going to have enough time to blast out any other abilities while your drone is occupying the big baddie, so you'll have to rely on guns and teamates to take him out. That should be easy enough, however, as you and your teamates won't be directly under fire from the big enemy. This tactic is pretty hilarious against scions. You can actually melee them 2 to 3 times before you have to back off with the drone still holding their aggro.

And the basic tactic of popping a drone off in the middle of a group of enemies to move them out of position should be your bread and butter. Just liberally fire off Overload/Reave/Incinerate or Submachine gun as breaks in enemy fire abate.

Oh and don't bother with the explosive drone. It's not worth it. The drone doesn't die fast enough against the vast majority of enemies to outdo the DPS you'll get from the attack drone. Just remember, the drone fires immediately when summoned, so the attack drone will always do at least 40 damage to any sort of defense or health. The explosive drone, on the other hand, will only do piddling shield damage and won't touch health at all with its basic attack, and its death pulse is too situational. Trust me, you'll find the attack drone finishing off the health of a guy you just Reaved more satisfying than watching the explosive drone just spark stunning that guy while you wait for your abilities to recharge so you can Reave him again.

Eh. Dominate sounds okay. I've never played with it, but I'll try it out sometime.

Reave huh?

My dumb but picked energy drain thinking that would be useful *sigh*

I've thought about this. For extra lolz bring along either Morinth or Tali/Legion on your missions (depends on whether you are going to be fighting synthetics or organics obviously). You'll get two pets, which will be ridiculous.

I question the above poster who said that assault drone is better than explosive drone. The Assault Drone does 40 damage per hit. It attacks once per 3 seconds. It attacks immediatelyto begin with, so if it is alive for 6 seconds, it will do more than the 100 damage from explosive drone to its target. First off, I find that the drone frequently will die sooner than 6 seconds. Frequently a bunch of enemies will focus fire on it and destroy it. Secondly, a well placed Explosive Drone will be reasonably close to multiple enemies. The explosive radius is 6 meters, which is pretty large. Even if the Explosive Drone only hits 2 enemies (which should be pretty frequent), the Attack Drone would have to be alive for 12 seconds to equal the damage. That will rarely happen. And if you can get the drone near more than 2 enemies, the explosive drone is clearly superior. So IMO it depends on the battle. If you can get the Drone close to a couple enemies, I would say the Explosive Drone is better. If you can't, then the Assault Drone is better. Unless, of course, you are fighting shielded enemies, in which case the Explosive Drone will do damage before it dies as well, in which case they are probably about equal, even if you have the Explosive Drone near only one enemy.

I assume dominate and AI hacking only work on enemies with all defenses gone.

Yes, but its not that big of a deal really. Just take down the defenses of one enemy and use Dominate/AI Hacking. It will draw pretty much all fire away from your party (allowing your party to just shoot everything down very quickly). Your hacked/dominated enemy will also do some nice damage itself before it goes down. Lastly, the AI Hack/Dominate is effectively a one-power-kill on the enemy you use it on, because it will almost assuredly get destroyed by enemy fire.

An Engineer with a Combat Drone, AI Hacking, and Dominate can REALLY keep fire away from your party almost constantly, while forcing enemies out of cover. This will allow you to just pummel everything with fire. Throw on an Assault Rifle or a Sniper Rifle on your Engineer, along with an appropriate squad ammo power for the mission from an NPC, and your party will be awesome.

It doesn't really matter that you need to take down defenses to use dominate or ai hacking. On higher levels, this just means you need to focus a few powers on an enemy before throwing out the dominate/ai hacking.

Hilarity ensues when harbinger takes over a dominated collector - the dominate holds for its full duration and he chews up the other collectors

i always thought that once the Harbringer resumes control of your dominated collector it overrides your dominate... so usually i dominate the collector drones instead of collertor assasins as I noticed that the assasins usually get taken over by harbringer. very interesting if true.

Dominate is fun and with the combat drone the engineer has a really fun time commanding essentially 4 party members instead of 2.

One thing to note about dominate is that the actual effective time isn't as long as AI Hack. AI hack instantly turns the geth/mech on his allies. When an enemy is hit with dominate, it has to recover from a second or 2 stun before it turns on its allies.

Someone mentioned how harbinger, if he takes over a dominated collector, will attack his allies for the remainder of the time. This actually also works with cryo. If harbinger takes over a frozen enemy he'll stay frozen. Its really funny when this happens to a collector frozen by avalanche.

I suppose it must be really humiliating for a reaper to come out of dark space to dominate a collector only to find himself dominated by Shepard's ability.

Enhanced dominate has a long duration and it gives your pet a 500 pts barrier that makes it quite durable and because most of the time your pet will be among your enemies you can also detonate his barrier with a warp to clear the whole floor.

Dominate is great fun and an excellent bonus power for crowd controlling classes like the adept or the engineer.

I take it as a bonus talent for a sentinel. It is better then i expected it.The sentinel could strip defenses fast anyway, then follow with dominate, and you have a additional squadmember, and your squad could concentrate their fire on the rest.
And nothing is more fun then two flamethrower vorchas that fight eachother.

If you want, you could take a look at either my Engineer or Infiltrator guides as they both have some information on Dominate and how to use it.

Good idea. I wanted to do a playthrough with both AI hacking and dominate, right now I'm trying an infiltrator with dominate (when I did engineer insanity I took reave), in part for roleplaying reasons - for me dominate seemed to fit better with an infiltrator theme (even though it's a biotic ability). Only the first skill rank right now (I thought incinerate rank 4 more important), but it was certainly helpful in the Mordin recruitment mission (even without the dominate effect, the stun is useful for "buying time" when dealing with krogan with no more armor).

Also, because my style of play on previous playthroughs tended to be power-intensive rather than weapons-based (especially the engineer insanity run, with lots of drone usage), I wanted to do infiltrator to help encourage more weapons use. That's just me, though.

I'm playing through on Veteran w/ Dominate on my Engineer and it's fun. Most of the enemies in the game are organic, so Dominate is useful like 80% of the time. Plus I just enjoy being able to go through a room of enemies w/ my Engineer and never having to fire a shot.

As you note, in-game, the description of warp ammo is a biotic power. So get off your soapbox, a mad Batarian wants it...

Having imported an adept save game, and with comments with the IM about noticing upgrades, the whole Lazarus project thing, from a storytelling point of view justifying not only changing class but taking a class with one bonus biotic ability (last remaining one/mutated power/whatever) seems to make "sense". I mean, I took reave with engineer and energy drain with adept, if I wanted to be "pure" I'd do the default Shepard face and choose soldier with no bonus skill, and have less fun. No thanks.
