A lot of people are called by their last names, even by loved ones, so it's really no big deal.

Can we at least agree that there are times when first names should be used and it is awkward that they are not?

Why would we agree to that?  Are we on some kinda first-name basis or something?

People call me by my last name so it isnt really that strange to me.

And you can tell things like "skipper"  and "commander" turn more into nicknames when talking to squad mates then an actual rank or slang for a rank, atleast that what it seemed like to me.

Well, I liked it as Thane started to call me "siha". It's fine if the normal crewmembers just call me Shepard or Commander. But I want little sweet names that makes it feel more intimate with the ones you have a romance going on with. Doesn't have to be the first name I chose.

I strongly agree with the OP concerning this and the above quote, naming your character is fine and dandy when everything in a game was text, but now with voice overs it's just getting impersonal. I don't see any harm in BioWare giving the main character a default name you can't change when you can already change his/her appearance.

And it does feel awkward when your LI is getting personal and calls you freakin' Commander or Shepard. At least with Thane and Ashley you get a more personal nickname. I would much rather have Kaidan call my Shepard  'Jane' once you enter the romance stage instead of her last name, then being able to name her whatever I want.

Does the OP propose a solution? Because if not, this thread is stupid. And since there is no preferable practical solution, this thread is indeed stupid.

Suppose the characters prefer his last name over his first.

I'm the OP. In the interest of defending this thread against these spurrious accusations, I will responsd. All male Shepards should be John and all females should be Jane, without a way to change this. It would make it so that as relationships are built with with the crew, it would actually show

Because not everybody sticks with the default "John Shepard" name, especially people who've watched too much Stargate Atlantis and keep expect Wraith to pop up and start trying to conscript him into their own private missions.

To speak a name, it has to be voice-acted, but they can't get the voice-actors to speak every single name combination that is possible. What about foreign names? Chinese names? Silly names that people give their characters because they want to be space-elves? I think there may be some in-game written references to your first name (if not, there should be. If Baldurs Gate can do it, so can ME) but vocalisation of your name is impossible.

What I'm saying is that there should not be a choice to change the name. It's not like having a changeable first name really makes a difference in the game, so all females should be Jane and all males should be John. The way it is now, we can name them but those names are never brought up in any way. This way, first names would actually matter. It's not like naming Shepard is really a huge customizable thing either, so there would be a large gain with essentially no drawback.

I dunno. It seems fitting to me. I mean, we're a military man/woman. My squad-mates calling me 'Shepard' has a tone of camraderie and respect to it. Everyone else calls me "Commander" because they're afraid I'll shoot them in the head if they don't address me respectfully.

Besides, you could argue that your appearance adds nothing to the game, so why be able to customise that, too? And it's not like your background/history adds that much, except a few slightly different conversation options.

In fairness, it probably took the devs like 5 minutes to implement a customisable first name. That's 5 minutes well spent.

Well, I agree, it is pointless to give your character a first name if it will never actually be referred to. But its a bit late to change it now.

I actually quite like the whole name scenario. Everyone calls you Commander most of the time, so it made me happy when squad mates or LIs called me just 'Shepard'. It seemed to show that a wall had been broken between the characters, and they weren't just a soldier under your command but an equal that you trusted. A friend.

It kinda reminded me of Alien too, because Ripley is known by her last name. Only once in the quadrilogy is she referred to by her first name (I think, might be wrong).

Well he coulda been named Dash or Jet or Lance some other uninspiring, dissapointing name that woulda had me cringing the entire game. Just plain Shepard is fine with me.

I wish they would have allowed middle names since they put in first names. I was intent on naming my character James T. Shepard, but alas I have settled for Kirk Shepard. Hi-ho-silver off to tame the blue space women.

There was a game once, it might have been Black and White, where they had a list of fairy normal common names, and if you'd entered as your profile name one of those, it would sometimes talk to you. Like if you'd been playing for 4 hours it might go "Take a rest, David."

Perhaps BioWare could do something similar, and if your first name is on the list, you might get a line of dialouge with your LI that goes "Isn't it about time you called me [NAME]?". Just as a nice easter egg maybe?

I would object to John/Jane. Painfully generic.

In fact, everyone would object to something.

If you want something more tender for the LI's to use, try "dear". Well, except Jack, Jack can use "hey you".

Actually when comparing it to other Sci-fi series it's not that odd.

Farscape is probably the best example, John Crichton the main character is more often than not called by his surname rather than his first name. Stargate also does this alot as well, O'Neill, Sheppard, Rush, Greer, etc. Red Vs Blue refers to the characters ONLY by their last names: Church, Tucker, Grif, Simmons, etc.

I think it more has to do with if you have a badass last name or not.

I never had a problem, as a military man I went years with people just calling me my last name. It seemed normal. Nowadays it would be odd since I have been out for a few years but not overly terrible.

Fair, but not preferable. I'd rather have my Shepard use the name I give him, even if it's only on paper.

Using first names isn't indicative of affection.

My parents and complete strangers both call me by my first name. Unless you're telling me they both hate, or love me, then you're either very mean or very kind.

Likewise it'd probably be the same for Shepard, but since he's no mere ordinary civilian like myself, and someone of rank and prestige, people would defer to his last name, just in case.

It's the way you say it, I guess.
