**** the readers. Just write! Also apparently I write like Dan Brown. FML

If you had Dan Brown's money, I'm sure you'd make yourself write like Dan Brown... :D

The irony is, if I made a conscious effort to do so I'd probably end up drinking a lot. And then I would end up writing like Faulkner or Joyce and nobody would buy my books and I would die penniless and liverless BUT AT LEAST I WOULD HAVE MY SELF-RESPECT!

A different piece was analyzed to be like Chuck Palahniuk. Good God what am I doing!?

Oh god today seems to be 'misunderstand everything I say' day *sigh*. I'm not suggesting you should write like that or that you do write like that but... As you say, you have your self-respect intact .

And my second piece also said I wrote like Chuck Palahniuk. I'm not doing it again. Knowing my luck I'd get some trash fiction person. :?

LOL no don't worry I wasn't offended. I was just playing up the self-hatred for laughs is all. I don't take this thing seriously.

Also other totally scientific tests have revealed that I write like Stephen King and Raymond Chandler. So it's not all soul-destroying.

At least no one's gotten Stephanie Meyer yet. The minute someone does my faith in humanity will take a hit. Stupid random website.

I think you can game it. I'm pretty sure I got Palahniuk for that particular piece because one of the characters just won't stop cursing (he's got a potty mouth, ok?). I'll bet if you just commit to using the word "chagrin" way more than any human being could ever have a reason to, you'll get Ms. Meyers.

One chapter gave me Lovecraft (huh?)

Another JK Rowling (I've never read any of her books)

And the last, Shakespeare. I was going to stop there, but tried one more from a different story. It gave me Joyce. I can live with that. :D

I doubt it. I just entered part of Twilight and got Dan Brown. Now that we know JKR is an option someone should enter part of Harry Potter.

Edit: Hey, I just did and she does write like herself! God to know. Posted Image

Depends on WHAT fan fic.... Harry Potter fan fic!!! Yes THAT sucks... Because the story is allready made up! You can't remake the story in whatever image you want it.... However... Mass Effect and Dragon age!!! You can have your story without it destroying these to games... You don't NEED a shep charakter in mass effect story's. And what about the PC in Dragon Age... Everybody have their own mind about the hero from Dragon Age.... Fan fic only suck's if you can't write or read I'll say!

Well it is for me, but is that okay for people reading?

It is if they have any taste at all...  :innocent:

For serious:  It's a hard question.  I do amateur performance in my historical re-creation group, and I waffle all the time between what I know will amuse the audience and make them like me, and my srsbzns historical repertoire that I'm proud of, but which honestly doesn't have broad appeal.  I'd be a lying liar if I said audience response was not important to me.  On the other hand, my passion is elsewhere.

There is nothing wrong, IMO, with wanting a good audience response/broad appeal OR with wanting to follow one's own artistic impulses, audience be darned.  Or with trying to compromise between the two.  I find that acknowledging what it is I'm trying to do helps me make my artistic decisions line up with that goal better (whichever goal it is, today).  Your mileage may vary - and figuring out what your goals really are is not usually a trivial exercise, either.

I don't see why you can't write a fanfic about HP. Just do pre or post-story if you're trying to keep to canon, make it AU, or write about things that Harry either doesn't know about or doesn't see as important enough to add to the books. Like the twins shoving that Slytherin guy into a vanishing cabinet for trying to take points away (what is wrong with them, seriously? Tjey could have killed him!) barely warranted a mention but to him it was probably one of the most traumatic events of his entire life.

I don't know. For me it's not "audience be damned" because I do hope they're enjoying the story, but I'm telling the story that I want to tell, not necessarily the one they want to hear. Nothing major is going to change because the audience wants it to - I could see minor things like Easter eggs being thrown in.

Sure people are going to be sometimes unhappy with the decisions you (or your character) makes, but that's life. They're not writing the story, I am. Now, granted, I'm always hoping I'm not doing something too predictable or overused or cliche, but that's more because I want the story to be original and entertaining to my audience, rather than fearing audience criticism.

I care what people have to say about what I've written, and I'm very happy to get both praise and constructive criticism, but ultimately what they say isn't all that likely to change the actual content of the story. The only thing I can think of that would is "Um, someone already wrote this exact same plot line. You might want to be careful of that."

So, what famous writer do you write like? Find out at: I Write Like

Hopefully, this will help inspire your writing...okay, going back to post more stuff to analyze. :D

Woohoo! I got Jane Austen - no, wait is that a good thing????

I got Jane Austen too and just for laughs the sample I posted was my graphic description of the Dark Ritual....

A con?  Perhaps it just arbitrarily selects a famous author's name from a pre-programmed list....

My problem is also I don't know what people read my stuff for, or why the read it. I used to think I had two very seperate audiences; people reading for the dwarf lore and people reading for the porn/violence, and those in the middle, as well as a few Zevran fans I've picked up on the way.

I am chuffed that people like Missa, and she's well recieved... But I'm worried her slow, slow ironing out of her issues is getting infuriating to people reading it.

Ack, taking a break from work to watch The Piano Teacher. My boss can suckkkk ittttt, and DDW can wait until work is less stressy.

Ugh work has been busy and I am just catching up, again...

I write like Jack London, with one chapter from Soulmates.   I think I can live with that.  He isn't my favorite author, but that had to do with subject matter more than readability.Posted Image

I need to try some other chapters hehe from my other fics.

Well, at least the site got ya thinkin', huh?  :P

I got James Joyce too and I wondered if it thought my writing was too obscure or needed proper punctuation...dang, and I was so hoping for Haruki Murakami (pipe dream there).

It’s a computer program (an alien language to me) so I’m not sure what parts it’s analyzing – though I noticed my more violent scenes generated Chuck Palahniuk and the like...hmmm.<_<

I hope they add more female authors - it sucks that they don't have more female authors in their database.   Okay, back to my obscurity now.

I got Lovecraft for bits that had very long, convoluted, but grammatically accurate sentences. I think that may be a trigger. Or use of certain punctuation marks- colons, semicolons, that sort of thing. They aren't very heavily used these days.

Joyce came up for a section with a lot of italicized text, although I don't know if it's connected since he doesn't use much of that. (I love Joyce)

The bit I had analyzed as Joyce had a lot of italicized text, which I thought they might analyze as thoughts within sentences, which might be considered more stream of consciousness. However, I'm probably giving them more credit than they deserve.
