Lots of people use that as proof that Wardens can't hold titles (except Alistair and maybe you) but she was also stripped of her title or else her descendents wouldn't be merchants. She was put into the Wardens as it was something for her to do that didn't involve planning a coup (and she was too dangerous to just allow to walk away) and seemed harmless since they viewed it as defunct. Of course, Sophia changed that...One example is Sophia, who was put into the Wardens to (IIRC) take her out of the running for the throne or something.
I think it may be fair to say that this is like the point we discussed a few weeks ago about the GWs not intervening in politics: Surely it depends on the culture and the time. Obviously Sophia's case was sui generis to Ferelden in that she was a viable candidate to the throne and in compelling her to become a GW, Arland was probably hoping she would not pass the joining and thus he would not have to address the issue any further... However, as you say, in counterposition to that is Alistair's situation where at one point even Riordan, who is his snr in the GWs asks him, "Shall I address you as Your Majesty?". Add to this the scene in Awakenings where you reassure Sigrun that even though as member of the Legion of the Dead she had to renounce all possessions the same is not the case for GWs. On balance, therefore, I would say that GWs do not necessarily have to renounce titles and possessions (and really titles are nothing but possessions).
