Oh, don't even kid, Gil.

Online addiction is pretty serious in South Korea - it's like an epidemic there with so many people dying after days marathon of online gaming.  Tisk, tisk...  ;)

Yeah, the media tends to blow things up more it should at times, but I just can't imagine sitting for hours on hours (aside from my day job) in front of the computer...and of course, I say this after being on this forum for about...uhm, what? 4 hours?!  Man...

@Gilgamesh: Yeah, brevity is really an art, isn't it? Hard to do right, but it's beautiful when you do!

Really admire people with a knack for writing short stories.

When my husband told me Jordan had died I thought he was joking. We used to have the same conversation about him dying, Lady D.

Jordan is one of the reasons I ALWAYS have an end in mind when I write a story. I have a feeling he had no idea what was going to happen next. It really annoyed me.

If anyone wants to read a good epic fantasy series - the Katherine Kerr Deverry books are awesome and have recently come to an end. I must admit the first two series were better than the last one, but the best thing about them is that each book has an individual story that is tied into the whole series but can be read on their own.

Yeah, I too have an ending in mind. I just have a long journey getting there. I also keep the important story points or goals that I have as well, to get to my main story plot. I am trying to make it as believable as I can, without that, oh it is mysterious and just happened crap that happens with far too many stories. How did you get from A-D? oh well that isn't important, just keep following along. UGH!  Or worse,*bing* magic did it.:pinched:

I think he had an end in mind.  He always said he knew how it ended.  I think the problem was that he got lost in the getting there.

If you haven't read them, I recommend the Pern series by McCaffery and the Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weiss.  I also have a strange fondness for L.E.Modesitt's Recluce series and Spellsong saga.  Interesting twists on the whole good vs evil thing.

Mmm...speaking of ending, I'm checking out so can work on my ff. Hopefully, you'll have more to add to your reading list, Gil. Night all...but I'm sure I'll see you next time.

I read the first Pern book when I was in high school (many, many, many years ago!) but I wasn't gripped by them then, maybe I'll give them another try.

I actually mostly read kids books these days :) - mainly for work and because I can claim them on tax. There are some absolutely fabulous kids fantasy writers around at the moment. Garth Nix, Eoin Colfer, Anthony Horrowitz are the three that come to mind. Kids books are fun - they're short and sweet and easy to read.

I also love Isobelle Carmody's Darksong series, although she's a really slow writer and I've been waiting something like five years for the next one to come out.

I found Pern more gripping as an adult than as a teenager, but it could just be a matter of what you like.

Tad Williams saga of Memory, Sorrow, & Thorn. Dragon Bone Chair is the first.

And I love Pamela C Dean's take on Childe's poem Tam Lin. And her kids's series The Secret Country, The Hidden Land. The third one, Dragon something is meh. I think she wrote it with a really long time lag between the second one. I hated how it ended. But you can read the first two without the third, even though I have all three.

McCaffery's Pern series was always one of my favorites - "All hail the Masterharper." Katherine Kurtz's Deryni books are great medieval fantasy and Elizabeth Moon handles the evolution of a paladin with rare talent in "The Deed of Packsenarrion". Zelazny is fun for SciFi/fantasy with a twist. I bogged down in Jordan about book 7 and haven't gone back. Brandon Sanderson has some really unique ideas - his "Mistborn" series is awesome.

I also have to admit that I love Terry Pratchett- his Discworld series is hilarious.

Okay, so I devour books and these are only a few of my favorite authors.

I think most of us who write FF are avid consumers of literature (or in desperation writing in any form - I confess to reading cereal boxes too).

LOL, I knew it Tanith! Cereal box reader, and I bet you are a lamppost licker too!

But I agree, I only named a few of my favs. And I don't even want to count the dreck I have read just because I wanted to finish once I started. Or classic literature like The Bronte Sisters, Edgar Allen Poe, Jane Austen, various poets, and novelists. And my all time fav not romance novel smut but with romance and steamy bits Nora Roberts series Dance Upon the Air, Heaven and Earth, Face the Fire (a tale witchcraft that spans into modern time) in Massachusets.

And since I can hope Mr. Gaider doesn't read this particular thread, so I don't die of embarrassment and even though I will sound like an ass kisser, I love his two books based off of this game. Or that this game was based off of. Whichever.

And does anyone else buy two, even three copies of their favorite books? I have one for reading, one for keeping as a back up should the first get so worn out from me re reading, and a third as a back up? Yeah, I am really kooky and totally weird. You can all point and laugh now. Or sidle away slowly. I'll understand.:blink:

Don't worry, I've worn out 3 complete sets of Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings" books, two copies of T.H. White's "The Once and Future King", two copies of McCaffery's first series (Dragonflight, Dragonquest and The White Dragon" and two copies of Zelazny's "Nine Princes in Amber Series", I also need to replace the first book "Deryni Rising" is Katherine Kurtz's first Deryni series.

I buy multiple copies because I wear them out (some of my books have been read 30+ times over the years).

I also admit to enjoying Gaider's books, I hope he writes more.

Oh, and married with children, so um, yeah, lampposts too.

ROFL! Well Tanith you doll. You made me feel better about multiple copies. I also wear them out. Have since I was a kid too. One hundred and One Dalmations I wore out as a child. And don't even bring up all the insipid, awful stupid movies based off of that wonderful childrens book to me. As you can see it is a pet peeve, and I loathe everyone with the hatred of a thousand suns. How they could screw up the book I do not know. I mean They stayed very close to Lord of the Rings, and it was more complex. "ahem." *steps off soap box and backs away slowly*

So the books are worth getting then eh?

Slightly OT: I don't have Awakening since the bug report for the game scares me, but I couldn't bear the thought of not knowing and I checked the wiki for a few spoilers.. the story seems VERY interesting. Is it?

I would buy a second copy of a book I love if it died or got lost, but not have backup copies. o_O I'm one of those people who takes a LOT of care with her books. I get miffed if I lend a tome to someone and it comes back with a creased spine! Good literature is SACRED, people! No folding back the corners of pages either, if you know what's good for you... *glare*

(And all hail Pratchett ;) Also, David Eddings, Lloyd Alexander, Melanie Rawn.)

There are many ethical dilemmas in the game which are things that interest me quite a bit. I have a love/hate relationship with hard choices. :) I want my happy endings, and it always seems like trying to find the choice which isn't so much the best, but isn't the *worst*.

Guilty...guilty...and guilty!  I am not one to carefully place my book on the nightstand.  I constantly fall asleep with them, thinking, "If...I...can...get...just...one...more...page...in...zzzzzzzzz".  Also, I like to dog-ear, and underline various passages and lines of text that I find interesting.  Soooo, guess I'm a goof, too! Oh it is! I recommend getting both books. "The Stolen Throne" gives you insight into Maric, Loghain and their relationship. The depth you can't portray in a game that is already as complex as it is. And "The Calling" is a fantastic book with a young Duncan in it, plus "The Architect." So yeah, I recommend them. I need to get my back up copies to keep on reserve. Thanks for reminding me!

Well, I should have known I was in great company! Shadow totally like that if I loan a book. I don't object to weyr doing it to his books, that is cool. But I had a friend who would drop food on my books. Pages stained, or stuck together. They were banned from ever borrowing from me again!:pinched:

Oh *bows to Prachett* Prachett is a god.  David Eddings, sodding fantastic.

Did I tell you all how much I love you? I feel so geeky and that feels so normal here. *gets everyone in a group hug*<3

I love Eddings - I always wanted to keep Zith (my last GM though a snake was silly so I ended up with a blood wolf instead (Rolemaster campaign).

I confess I am a little hard on books - I don't dog ear pages or spill food on them but bent spines, falling asleep on them, dragging them around in my truck so I can get a page or two in while waiting at the drive through - guilty as charged.

I don't know if this has been addressed, but has anyone read the Abhorsen Trilogy by Gath Nix? They are freaking FANTASTIC! The first of the books is Sabriel, and your mind will be reeling to grasp the "time" and "place" of it all for the first 10-15 pages, but then you will NOT be able to put them down. They have such an interesting take on magic and necromancy.

I love the Abhorsen books. One of the best realised worlds in fantasy in my opinion. Nix is awesome. All his worlds are really different.
