So far the best build for insanity that I have found is this:

Main char: Sentinel.
Bonus ability: Reave.

Basically the idea is this:  Do not spend any points in throw or warp (I'll get to that later).  Max reave, max tech armor and make it power armor, max overload, max passive ability for quicker cooldowns, and throw the rest into cryo.

The squad: Garrus and Miranda.
Have Garrus get group armor piecring rounds (very important), max overload, and max concusive shot (i find it better than Garrus's passive for more weapon damage). Have Miranda max warp, overload, and her passive ability to buff the group.

This way at any givin time all your weapons have armor piercing, Miranda has warp agianst barrier and armor, Garrus has concusive shot agianst barrier, all three chars have overload agianst shields and geth, and the main char has reave agianst barrier/armor/health.

The best weapon I have found so far for the main char is the geth pulse rifle, but I do switch to the hand cannon for certain baddies with high armor (or a heavy weapon).

Usually I have Miranda using the hand cannon, and Garrus using the sniper rifle (the mantis, not the viper).  However for things like husks I'll have Garrus switch to an assult rifle.

This has made insanity the easiest so far, if you have a better build or group set up I'll be glad to give it a try!

Can you curve Reave like you do warp?

No, it hits them immediatly. However, I have found that even is just a slight bit of them are exposed I can hit that with Reave and then they go into the pain animation. (Crouch down, then raise into the air). Once they raise into the air they are a pretty nice target to fill full of holes.

I'm still on my first playthrough but I just got the Justicars loyalty so I may respec to get it instead of warp. What kind of cooldown does it have?

How well does an Engineer handle insanity? It seems as if you could just spawn your drone over and over, keeping all fire off of you and allowing you to whittle down enemies at your leisure.

Reave has the same cooldown as Warp.

Not really, enemies flank quit a bit and the drone doesn't last too long.  At least from my experience.

If the drone dies so easily, wouldn't the exploding drone be even better?

Some more quick info about Reave: If it hits on health you get the health drain and the enemy will likewise drain health (and enter the pain animation). If it hits barrier/armor it instantly takes a good chunk off of it (as if it were hit by warp) but you do not get the health increase and the enemy will not go into the animation.

I wish it would work, but on insanity I have not had good experiences with drones.  One of the main reasons I went with sentinel instead of engineer for trying to find the best insanity build.

Usually it happens like this:  Use drone, takes up a cooldown, drone dies...ok I'm still on cooldown and it did hardly any damage.  Tons of enemies still up...ok another drone...dies..still on cooldown....repeat.  The enemies on insane do not just sit there and wait for your powers either, they will flank the crap out of you, so those missed cooldowns is the difference between life and death.

Cool. Right now I have been using warp ammo, but I don't have a full fledged biotic in my party so I don't really get to reap all the benefits, but I spam Warp, so Reave sounds like a better alternative, especially for insanity.

One more question about Reave. I have heard people say that Reave sucks against mechs. Is this true? I know you don't get the health boost, but does it at least do decent damage?

Sucks agianst mechs is correct.  Fortunatly with the above build you have 3 overloads :)  However it is still great for taking armor off of the big mechs.

With my Soldier build; I had Legion and Thane with me on the final mission. Thane for warp adn Legion for the Widow Sniper Rifle. But Legion's attack drone distracted Harbinger enough for me to take him down before he knocks me back or tries and flanks me. Hit Harbinger with Heavy warp, Attack Drone for a distraction and then just blast him with Inferno ammo with my assault rifle, biggest threat is out. It made my insanity playthrough a breeze.

jgarcia,

I agree drone can have its uses in insanity, but for battles where I could use drone I could have used something else and have done it more quickly. For large battles I found the drone, at least for me, was not really cutting it. For Harbinger I just have Miranda use warp, garrus use concusive shot, then I just shoot it a couple times and the barrier is gone. Once barrier is gone use reave and have garrus fire his sniper at it. That'll kill the Harbinger pretty quick.

I know it sounds like a long time with all those powers being used, but really its only like 2 seconds and one and a half of those seconds you are behind cover :)

I'm just about going to the final mission with my soldier with...

hardened adrenaline, inferno ammo, commando, 3lvl fortification, and 3lvl disruptor ammo.

no real set squad mates yet, but the most i die on a stage is once and i learn from that mistake.

I went with Warp Ammo. At least that way I don't have to put points into warp.

I tried warp ammo once for my soldier.  i found that it didnt seem to do as much damage as inferno ammo does to health and armor.  im sure it does more on barriors, but  i stuck with inferno ammo

Is it just me or does Inferno Ammo do good damage against Shields.

warp is probably the best overall skill in the game. It's great vs armor, health, and barriers and not bad vs shields not to mention it can be fired then go right back to cover and the recharge isn't bad at all with the passive cooldown skill. warp ammo is great for an adapt because it's adds damage to just about all weapon attacks but in no way replaces warp.

Reave, in my opinion, is an improved warp.

Heavy Reave does less damage than Heavy Warp on Insanity.
