My Shepard's first name is Shepard, so it all works out.

Your Shepard's parents are dicks.

Truth. It could be worse, my FemShep's first name is Commander.

That one made me lol.

As respectful and or awesome Shepard may be as a last name and/or title, let's be realistic. Nobody wants their girlfriend or boyfriend to call them by their last name. It's dumb. Obviously Shepard or Commander are appropriate in many situations, but please have the sense to recognize that there are times in Mass Effect 1 and 2 when first names are the only thing that really fits.

When someone is trying to really connect to you and make a good point, they will often use your first name. What I'm saying is that this would really improve the narrative framework and the impact of the conversations if all Shepards had the same first name. If naming is so important to everyone, we could make their middle names or something, or their nicknames. The first name would really help things be more credible though.

I have an idea. While naming your Shepard or Femshep whatever first name you like adds customization to the game, it seems to remove credability from its characters. Honestly, remember in ME1, when Ashley would call you "skipper?" Or Commander. Why not John? As you talk to her more and more, it becomes painful to see all of the effort Bioware had to put into avoiding your first name. This is only one situation, too. There are many sections of the story in which this is true.

For one thing, it totally undermines the feeling of building a rapport with any of your characters, much less your LI. Remember when you and soulmate are cruising around town and she just keeps referring to you by your last name? No you don't, because it is awkward and impersonal in that context. Same goes here.

I understand that making your own character and living your own story is the entire point of the game, and doing just that is probably the most enjoyable experience to be had in any current-gen RPG. However, consider the gains to be had in simply having a standard name for the male and female Shepards. No more awkward nicknames, weird workarounds, or just plain disappointing "Commander" from people you just went to hell and back with. I'm not saying that appearance or any other aspect of the characters need be restricted, but simply keeping a standard first name would work wonders to alleviate these concerns.

Thoughts?

Wow, you're really reaching, aren't you?

See my previous post: Implementing this will be impossible because of idiots typing gibberish when creating their characters' first names.

What I'm saying is that everyone should just be John or Jane Shepard, but customizing the looks would still be possible. It would make the conversations more realistic and engaging, and really, does anyone care about what their first name is? It doesn't do anything as it is

I like to think that my Sheps just happen to loathe their first names. And "Shepard" is infinitely more badass than any first name.

There is a guy on Stargate: Alantis named John Sheppard, except his last name is spelled different. But yea

That Sheppard is also a rather charismatic leader and great in a fight too, there's something with that name I think.

Damn...now I kinda want to make a Joe Flanigan look-alike Shepard

I gave my Shepard a wonky first name (Metcalf) so it's kind of like a Fox Mulder effect... "I even made my parents call me Mulder".

That explains it for me and is sufficient enough for me. You're making a big deal over nothing.

I like my FemShep being referred to by last name. Gives her a superiority complex. :3

Can we at least agree that there are times when first names should be used and it is awkward that they are not?

Because not everybody sticks with the default "John Shepard" name, especially people who've watched too much Stargate Atlantis and keep expect Wraith to pop up and start trying to conscript him into their own private missions.

To speak a name, it has to be voice-acted, but they can't get the voice-actors to speak every single name combination that is possible. What about foreign names? Chinese names? Silly names that people give their characters because they want to be space-elves? I think there may be some in-game written references to your first name (if not, there should be. If Baldurs Gate can do it, so can ME) but vocalisation of your name is impossible.

I have always hoped that at the end of Mass Effect 3, Shepherd goes absolutely crazy when he realises he is never called by his first name, and he then goes on a massive rant, and the credits roll in just as he is about to say his first name.

I name my Shepard "Hieronymous", 'cos then it really makes sense that he makes everyone just call him Shepard. One could also use "Endeavour", if ones is a fan of the late great John Thaw.

I tried with the first game. It's simply not possible, you can't properly shape the head and the eyes are all wrong.

I haven't tried with the second game.

LOL:lol:

it depends on one playthrough i just used my first name, and made choices in the game that i would make in those situations

and in other playthroughs i just used whatever random name came into my head

What I'm saying is that there should not be a choice to change the name. It's not like having a changeable first name really makes a difference in the game, so all females should be Jane and all males should be John. The way it is now, we can name them but those names are never brought up in any way. This way, first names would actually matter. It's not like naming Shepard is really a huge customizable thing either, so there would be a large gain with essentially no drawback.

Does the OP propose a solution? Because if not, this thread is stupid. And since there is no preferable practical solution, this thread is indeed stupid.

Suppose the characters prefer his last name over his first.

Actually, a lot of people refer me by my last name in real life. So it's not much of a problem for me.

Well, I liked it as Thane started to call me "siha". It's fine if the normal crewmembers just call me Shepard or Commander. But I want little sweet names that makes it feel more intimate with the ones you have a romance going on with. Doesn't have to be the first name I chose.

This makes me want to name my next Shepard "El Capitan De Awesome."
