I think people are over thinking the affect that the suicide mission will have on ME3. Obviously if you died then your character dosnt carry over, and someone new takes your place. Most likely not a clone, probably a new spectre, alliance, or Cerberus. The faction you came from will probably be listed under your profile creation. The storys would just be differnt in the begining, for an example the way Dragon age starts. The stories have the same plot just go about it differntly. Bioware will most likely also let you choose to use a new character or shepard if this is the first one you played (Which would wierd if you waited till the last game to start playing the series) Bioware will probably have two canon stories one with shepard and one with out.
The level cap for shepard which explains why your not the badass you were in ME2 anymore will be something obvious, like you went to jail or something, or they might let you import you rank, but ever 5 levels will equal one level in ME3 simply showing theres alot more shepard needs to learn before he takes on the reapers.
I just think people worry to much, the suicide mission is a basic and simple story telling device to open new windows, it is easy to build multible stories around it.
Over thinking
