I have an idea. While naming your Shepard or Femshep whatever first name you like adds customization to the game, it seems to remove credability from its characters. Honestly, remember in ME1, when Ashley would call you "skipper?" Or Commander. Why not John? As you talk to her more and more, it becomes painful to see all of the effort Bioware had to put into avoiding your first name. This is only one situation, too. There are many sections of the story in which this is true.

For one thing, it totally undermines the feeling of building a rapport with any of your characters, much less your LI. Remember when you and soulmate are cruising around town and she just keeps referring to you by your last name? No you don't, because it is awkward and impersonal in that context. Same goes here.

I understand that making your own character and living your own story is the entire point of the game, and doing just that is probably the most enjoyable experience to be had in any current-gen RPG. However, consider the gains to be had in simply having a standard name for the male and female Shepards. No more awkward nicknames, weird workarounds, or just plain disappointing "Commander" from people you just went to hell and back with. I'm not saying that appearance or any other aspect of the characters need be restricted, but simply keeping a standard first name would work wonders to alleviate these concerns.

Thoughts?

i really dont care for the first name, so im all for having people call me john, makes our virtual relationships better executed if we arent on a last name basis forever.

I don't mind the awkward nicknames or weird workarounds. At least it's not like DAO where they pick your last name, then spend the entire game ignoring it anyway (Mage Origin!!!).

Most of my friends refer to me by nickname or my last name, so I don't mind.

Me either, i actually liked it in Kotor when everyone called you the "Mysterious Stranger".  It's cliche i know but that's part of what made it funny.

He is my Shepard, there are many like him, but this one is mine. Without me, my Shepard is useless. Without my Shepard, I am useless.

I'm tired of games that let you choose your name. It makes things seem much more real when they have a name assigned to them so the characters can actually use it, rather than a title or something else. This wasn't such a problem back in the day when RPGs had little to no voice acting. The first time it really showed up and started annoying me was in Final Fantasy 10, and it just sort of built from there. At least there is a name in Mass Effect that they can call you...but it is rather odd that you call basically everyone by their first names, but everyone else, no matter how intimate their relationship is to you, still call you by your last name.

Let them choose your name, and the next thing you know, they're choosing your dialogue, alignment, class, powers and personality.
You give an inch and they take a mile. Let's take a stand here and now and prevent the re-emergence of Tidus in video games.

I agree. It would be nice if BioWare gave us a list of pre-recorded first names that we would pick. Having said that,  I'm fine with the whole "Shepard" or "Commander" thing, because Shepard is the commanding officer so calling him/her Commander or Shepard is a sign of respect.

Finding workaround nicknames like Skipper is fine. I also don't really mind having people call me Shepard, or Shep. It's a bit of a unique name really, and I've run into a few people who would rather be called or would be called something other than their first name. I remember a girl named Dominique in school and we would all refer to her as Duffy because that was her actual last name and there were already 4 other Dominique's that the class new. My father would also rather be known by his middle name than his first name (and I don't blame him).

If you have a unique first name for your Shep, then that's cool. I guess one thing they can try to do is add in a little more text to show they recognize what the first name of your Shepard is. Whether it be dog tags, your armor, a belt, the computer, whatever else as long as they show your first name other than in the stat screen would be nice.

I like to think that my Sheps just happen to loathe their first names. And "Shepard" is infinitely more badass than any first name.

If it really bothers you, just make their first name Shepard; everyone calls you by your first name, so problem solved

Hell, most of my friends call me by my last name anyway. I didn't think it was that strange of a custom.

Not really all for first names, considering that there would be idiots that would type in "BYTFADTDGSGDTGETGSDGT" or random gibberish as the first names just for the LOLZ.

Truth. It could be worse, my FemShep's first name is Commander.
